While taking the picture of the Bess Bug (posted in close up) a neighbor came up and said "What's that?". Being a science teacher I explained about bessbugs. He the said "No, what that in you hands?" I then realized that with the flash covered with a plastic chip can tube, a ring light on the front a flip bracket with wires for the flash and wires and battery pack for the ring light, he couldn't see the camera. My ex used to say "Accessories make the outfit". I did not know what she meant until now

A photo of all that would be great, please.

Great pics. Initially, I thought you were talking about some of our Politicians.

If you've never heard the song of the hermit thrush, use and share my joy.

Nice shots and crisp sharp may I ask what gear you used ?

I used my trusty Canon 60D with the good ole Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM on a tripod.

Here it is, almost May, and I'm finally seeing birds that I normally see much, much earlier. Forgive my excitement, but this is one of my favorites. It always amazes me, how a bird can know where a well concealed bit of food is.

Beautiful birds and wonderful photos , we have them show up here in Arkansas sometimes very hard to get good photos of.
Drawback to them is they sure can kill a tree quickly .

Woodpeckers do not kill trees! They feed in insects that are already infesting a tree. The insects are the ones that do the damage. Pileated holes are made in a portion of the tree that is ALREADY compromised.

They are daily visitors to my clearing in the woods. Here are the male and female. Note the differences. She definitely has a more stylish "do".

Yes, winter will not release its grip up here in the north woods of Wisconsin. This white tail was not happy about me photographing its foraging under my bird feeders yesterday!

I would also suggest going to YouTube and watching some of Bryan's videos, or google "Bryan Peterson" and find other references to his resources. He's an entertaining guy and makes learning fun.

Would you mind sharing the shutter speed? I love to shoot birds as well, but am inexperienced and still trying to figure out the right adjustments to get these kinds of shots.

I was shooting manual at 1/2656 sec, f5.0, ISO 320, 170mm w/ a Canon 60D and a Canon 100-400 lens,

   I agree. It works quite well. Good capture. Do you have any other pics of this sequence? (I recently posted some pics about the advantage of Continuous Shooting http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-107545-1.html) Thanks for showing yours.

I'm almost always shooting in that mode 'cause I'm almost always shooting birds!! It lets you catch the little things that are so delightful to observe. Like this nuthatch hopping to a more preferred perch, for instance.

Maybe there's better seed in this hole....
