Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words. I'm using my new little RX100 (actually a version 6, not 4 as I mistakenly stated) more and more each day, and I am getting the hang of it. I am truly amazed at the clarity of the images, far surpassing that of my Nikon 500D, Leica Q, Lumix 85, all pretty respectable cameras. I think I'm going to be OK. And I will get this crazy complicated menu system down pat before I leave on Sunday.
Thanks, again.

It depends of the main reason of your trip:
- Vacation: take the Sony
- Photography trip: take your full frame with lenses, tripod & accesories

Good way to look at it. Thanks

You should be fine with that Sony. It has an Auto setting (right?), and that will make photography fast. People have been bringing cheap, basic cameras on vacation for years, and they have come home with nice pictures. The Sony RX100 is miles beyond those cheap, basic cameras, so you'll do fine.

There is lots of info on YouTube.

Thanks for the re-assuring words. I’m hoping to report back that notwithstanding my trepidations, I’m going to pull this one off using Manual mode.

I’m leaving to Iceland in a couple of days and I am really committed to traveling light. So, I’ve decided to take only the outrageously expensive Sony RX100 iv as my main camera. I hear it’s a great little camera, if i can get thru the detailed menus before I take off. (My iPhone is my backup).

Any recommendations for a good YouTube tutorial or a readable, user friendly guide other than the online Sony manual would be greatly appreciated.

Any hints from experienced users would also be great.

Will I regret leaving my full frame or MFT with a variety of lenses at home and traveling instead with one of the smallest high quality compact bridge cameras instead?

Thanks

Call Apple Care 1-800-275-2273.
Whenever I have had an issue with Photos, they've been very helpful, and if the first technician can't be of assistance, they have a Photos specialist who really knows the program inside out.

The problem you will have is reflections from around you, I found the best method is where possible is to place the lens rim on the window, you can still tilt the lens a little if necessary, if you use a lens hood it makes taking photographs through the glass even easier.

If your lens cap touches the glass, your camera might pick up the train’s vibrations—which will affect focus and image sharpness.
Best to hold the camera steady with elbows firmly tucked into your sides—as steady as possible.
Don’t limit yourself to shooting through the glass from the car interior. You might also want to try standing out on the platform between the train cars especially when the train is going around a curve. Point the camera out toward the rear of the train to get an interesting view of the train bending around the curve.

We did that in Alaska. Very cool view.

I’ve learned from shooting ice hockey through glass 3 tricks that seem to minimize reflections: 1) wear black clothes (2) use as wide an aperture as possible, (3) point your lens as close to the glass as possible.
I use a Tamron 70-200 f 2.8 in shutter priority.
I wonder whether a ND filter would help.

Have fun!

I have been pretty much a JPEG shooter for a long time, and have finally decided to make the jump to RAW. I am wondering if anyone in UHH uses Mac's "Photos" program for editing RAW images, and if so, do you find it adequate? I have Affinity Photo, but find that difficult. It's a pretty heavy program with lots of features that I don't think I'd use to edit photos just for my own use. Same with LR, but it seems easier to use. I'd appreciate any good input regarding "Photos" for RAW editing. Thanks in advance.

I use Photos for editing many of my RAW images and find its features easy to use and adequate, if the image is well exposed and composed. In other words, the Light and Crop tools are denerally all I use in Photos. For images that need more detailed work, LR is much better. One of the reasons I use Photos is simply because when I import images on to my iPad or iPhone it automatically imports into Photos. I typically import and edit onto my iPad. Then store the “keepers” on LR CC. I have not found a work around that would allow me to import directly into LRCC on my iPad Pro.I believe that The soon to be available iPad Pro will allow import of images directly into LR and also will allow imports and downloads with a USB drive. HALLELUJAH! I recently discovered though that Photos does not read all RAW images. I shoot RAW with a Nikon D500 and a Leica Q which Photos reads and edits, but no luck with a Fujifilm x300. While I love Apple products, Photos can definitely use a few improvements for the more serious photography enthusiasts who shoot RAW. LR is a much better developed product than Photos. Maybe that’s why Apple will soon permit direct imports into LR and reserve its Photos for the more casual snapshots. Good luck! There are several good video courses on LR available on the web.

