Having added a D500 to my arsenal just last week I can say that, from my experience, you're going to be pleased. I can also tell you that as of Monday (I believe that's the correct date) you can get a OEM battery grip (worth $ 371) at no additional charge. When that deal becomes available, I would suggest that you get on the phone immediately! All that being said, I can say that, in my opinion, the D500 is the little brother to the D5 (yes, I have had one of those since it became available) as it inherits many features from that camera including the focusing system. I can tell you, from personal experience, the new focusing system rocks! What I have seen in my limited testing is that the D500 is not as good as the D5 in very low light, but that should be expected for the price difference. That doesn't mean that the D500 is bad, cause it ain't, but is is not as good. I bought my D500 to be the second camera when shooting action sports and, although I have not yet put it through it's paces, I have every expectation it will be great. I also own a D810, which is a stupendous camera, but it just doesn't handle action sports very well at all. As soon as I get a chance, and I'm hoping that will be over this weekend, I plan to do some testing of the D500 at a basketball game/practice indoors. I also am looking for a football game to test the D500 400/2.8 combination with and without a 1.4TC. After all that is completed I'll have much more knowledge and opinion. Finally, as a total aside, I have finally found that point-n-shoot I've been looking for over many years. That's called a D500 with a Nikon 20/2.8D lens without the grip. What a small, powerful and full featured street camera! Best of luck -- you're going to love this one!

Well -- your right, I just got on line and B&H is giving a MB-D17 battery pack, a back pack and a memory card, all worth $471.39, plus they still have the $200.00 discount - bummer. So do you think if I call them they will just send me the extras or do I have to return what I have (has not been delivered yet) and them buy it again? As for the D500 I just bought, everything I have read says that the D500 is really good for sports, in my case high school basketball which mean bad lighting, what I have read also says the the focus system is better than the D7200 - etc. etc. These are the reason that I bought the D500, I am not a professional, a good amateur, so who is right, all of the people on this site telling me that they are the same camera and I wasted my $ or all of the reviews I have read saying how good this camera is for low light sports?

the most important thing any hobbyist must learn is to stop second guessing himself. too many times we find after buying something, that we could've done without it. if you bought it, use it and enjoy it. I have a shitload of "stuff" around the house, when in doubt I tell myself " if seemed like a good idea at the time ".

I think you have too much GAS. Photo quality of the D7200 is almost equal if not better from the D500.

Remember that I bought the D500 for shooting high school basketball in various high school gyms which means the lighting goes from bad to terrible. Everything that I have read about the D500 says that it is better than any of the other Nikon's for low light sports, so is all of the information/reviews that I have read about the D500 being better for this application than the D7200 wrong?

I'm not a professional, so I have no NEED for any of the photographic equipment I have. It's a hobby, and as I have stated before, hobbies are not governed by the rule of reason. I just bought a 5D Mk IV recently. Did I need it? Heck no. Did I want it? Yup. Am I glad I got it? You betcha! I might spend some time debating with myself about buying something, but once I click on "Submit Order" that's the end of it for me. I don't give it another thought after that. In fact, after the latest toy shows up and I have played with it for a while I usually end up wondering why I didn't get it sooner.

I like your perspective on the subject, if you can afford it does it really matter if you buy something you want that you may not need? That statement could be how I talked myself into buying the D500, I have a separate stream of income from our house hold funds, my wife and I agreed that that money was mine to do with as I pleased so I am not taking $ away from the family funds. I actually take money out of that account and give to my wife so she can "waste" some $ once in a while. Having said all of the above, I guess the "cheap" side of me is where my questing the purchase is coming from.

You could always sell the D7200 and call it a day.

No I can't, my wife likes to take pic's also so I have to keep the D7200 for her, problem is she really struggles with how to work it, she keeps it on auto all of the time and sometimes still has problems. I bought her a Canon G15 a couples years ago and for whatever reason she has never really used it. The D500 does not have the "Auto" setting nor a flash, I don't care if it does not have a flash as I never use it, but she always has it going. So selling the D7200 is not an option -- believe me, I have thought about it.

You have 30 days to return for a full refund at B & H. Give it a run, decide if it really is a cut way above the 7200 and make your decision. There is nothing wrong with changing your mind.

Yes, I have already had thoughts of sending it back, but I am afraid once I get it in my hands it may be hard to send back, and - if you believe all the reviews I am guessing it is a step or two my D7200 --?

Have you ever bought something and before you bought it you knew you really didn't need it then you bought it anyway, then after you bought it your pissed at yourself for spending "THAT MUCH" money for something you really don't need. Last night I ordered from B&H a D500 and a Lexar XQD 128 gig M card and reader = just south of $2K. Problem is - I already have a D7200. My daughter plays on her high school basket ball team and I shot her games, so I figured I had to have this camera. Problem is I can get great shots with my 7200, but figured I could get better shots with a D500, which I'm sure I can but are they going to be $2K better with the D500. OH WELL

Thanks

Steve,
Need to apologize, around here B-Ball is basketball, not baseball. So in answer to your focusing question, court side, with the typical low light/bad lighting in a high school gym -- I miss a lot of pics because of bad focus. That is one of the reason that I want to go with the D500 because of what I have read about how great it focuses on action shoots and it does it in less than ideal light. No I have not had a chance to look at your video, will do it tonight.
Thanks

Hey All, new to this site and have never posted here. I shoot for pleasure and my own family "stuff". I had a D200 for years, last year I bought a 7200, obviously it is a great camera, but --- my daughter plays B-Ball on her high school team and I have not only been shooting her games but other games, other parents love the pics. Was happy with the 7200 until the 500 came out, have spend the last 6 months trying to decide if I should sell my 7200 and get the 500, obviously the 500 would be better for sports. My problems is justifying the cost of a new camera, I just bought a new Harley Road King, need to buy a lot of chrome for that, now that I can justify - grin. So dropping 2K for a camera that I "don't really need" but really want to have is hard for me to justify, my question to the group would be, what is a 7200 (body only) with 7300 clicks worth? I have looked at a couple different sites trying to get a feel for what to ask for it but have had no luck.
Thanks
PS - Sorry I don't have a profile pic, doing this from work computer and have no "cool" pics
