I think Gene51 took some time off last year and then posted again in Dec. But nothing since then. I miss him.

I was going to submit this name too. I believe he is the gentleman I met with in Littleton several years ago. He helped me with my Sony a6000. I utried to contact him a year ago, feared he had passed. Got no response.

This section is for posting pictures you took. If you want to ask others to comment on your choice of subjects, composition, settings, show off your pictures to others, or ask for general critique, then please do so in the Photo Gallery section.

But if you need help with a specific issue, then please post in the Photo Analysis section.

Maybe there is a difference between pictures and photos

A current example of the all-too-common misuse of UHH sections.

Admin will probably move the photos to Gallery where they belong.

I’ve read through Rick’s original post and several pages on this feed that followed. They’ve made me think about which of my photos please me and the reasons why. I rarely post unless I think I have something worth looking at.

My first question (to myself) is “What makes a good photograph”? To me, it is rarely a photo that is technically brilliant. It’s because a photo says something about the subject. In my case the subject is usually human.

The handful of my people photos that stand out over the years are great because they reflect the personality of a person or reflect something that was happening when it was shot. I know they are good because of the responses I get from those who know the subjects. Those photos are way more meaningful than a so-called professional shot taken in a studio and sold for large sums of money.

Here’s an idea for you all. When you want to post a photo to UHH, in the Gallery or somewhere else, how about explaining why you like it and why you think it’s worth showing. If we all understood that, we would probably view your photos in a different light.

Here is something that no one has brought up. Has anyone else noticed that the people who are posting their snapshots and the people replying with praise are the same people over and over? They all address each other by their first names. What we have here is a social group. They don't want criticism. They want to be friends. If you don't want to "put up with" this, then move on. There is nothing in the rules against this. Different strokes for different folks. I would suggest leaving them alone. Maybe it adds meaning to their lives in their old age.

You can probably say the same thing about other Sections such as "For Your Consideration" or "Digital Artistry".

Although I understand what you are saying here, there is still no point in offering gushing praise on a set of images that are, well, not good photos, in a number of ways. Whether the poster is asking for comments or not.

Now this also may be, because those posting such praise, themselves have no clue as to what makes a good photograph and what does not. Therefore, we effectively have the blind leading the blind and there is no fixing that.

Well, what DOES make a good photograph?

UHH member "User ID" seems to be a professional with more photography knowledge than almost anyonr around here. Are his photographs "good"?

I think some of you are over-kneading this dough. This idea that the Gallery posters have no interest in improving their game just seems silly to me.

Please look at my Gallery post at

It's not a great shot - through a dirty window with a lowly lens set at max zoom (300mm) held by old shaky hands. But I thought the subject and resulting photo interesting enough to post. No big deal, no expectations of attaboys, just hoping for a little conversation and some fun. The positive reactions were nice but the most appreciated were comments regarding fox behavior.

So it isn't all about posting photos and seeking advice for improvement!

Fantastic work. Sharp, well focused and I personally love it, even if you don't really care what others think. Acoarst, some improvement could be made if your removed the white fringe from around the fence.

But that's just my unsolicited opinion, which I think I'm allowed to give since we're not in the precious gallery, where people that take pictures for themselves only, could care less what others think, and have no interest in improving either because they're old, or already know everything. (Not too sure why people would bother posting their photo's on a public forum if they're not interested in others opinions?)

I'd like to blow a special raspberry to all those that don't wish to improve, regardless of endeavor.

BTW, you posted your phone pic in the wrong space, there is a forum specifically for phone pics...

Are you possibly confusing those of us who are NOT in the business of photography with those who are? I submit my photos because this is a photography forum where we enjoy looking at each other's photographs, discussing those photographs and possibly discussions of what equipment was used, how to achieve a similar photo and so on. We offer praise for those people who have submitted their best work while we realize your best work may easily surpass the quality of my best work. Yet we are each proud of our submissions.

When I submit my photos I do want to hear positives but I am acceptable of someone offering a well meant suggestion on how to better my photo next time. I may not agree with something such as composition but will accept the comment from someone who would have composed my photo differently.

No, I'm not confusing pros and hobbyists. I just don't believe folks who claim they don't care what other people think of their creative output.

It's called self confidence.

Nope, I don't.
If they like them, that's great, if they don't that's fine also.
I'm not in the business to sell photographs.
Not everyone's taste matches mine. I'm not shooting for their taste.
And since I shoot for me, well, that's what they get to see.
I simply provide the option.

I guess I understand, sort of.....

But I don't believe for a minute that self confidence in what you like and "the hell with the rest of the world" is enough for a creative person.

Do you really think a writer can happily write books that nobody reads? Or that composers can happily write music that nobody wants to listen to? I don't think so. But I'm going too far off topic...

Well, I'm over 70 and not obsessed with improving my photography (for over 50 years), I'm quite satisfied with it.
And if something doesn't work out the way I anticipated it to, oh well.
I shoot for me, not to be "perfect", but to enjoy what I do. It works.
I enjoy photography so much more not worrying about always making things "better".

Yes, my prerogative.

You (and quite a few others) emphasize that you are the only one who needs to like your work, that opinions of others are unimportant. It's almost a badge of honor to not care what other people think.

Yet you sell your photos. Don't you care what your customers like and don't like?
