Well I took the plunge and just ordered one of Peak Designs aluminum travel tripods. Hoping that I don't end up regretting the purchase since I went with the aluminum over the carbon fiber. I've had a Vanguard tripod for years that I absolutely love, mainly the pan-tilt head on it, but don't carry around much anymore simply because of it's size and weight.

I did a search and haven't seen any new posts about their travel tripods on here lately. So, any new feedback anyone wants to share while I wait for mine?

Oh, and if you didn't know, they have a Black Friday sale going on through mid week next week if there's anything of theirs you might want to pick up.

I took advantage of the PD sale and bought the Carbon Fiber tripod. One problem wit the ball head is that you can't pan with it. I solved that problem by getting a Sunway DDH-07 Panoramic Panning Clamp. It has an AcaSwiss plate and will clamp onto the PD ball head. Only the two screws on the ball head plate have to be removed. I thought this a better solution than having to remove the PD ball head and replace it with one of my panning heads.

I have the SW270c and really like it. I also bought the X-Rite i1 Display Pro to calibrate the monitor.

I have read some of the post about the "photo shop sky replacement" and it seems that a lot of the posters were not really for it.....personally I think it's neat!I do have a question for those who use it........

I have attempted to bring in my own sky's but I haven't been able to. When I click on "import skies" and go to my folders with my sky files it shows that my folders are "empty"........do the sky photos that I want to import have to be in a certain format? Mine have all be edited in ACDee and are JPEG's.

I have RAW files of my skies that I edit in Topaz DeNoise AI. These are TIF files and they appear in the folder along with all of my other Raw files. I select the TIF file and import with no problem.

1. Don't care how old you are, VR is made to keep your images steady. I believe you are working up a rationale to purchase the Olympus.
2. Many here make the mistake in buying a mirrorless only to find that their hands don't fit as well because of the mini size of the camera. I strongly suggest you put the Olympus in your hands before you buy.
3. I shoot wildlife, a long lens on a mirrorless camera is not that much different in weight than a FF DSLR.
4. a 4/3 sensor is much smaller than the FF sensor on your D750. But, if your not going to go large on your images, then the 4/3 sensor should work out well for snapshot and cell phone type images.

I too shoot wildlife my kit is the Olympus OMD EM1 Mark iii and the 100-400mm Lens (with lens hood, tripod ring, 1.4x teleconverter, 2 PD plates, a Cotton Carrier hand strap and a PD wrist strap) the kit comes in at 2.158 Kg/4.71 lbs. I can easily carry this on my daily 6 mi nature trail hikes (I am 73). Not sure how a FF kit would compare weight wise. Do you have the specs on a similar kit?

My experience with M 4/3 is with the Olympus OMD EM1. The OMD EM1 Mark ii with the 12-40mm f 2.8 PRO lens comes in at 1.061 Kg/2.34 lbs. The OMD EM1 Mark iii with the 12-100mm f4 Pro lens comes in at 1.277 Kg/2.84 lbs. BOth cameras have excellent IS (5 stops).

Hi Guys,
Have recently purchased Olympus 12-40 mm f2.8 Pro lens. A wonderful
product but as I use the manual zoom, the lens makes a soft whirring
grinding type noise. Otherwise it works just fine. I am advised that his
noise is common with this lens but my Lumix 12-35 mm f2.8 lens is
completely silent while using manual zoom. Can anyone shed any light on
this? Is this normal for the Oly lens to do this?
Best regards to all.

Mine doesn't make any noise either. You may want to contact Olympus America to see if repair is needed.

As I ranted a couple weeks ago, with a credit score of over 800 I was rejected. Don't be disappointed if not approved, Synchrony has some weird requirements.

Interesting. I too have a credit score over 800 and was rejected. Maybe if it is too high, they feel you would pay off the balance on time and they would not make much money off of you.

