In Colorado Springs the Air Force Academy is a good place to go for photographs. You can get to the Academy from I-25. If you do not have a military ID, you can still get on the premises by showing your drivers license. There are some hiking trails and camping areas. One of my favorite places to go near my home is Palmer Park. Palmer Park is located on Academy and Maizeland. (3650 Maizeland Rd) Drive up the road that curves around and you will find some picnic tables tucked in among the rocks and trees, with a view of Pikes Peak. If you follow the road up to the very top you will have an unobstructed view of Pikes Peak. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. My son will be meeting us there and he has been there a couple times & is a bit familiar with the area but your specifics will really help us. We're both coming from different locations on the east side of the US.

And make sure you let me know when the Lighthouse tour starts!

Great shots DugE. LH's are my favorite.
Saw these lighthouses 4 years ago on a cruise in that area.
Went back last year and while taking a photo of the Portland Headlight, tripped and broke my wrist. Saved the camera.
Headed back there someday. If I'm not mistaken, the first LH is called "Bug Light" but has been humorously renamed "Bud Light". Not sure if that was tour guide humor.

[quote=Virgil]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: The Wall (Vietnam)!!!!

For most Americans who read this they will only see the numbers that the Vietnam War created. To those of us who survived the war, and to the families of those who did not, we see the faces, we feel the pain that these numbers created. We are, until we too pass away, haunted with these numbers, because they were our friends, fathers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters. There are no noble wars, just noble warriors.

Thanks Virgil for this post. You're right about looking at the wall and experiencing the "feelings". I've been at the wall several times. One time I took a photo of one of the panels listing a name of an individual in my unit that did not make it back. When I transferred the picture to my computer, I realized my image was reflected in it as well. Took my breath away.
There's also a great Memorial in New Jersey. It has the names of those from NJ that did not make it back. It's impressive and next to the memorial is a Vietnam Memorial history museum (I believe that it's the only one of its kind in the US). Spent a good deal of time visiting this site. Very worthwhile seeing it. http://www.njvvmf.org

Have a Garbage-free day!

OK - Now we all know what to do when a gruff, outspoken person spouts off on UHH in the future.....Right ??

Reminds me of the saying that goes something like this:
Some days you're the statue, some days you're the pigeon.

Thanks. Enjoyed this video. Kept humming the Kodachrome song by Paul Simon throughout the video.

Just out and about today. Had a great breakfest at the hotel kitchen and sat outside with the door person (young man) chatting and watching the world go by.

Here are a few shots from walking around the blocks near my hotel.

Nice shots Sarge. So far does any of the city you've seen, resemble the city of 40 years ago? When is your trek into the country? Have fun.

Took advantage of the rare wet snow storm this weekend... Love the trees after these storms.

Nice winter scene photos. Mother Nature really provided us with some great photo opportunities. Snow consistency made for unique images. Careful how you label "storms" in WNY. You know, some people think it's like this all year round. I really thought the winter weather last week was just a little more than a dusting. Down to the pavement for driving the next day. Glad we didn't get hit with the STORM that hit NE. Feel sorry for them.

Traffic is, as I said 'Horrendous' and I would not in two lifetimes if allowed, rent a honda for transportation. I'd be a casualty in a minute at the best. Horns are constantly blowing, not in anger, but just to let you know they are in back or either side of you. Signal lights on large buses or trucks have a warning buzzer attached so you get 'Buzzzz Buzzz Buzzzz' in back of you and it's some large vehicle with a signal light on.

Sarge - Does the traffic have like 10,000+ scooters all over the place? And is there an "exhaust cloud" hanging over the city? Also, I now remember dropping a couple hundred dong in front of the hotel as I was running to get some transportation. If you see the $, could you retrieve for me? Thanks.
Have fun. Stay safe.

Thanks for your outstanding project. Etched in my mind is that unmistakable sound of a huey approaching knowing it meant help was at my location (Vietnam 1969-1970).
Good luck with your trip.

Thank You Macv Dave. The sound of the Huey is very distinct. They were "the sound of hope" to many. Where are you located? Anywhere close to Indiana?

I live near Niagara Falls (& the Niagara Falls Air Base) so we're a little way from Indiana. In the early 90's we used to make the trek to South Bend where my son went to school & my also BIL was stationed/lived in Fishers. Had various "experiences" in hueys, some good some not good and actually got to take some photos and videos from the air a couple times. A retirement project I still have to get to is transferring the slides to digital. Got a unique (to me) Super 8 clip while hanging out the door and being shot at. Footage has the ground, the sky, the inside of the chopper and some other stuff. The camera was then turned off as I sat back a took a bunch of breaths. We got out of the situation safely that time.
Keep up the great work.

Sarge hope you have a great trip. Wish I were going too.
Listen, last time I was in Can Tho I dropped about a 100 dong in front of the "hotel" there. Could you take a minute and see if it's still there & retrieve it for me? I'd appreciate it.
Any chance of getting closer to "beautiful" Bac Lieu (by the sea)? Take care. Stay safe. I'll be anxious to see the "slide show".

We were in Fairbanks in the summer of 2011.
Adding a photo from "downtown" Fairbanks here to give you some distance perspective. We ate at a restaurant (sorry can't remember the name of it) where the owner's father was the governor of Alaska when it became a state. The owner actually was in front of his establishment welcoming people into the place. Then he gave a lunchtime speeh with some history. (Oh I heard he too was a former politician).
We had a great time there, then on to Denali. Have fun!
Dave
