My question is, especially for panning shots but also in general, is there a downside to using all electronic? I've seen extreme examples where panning could create a slanted image at certain shutter speeds, because of the line by line scanning, but in practical work, does it make any difference to use all electronic vs. mechanical?
Yes. Big difference. Gary Friedman's "Sonny A6300" book, section 7.25 has an extensive discussion on this "Silent Shutter" mode. A few, not all, items include:
1.You can’t shoot with flash.
2. 14-bit RAW mode is not an option here. The camera will automatically go to 12 bit.
3.Multi-shot modes such as High Dynamic Range (HDR), Long Exposure Noise Reduction, and Multi-Frame Noise Reduction (MFNR) aren’t available
4. The only Continuous Shooting drive mode available is "Lo".
5. Picture Effect and Picture Profiles are not available
6.Bulb shutter speedvis not available.