Mazel Tov on the “new arrival”. I’ve had a Q for about 2 years now and at least in my world of a photography it has become the love of my life. It’s such a delight to use and has exceeded my expectations.
It’s not without its limits, but nonetheless, a gem of a camera. Manual focus is great, but so is Auto. Enjoy, enjoy.

Most of the cameras discussed on this forum are Nikon, Canon, Sony and others. I don’t recall any mention of the Leica brand. The cost of Leica’s seem to be comparable to the heigher end Nikon, Canon, Sony and others. I’m curious. Do any of the UHH members have and/or use the Leica brand? If so, why or why not. Is it the cost compared with other brands? Is it features compared with other brands? What say the group?

i shoot street photography with a Leica Q because it is a delight to use and the images are very satisfying to my taste. It’s a delight because of its simplicity and reliability. It’s a camera first, with appropriate helpful technological innovations. Unlike my 3 other (non-Leica) cameras which are technology powerhouses first, containing deep, complicated menus and sub-menus much of which I choose not to use, but once you get past the computer like features, they also serve as cameras for purposes other than street photography. But, If I were to sell or trade any of my cameras, my Leica Q would be the last. There are many excellent cameras which serve as splendid photography tools for different genres, and I accept the limitations of each, but there’s something special about my Leica Q.

Simple; I like it.

If you’re going with a guide you should have no difficulties. There is a strong police presence to protect both tourists and residents. Do not buy cigars from anyone on the street. Only from the retailer La Casa del Habano. The best location is on 5th street in Miramar at 13th. Great lounge, aged rum and a restaurant. If you want to see 2 books I have published - there is a link on my website www.fotomacher.ca

Thank you all for your extremely generous comments, all of which are so very helpful.
The critics and nay sayers are duly thanked and, ignored.
But all the others have raised my spirits and I am so looking forward to this, my first trip, to Cuba.
Thank you

I’m leaving to Cuba for a 4 day trip. A private tour for two with a guide. Staying at a top hotel in Havana. I would greatly appreciate any advice on places that are good for street photos, street portraits and any tips on what should not be photographed. Also, any other advice to assure a safe and healthy experience. Thanks, BJW

Hi, all!
I need advice. I have been taking photographs of the basketball games at my local college. After a couple of years doing this, I have gotten results that, although they may not be up to pro level, nonetheless satisfy me.

I would like to share my better images with the players. I need a program where they can not only look at the pictures, but also might be able to download them and print them on their own.

What is the best and simplest to use program I can get for this job?

Additionally, I have no interest in selling the images. I am happy to give them away to the players and coaches. Are there any legal issues I should worry about?

Thanks in advance for input.
Hi, all! br I need advice. I have been taking phot... (show quote)

For the past 3 seasons I have been photographing my grandsons’ ice hockey games. The coaches of both of their teams have set up a page on “Teamsnap” which is an App/website through which they communicate all sorts of info to the members and parents. There is a “Media” page on the site where after each game, I post a variety of photos which the players and parents can easily download. As of now, There is a gallery of 3 seasons of games with an average of 50 shots per game posted. The day After each game, the photos are the highlight of discussion in the cafeteria. We’ve recently started posting videos on the site too. The kids and parents live them and eagerly await the postings after each game.
Lical newspapers covering the game get their photos from the site. Some even will throw in a photo credit line.

There are no legal issues since the site belongs to the team and the photos do not depict any event where there might be an expectation of privacy.
Some common sense tips:
1) limit your shots to the game, team members, opponents and coaches on the ice, court, field, etc.
2) no photos in the locker room. EVER.
3) don’t sell the photos-put them on the site for the players, parents and school to use as they choose, free of charge.
4) Avoid posting embarrassing photos.

Another good option for photo sharing is Google Photos or Apple Photos.