I have been shooting Olympus 3/4 starting with the OMD EM1. This camera did not feel comfortable in my hand. I added an optional grip and it worked well. Starting with the OMD E1 Mk II and now the Mk III ) Olympus added a longer grip and this fits my hand very well (no optional grip needed). I am very secure holding the camera and have no trouble accessing the various controls. I like how light and small the camera is. I can easily carry two cameras with attached lenses in a Moutainsmith fanny pack.

Can anybody tell me how to get my Oly EM1 MkII to C-AF and C-AF+TR under Movie Mode?
Darrell Young's wonderful book doesn't tell why those selections are dimmed out.
I must have some condition that blocks their use, while I'm in Movie Mode.

Trying to shoot winter skiing videos! Gotta get this working!

Thanks for the help.

On my OM-D EM1 MkII I just set the Mode Dial to movie mode and pressing the OK brings up the Super Control Panel. I can navigate to the the AF mode box where I am able to choose C-AF and C-AF-Tr. Not sure why yours is grayed out.

My wife and I are heading out of Chicago to La Junta, Colorado on the Southwest Chief on an 18 hour train ride. We’ll be chasing a setting sun as we head west...in theory it sounds like it could a fun trip with Photo opps...unfortunately, from the observation car a person needs to be shooting through windows and train cars are constantly moving. Any suggestions on how to best minimize the obvious challenges?

On a train trip from Ft. Williams (Scotland Highlands) to Glasgow and from Glasgow to Edinburgh I have had some success using the LensKirt. It is a black hood that attaches to the window via four suction cups. The lens is placed in the hood and a draw string is tightened around the lens. I indicated some success for the following reasons:

1. The hood provides a 9" x 10" "window" to shoot through. While the hood does allow the camera to move right, left up and down that movement is limited. On a moving traing trying to position the camera within the window provided by the hood, I got many shots of the inside of the hood - both partial and full. I did nto not have the freedom to shoot through the much larger train window. Perhaps with more practice I will get better.

2. Since it attaches to the window it is not easily moved. If you have access to both side of the train (I didn't since the trains were full), the hood is not easily removed and switched to the across train window.

On the plus side it does not weigh much and can be easily folded in the camera bag. I was happy with the shots I was able to get. I am also aware of silicon hood designed for this purpose as well. Check B&H.

Enjoy your train trip.

My Olympus body has a setting I’ve been reading about and trying to grasp. Basically it is an image stacking feature with a twist that currently is unique to Olympus. The twist is that you first make an exposure of your foreground. Then you choose shutter speed and aperture and total time elapsed for subsequent exposures.

The initial image is stored by the program and remains sequestered and unaffected by your next set of images. Only new pixels that are picked up are recorded. When the full set of later exposures is finished the program then stacks them with the original foreground image. Therefore your initial image is not blown out by the subsequent shots.

So I spent five minutes just before dawn to give it a try from our backyard in town to see if it worked as I understood. My thinking was in five minutes of 1 second exposures I should catch a few beginning star trails.

It did as you can see a few trails starting to form. No effort was put into the shot other than try out the program not caring if the foreground was overexposed as that wasn’t my concern. The program will run up to 3 hours. This may prove to be quite useful and much more user friendly for night shot stacks I’ve done in the past with a Nikon body. I am going to try this out the next couple weeks when we are on Hawaii island and at the Kilauea volcano. No doubt some beach shots too. It should work well for milky clouds and water in night shots I expect. So, a whole new adventure to try. Amazing ideas the manufacturers are coming up with. Should be fun to work on.

All good advice as to camera settings and using a polarizing filter. I have also used a Lenskirt with good results. The Lenskirt attaches to the window via four small suction cups. The lens goes into the (black) skirt which cuts window glare and you look through the eyepiece as per normal. It does take a little practice to avoid getting photos of the inside of the skirt itself. B&H sells the skirt. It is a little pricey at about $48. I had some good results on the train from Fort William to Glasgow Scotland.
