That is a yes (setting the AF to 6.5), unless you have the stabilizer mode 3 (like in the new version), I would turn the stabilizer off altogether. I always turn mine to >Off<, if I shoot any action handheld, to avoid blurred shots!
One other option? Center point selection on the AF selection? I tried the spread on the 6d, 11 points, but it seemed the focus got "confused". Center point seemed to get better results.

Really! Ok, I will try that. Thx for the suggestion.
I am not a big fan of coots. I live on a golf coarse and they can do quite a bit of damage. However they are fun to try to catch chasing each other, I assume the males establishing territory. Here are some of my first tries. Fast enough shutter speed, in that the water is frozen, but not quite in focus. Canon 100-400 ISL @400, Canon 6D, ISO 1000, f/10@1/2000. This is the older version f this lens. Hand held. I'm practicing with the lens and a couple of thoughts occurred to me. The AF was set at 1.8M-infinity. If I set the af to 6.5 might it focus faster? Also the stabilizer mode was set to 1, and I think 2 is for panning. I'm going to tray those options. The house finch is nice and sharp, hand held. F/8 @ 1/800, Iso 1000, 6D. F/8 is the sweet spot on this lens. Comments are always appreciated. I love the feet on these coots.

Availability of the new lens was to be late November, early December 2014. B&H and Amazon each have two buyer reviews of the 400 DO II, earliest dating to late December and newest as of Feb. 1. So at least some of the lenses appear to have been released. But neither B&H, Amazon nor Adorama have it in stock. B&H and Adorama don't even hint at an availability date, Amazon says it will ship in 2 to 4 weeks, whatever that means.
A difference I see in the feedback and info about the Mark II version is that at least one of the reviewers is using it a lot with a 1.4X and happy with the results. I seem to recall a lot of folks felt the first version wasn't all that great with teleconverters. The Canon-provided MTF charts at The Digital Image website seem to support this and that the new lens has various overall image quality improvements, as well as latest-generation IS.
The new lens is about 150 grams heavier, exact same diameter and 1/10 of an inch longer than the original version. So, yes, it appears the "Mark I" could be used to get a "feel" for the lens. If build quality is a concern, it's basically an L-series super tele with a green stripe instead of a red one.

I bit the bullet yesterday and ordered this lens from b&h yesterday. The lenses are coming in with probably a two week lead time. Excited, yes!
This can be an amazing site when the hormones are running high!

November of 2014 is the latest guesstimate. As incredible as the lens sounds you will still have to wait. Maybe it will be the "kit" lens for the new 5D MkIV, which is coming any minute. What a combination that will be, a dumbed-down MkIII and a supertelie! There is some problem with the 400 DO II and Canon is not talking about it. It won't sit on the shelves very long when it is finally released. 4 1/2 lbs. for a 400mm?? All at f/4.0. The price is somewhat ouchy, but everybody's got a flaw!

UPP, wrong address. "Problem"?
We were down in that area last fall but did not get down into the Vermillion Cliffs area. I am aware that the BLM has restricted access to some of the areas, like "The Wave". Is South Coyote Buttes one of the areas that does not have such restrictions. Can you recommend others in the Vermillion Cliffs area that do not have such BLM restrictions. I'm planning on another trip to this area in the near future and really want to spend some time here as well as the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Not as many tourests.
Thanks

Unfortunately, all that seems to be known right now is, it's been announced and available for preorder with no defined shipping date.
Thanks. I would love to be able to "feel" this lens before dropping the bucks.
Has anyone heard when this lens is going to be available? Just curious.

I use a Canon 7D at the moment but would like to take more landscapes and low light shots (indoor and out). Lenses I have are 50mm 1.4 , 100mm2.8 , 16-35mmF4L , 24-105L , 70-200MMF2.8 L and 400mmF5.6L. Would like to upgrade to full frame , which would you choose 5D3 or 6D.
If your intent is landscapes or other slow moving scenes, most likely you won't need the features of the 5D. Considering the sensors in these two cameras, image quality should be the same. I don't think you need to spend the extra money assuming your stated subject matter. Love my 6D and actually its doing a great job at capturing birds as well. Good luck.

I had the Canon first ($100 lens, can't beat that). The sigma is sharper, however you could only tell if you're a pixel peeper like me ;) I do prefer the Sigma, but I could have just a well saved some dough and been happy with the Canon.
I'm a pixel peeper as well and as such went for the Sigma DG. Also was sold by the sales man that the signa demonstrated a tonality closer to film. I like mine a bunch. I've found the best resolution to be around f/9.0
Love those full frame sensors. Notice you are carrying a canon 50 mm as well as the sigma. Do you have a preference?

Great shot all the pieces were in place- sky ,draw bridge etc. this was shot in with one pic???? Rich
The title includes the word "composite". I assume this was generated with multiple exposures most likely from different locations in that I don't think you could get the Milky Way in downtown London due to the light contamination. Nice composition and I can understand why it sold!
