I once ruined a few dozen shots accidentally switching the mode dial from M to A. It was a frustrating, difficult lesson to learn: check and then re-check settings, and then check again, often!

This is probably the most important lesson I've learned since I went DSLR in '08.. Always check settings before leaving house.. I still screw this up sometimes.. ed

I was stocking the shelves of the store I run when I noticed that my little 'house guest' was very quiet. I had her closed off in the office area sleeping. Unfortunately I had left my manual on the desk. By the time I saw it, it was shredded. I know that I can download one and print it, but who has the ink for that many pages!! If anyone has an extra to sell, I will gladly buy it. Just PM me.

Well she's a good looking girl and she looks completely innocent too.

Sorry I can't help as I haven't even purchased my 7D yet..

Shooting Nikon D7000 w/ 700-200 2.8 hand held at the margins with post and some cropping done in LR4.

I was in a boat less than a mile off shore on a whim to see if any whales were about. The humpback jumped twice about 20 minutes apart and only caught the splash the first time but once we knew he was about I tried to be ready for the second occurence. Just got lucky. Was a great day between the Humpys and the Blue whales we also saw all the regulars. Sea Otters, sea lions, Harbor seals, and several types of jelly fish.

Oh just so yu know....whales have fish breath....needs oceans of mouthwash!

Well that's not all luck because you knew to be ready just in case, and obviously it worked.. Nice work.. Thanks for the details.. What an awesome day you had..

OK Capt, can I ask what you were shooting and where exactly you were in relation to these beauties? Envious.. We actually had Orca sightings in both Tillamook and Nehalem bays a few weeks ago. Not by me unfortunately..

What makes this whole thing a very poor attempt at humor for me is that we are supposed to believe that Muslim countries are the largest market for a book entitled "America".. I'm thinking NOT..

I am just glad that I submit a monthly copyright registration of my photos, its easy and pretty cheap to do. Almost nothing of any consequence that I have posted on here has not been copyrighted so I am not worried. Having that copyright gives me the right to pursue actual damages, and if I see my work in print without my permission granted, I will do so. Lets just hope this is another moron trying to stir up trouble in a failed attempt to bolster his penile shortcomings, I am pretty sure it is! Who else would be stupid enough to declare his idiocy outright in such a blatant manner? My thought is its just another internet troll living in his mothers basement and popping his zits on the wall.

The beach in the summer on the west coast often leaves something to be desired. In the words of Mark Twain " The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. These were shot yesterday off Santa Cruz. Hope you enjoy as I rarely see offshore pictures on UHH

Wow awesome shots.. Oh and I can confirm the weather report.. It is often the same for the North Oregon coast.. The hotter it is inland, the more likely it will be 60 degrees and foggy on the beach..

hey jerry...send me 35 of those bills so i can buy a new camera body.

Even better, just print if off the screen - as many copies as you want.

May I have some too? Please?

Naw, just want to tell you my "story" about paper money, Canadian in this case. Our grandson, then six years old, had been given some money to put into his newly opened bank account. I captured the look on his face when he opened the envelope, but not the money itself, so when it came to scrapbooking time, I put a 5- and a 10-dollar bill on the scanner, hit the "scan" button.... and got an error message! There is a security feature built into Canadian paper money that makes it impossible to scan it. My "workaround" was to take pictures with my camera, and they opened just fine in PSE to be used for scrapbooking. This security feature is also built into the new plastic bank notes.....

Very interesting. I'm surprised the U. S. hasn't done that.

It's not so much the scanner, but the printer. When image quality in printers reached a certain point that's where all the security was invested. We used to get visits from the local office of the FBI whenever a returned printer showed evidence that currency had been printed. It didn't take long before all high end printers had currency identification S/W. I am sure that became a requirement.

Great shots! I also applaud the fact that you are an auto setting shooter. Thank you for those of us who do prefer it.

There are times when the situation may exceed the camera`s auto capability but they are very rare.An experienced photographer can make auto "P,AV and TV" handle just about any situation but the extremes.I prefer to concentrate on the subject and to let the camera do the computing. Most of the time the camera can do it better and much faster than any operator.I do not subscribe to myths.Thanks,Ivan.

Hi Norman,

This will be a nice test for me.. My thinking is that with no post processing the only difference between the two pictures is that one was converted to .jpg by your camera, and the other by whatever s/w you use to convert RAW to .jpg.. Given that I'm not sure of the purpose, but I like #2 better..
