I am ok with airlines stopping selling me airline tickets with cargo flights. I have never understood why people bring tons of stuff with them on travel. When I am travelling with my wife on longer trips we usually bring one small suitcase of clothes and such things with us, she has her handbag and I have my rather small camerabag on the shoulder with 2 bodies and 3-4 lenses and some smaller things. And for shorter trips we do not bother to bring anything but hand luggage.

Different strokes for different folks? They like to change their underwear daily?

What's terrible is buying a new hard case recently that is FAA approved for carry on and the new "International" proposals that would relegate it to check in due to an inch or two. I'm glad that the American airlines rejected that proposal.

I had no problem with China Air and KLM on our recent trip to Thailand (June) for carry on. Does the IATA propose all airlines change their overhead bin size. Are they in cahoots with luggage manufacturers.

I read that the US airlines are not going along with those proposals and therefore more than likely the rest of the carriers won't follow through with these new proposals.

Welcome to UHH.
I was an AO aboard USS Forrestal 1967-1969.

My dad was on the Forrestal too when it caught on fire in the Gulf of Tonkin July, 1967. He retired in December the same year after 20 years in the Navy. I was on the same ship for five days in 1973 when it was in the Mediterranean waiting for my ship (Josephus Daniels) to be in the area to transfer to it. Big difference between a carrier and a destroyer. Good times looking back on it now.

Maybe a Cam Ranger or something similar would come in handy in these situations.

I have a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS and I want to get a flash that will work properly on it. I don't have the money to invest ina a Canon flash so I am looking for an off brand that will work on the SX50 and be able to use the ETTL functions. Does anyone know of some suggestions that will definitely work on it? Is the SX50 flash shoe a standard Canon hot shoe or is it special?

I don't have the SX50 but do have the SX60 and have used a Yongnuo (565 or 568) in the hot shoe - worked fine but I would rather use the remote trigger (YN 622C) instead. With the remote triggering I had to go to manual mode because TTL did not work (but it does on my 7D so don't know if it is a Canon or a Yongnuo issue).

I found the Canon SX60 with 65 x zoom to be pretty good. Here is a shot of a tree on our neighbor's side at the widest angle (early morning sun). There is a woodpecker on the top of this dead tree. I won't show the shot of the woodpecker at this time - pretty bad with the light on the side and behind. Here is a shot of the woodpecker later that day with the afternoon sun on it. The shot was handheld (amazing how it came out at all) this time as I was shooting around the back yard.

Third photo is a crop from the first photo showing the dead tree and I added a red marker to emphasize where it is.

The fourth photo must be way overexposed. The values for the first photo is ISO 200, 1/500 sec, f/8; the third photo is ISO 400, 1/500 sec, f/8 while the last (blank) one is ISO 3200, 21 seconds, f/11.

I would start with the values the camera gives you to begin with and then if you need bulb start doubling/halving the shutter only. Lock down ISO and aperture first so that only the shutter time varies in other words.

Sandia Peak (take the tram and hike the ridge) and the Botanical Garden & Aquarium were nice when we visited such a long time ago. The Indian Cultural Center may be worth a visit if you have time but skip it if you don't. We stayed in Santa Fe but flew into and out of Albuquerque so visited the places above the first day and the few hours before flying out. Visited Chama (cool small town with small gauge railroad), Bandelier NM, and drove up to Colorado to see Mesa Verde and Durango when we visited. Santa Fe is okay but quite small.

It may hold that weight but I don't know about the stability - probably very shaky. I got one for a trip to Thailand last month just to hold my little Canon SX60 which was very adequate. It will hold my 7d with battery grip and a 17-55 too but I wouldn't trust it for very long.

I noticed the other night while sighting in the moon with the SX60 that it did shake a bit as I zoomed in and tried to make small adjustments. I doubt it would work for a 6D and a big lens at a 45 degree angle. I have a Gitzo and RRS ball head but it is too heavy and bulky for travel (at least for me).

Donate them to charities if they will take them? I gave my old 64 MB card to my wife to back up her Quicken files but that was eons ago.

Amazing how prices have fallen and size and performance has increased over the years. A Lexar 256 MB CF card in 2002 cost me $100 and I thought that was a great price, now a Lexar 16 GB (300X) SD card was $13 last week at Walmart. That is 64 times more memory for almost 1/8 the price!
