when I get an attack of GAS (gear acquirement syndrome) I use my google search to see what gear is vs. similar gear. It is so simple I put in the google search bar (for example) nikon d850 vs nikon df. There usually pops up first a very basic graph, but 90% of the time the next one or two search results will be from a site called camera decision. Here is a link to cut and paste for that specific result.

http://cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D850-vs-Nikon-Df

I like the comprehensive feature v feature comparison. AND it uses photographer "style and desire" points to set camera features against one another.

As for you ISO film vs. digital: Yes it is true that generally speaking the lower the ISO the better the sharpness of your image. HOWEVER, don't let the numbers of film confuse you. I have seen some spectacular images shot at much higher ISO that was NEVER available in film. I have just a simple intro d3400 and I am getting fantastic lower light images on a kit lens in the 3200 to 6400 ISO range. Hope this helps

The obvious..... yes Nikon, but also removing the battery completely, check the contacts and charge the battery??? Going to the menu under set up and using the "restore factory settings" selection? I know as a newbie who has begun playing with all of those menu functions, sometimes I set myself up for a consequence I don't know. I'd try that and then call Nikon. Unless you want to significantly upgrade your gear (GAS) and get to the d7000 series of the dream crop sensor d500. I would think it would be worth investigating repair. Best of luck. Let me/us know how it turns out....

The morning was clear and the snow mostly undisturbed. Just had to go out this morning and see what I could find around town. The old railway bridge-tressel has been a favorite and took many high school seniors portraits down by the tracks. The church is by a famous architect and has been photographed from all angles and seasons over the years. Oh! the lens flare was intentional.

I'm in Southern Indiana too!! First pic I was playing with the snow in the pine needles vs. the sun in the bright blue sky. The second was taken during the snow yesterday. Just fun stuff!! Very unusual for us to have this much snow to play in and/or photo

What church/where is it?

Great pics on the fly.... I think wood storks are so photogenic. This is a photo taken Dec 28th in Deerfield Beach. d3400 with kit lense 70-300 in A (aperture) mode. This is just cropped, but otherwise this one is right off the memory card. Keep shooting!!!

Welcome!!! Great photo, I really like not only the composition, but also the vibrant and sharp details!!! I too am new and enter with the "entry level" d3400. I am having a ball with it, and am really trying as much as I can in trying to stay OFF of the auto mode and using either aperture or shutter program to help me develop my skills a bit. I am already seeing a bit of a gear elite trend on these boards, but I am just drinking it in and figure that IF my skills outgrow the entry level, then I will be knowledgeable in my next purchase. Hope your experience here is positive. I look forward to seeing your posts and hopefully we grow in this with each other....

If that is all it was, then I would get it.... Photo snobs, and Gear/gadget elitists are what they are are ... But a homophobic slur from nowhere should be addressed. Just my $0.02 worth.

Less than a week in....

So in my initial post, I was gently warned that there might be some "gruff" comments from some who are tired of what they believed to be questions that have been repeatedly asked. I get it and was expecting it. But I then create a post with a question regarding a photo and I get a vile response that was out of line and a personal attack out of nowhere. I have tried to complain to admin via PM here and on the tab at the comments section and no response.

I am not comfortable with the possibility of similar responses/slurs/attacks. How does this person get to act like this? Not sure I will be as active as I had planned to be.

Those two are some of the best examples I have seen. The Bokeh.... it in no way looks like photog error, but rather really enhances the image. I think that the example I posted relative to these two just looks like a poorly focus or framed image. Thank you for sharing those two images

That is s gorgeous photo. But I just see a really deep depth of field. Looks like a smaller f stop one a bit longer shutter?

Thanks lamiaceae, There is no way to crop the grass out of this shot, but when I framed the next shot I did not include the grass. When I was playing with the photo, the whole bokeh thing was on my mind so I thought I'd get some input. My goal for the day was to play with the flat light, but I'm not sure what exactly I can or could do about it. Is there a white balance solution? I am putting white balance on my "to learn list" today....

Well I am so new back in the game that I still don't even know what information is "useless". So if I understand this correctly, if you have large DOF, then you don't have Bokeh? Are they mutually exclusive?

So initial post on this section of UHH....

As Kid Rock would say, "I haven't seen the sun in three damned days...."

But I wanted to get out and play with white balance a bit.

This was shot at about 80 yards on my new d3400 with kit lens
iso 400
300 mm
1/500
6.3

I do not have a big PP set up, so I just used a bit of play on my old windows 7 gallery edit program. All I did was crop and clean up some debris on the ice behind the subject.

My question is: Is the blurred grass in the forefront considered bukeh, or is it just a distraction that I should have cropped out?
