When he played for the Colts, he worked with my father selling cars during the off season..I was born in 43' so was too young to remember him, but I remember my dad talking about him, and how far he could throw a football.

Last month, I was up in Ottawa for a competition and I left my camera bag (sans camera) in my crossover every day. In the bag there were a few lenses and my SB-700 Speedlight. The temperature was never very hot outside, but the sun was shining and it got pretty hot in the car.

At the end of the second week, it was time for the awards and I pulled out my SB-700 for indoor shots. Lo and behold, I discovered the batteries had leaked. Four AAs, Energizer brand. The batteries were a few months old or less and the expiration date was 2024 or some such. I pulled out the batteries and put away the Speedlight. So, no decent flash for the awards and it shows on the pictures.

When I got back home, I cleaned out the battery housing using a stainless steel brushes and some CLR and now the Speedlight works fine.

I have never experienced a battery leakage with modern batteries and certainly not one in such a short time. I used the flash a few months ago at another event and it worked fine and like I said the batteries were just a few months old.

Has anyone else encountered such a problem with batteries and heat? And before someone asks, the Speedlight unit was turned off completely, not in standby mode.

Same thing happened to my SB700. I tried to clean it up but it still would not work. Nikon wanted $150 to fix it......NOT
What is CLR?

I would like to combine several images of the eclipse into a single photograph showing the sequence of partial through to total and then through to final partial. I'll probably have 4 to 6 partial shots on each side of the total. Does anyone know of a software program that can do this? I know it must be out there because I've seen the results, just not how if was achieved. I've downloaded 2 different software programs but they seem to be suitable only for overlapping images like three or four shots taken across a landscape or a sequence of images of a drawing or painting. The images I want to sequence are obviously similar but don't need to be tied together, just sequenced across the frame.

My brother-in-law called a plumber to fix a toilet in one of his rental houses. The plumber removed the toilet then left to get a part. When he returned, someone had crapped in the toilet. How do you flush that???

I bought a sheet of solar eclipse filter material from Amazon. I own the Tamron 150-600mm lens also. I cut a circle of the filter to fit a 95-105mm step up ring, which I also bought from Amazon, and glued it to the ring. I practiced with this set up taking photos of the sun. Settled on ISO 400 f8 1/250 with a 2 sec delay on the mirror. I bracketed 9 exposures at first. It is recommended that bracketing also be done during the eclipse. I have a D7200 which does not have a tilting back, so I attached a right angle viewfinder to the eyepiece. This allows me to sit on a stool while shooting with my tripod and saves my neck and back. That time of day the sun is at a high angle. I wish I had another camera so I could shoot a series on one frame.

If you want to you can add canvas to the left and fill it with Content aware.
An easy way is to select the Crop tool, pull the left edge to the left as far as you would like, make sure content aware is checked, and click
the check mark at the top right of the page.

My last step in post processing is sharpening. If the photo has been resized to 1000 pixels on the long side, I use Photoshop Smart Sharpen, Amount about 90 and Radius about .9.
I am pleased with the way the sharpening looks on screen.
The problem comes when I want to submit the photo to a stock company for sale. My Full size is 6000 pixels on the long side. If I try sharpening at lets say Amount 200 and a Radius of 2, at 100% the photo looks terrible, the noise is exaggerated, and at the normal viewing size on screen it doesn't look sharp like the 1000 pixel size. What am I doing wrong, I just started submitting for stock sales?

Dynamic focus might be a better choice as it gives priority to the center spot. With group it is more likely to get a wing tip instead of the birds eye in focus. With the shallow depth of field of longer lenses, this can make a noticeable difference.

While this has been acknowledged in many publications (and I learned the hard way) I think Steve Perry's video on Nikon Focusing makes it pretty clear. 12 minutes well spent.

For birds in flight I strongly recommend setting the camera to GROUP AUTO FOCUS (Gr P) in the top screen. Then pick the center focusing spot (this should be a default setting on your Nikon) and Nikon will automatically put four spots around that one for a total of 5. As long as, when you track the bird, one of the five spots is on the bird the bird will be in focus. Use center weighted metering, continuous auto focus, shoot in Aperture priority and at least two stops down from wide open and shoot at least 1/1600 second or higher. Good luck.

You're trying to be a photographer without knowing what to do. Where is the tripod? Take a camera that you are familiar with and not something you have never used before. When you learn that the camera does not take the picture, the photographer does. You should have purchased a 50mm prime lens and learned the basics of photography.

What kind of BS is this? I rented the D500 to have a second camera with me. I've been using Nikon cameras for for 35 years. I have all the accessories needed including two tripods and a mono pod. Apparently you did not comprehend my post. What a nasty and rude reply you wrote. The conclusions you drew from a simple request for tips shows you have your head up your a$$.

Thanks to all the other responders for the help you offered.

I have a D500 rental arriving tomorrow. Never used one before. I own a D7200. My Tamron 150-600mm will be attached to the D500 and my 16-80mm will be on my D7200. I'm taking a trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone next week.
I would appreciate any tips you D500 owners can give me regarding camera settings for birds and other wildlife.
Thanks
