I am neither a professional nor a wildlife photographer, but somehow I have stumbled onto your suggestions and have been using them, except for 1/500 shutter speed which I don't need, for the past few yrs. I guess I'm not as unsophisticated as I thought! Thanks, John!

Took a trip to Concord the other day. Very interesting. The colonists, 400 strong, marched toward the "Old North Bridge" which was at the time guarded by 96 British Regulars. As they approached the bridge, the British opened fire on the Colonists, who in turn returned fire. This was the first time the colonists openly fired on and killed British soldiers. In the epic poem, "This was the shot heard round the world."
I hope you like my offering and will comment, good or bad.

Fellow UHH's:
I am looking at nikon 5000 series cameras. I believe the 5600 and 5500 are very similar with the major exception being that the 5600 has a touch screen. Is this important enough to choose the 5600 over any of the other 5000 series Nikons? I thought I would start out with one of these cameras with the 2 kit lenses (18-55 Nikkor and 70-300 Nikkor as-p ED lense; all refurbished). I am retired and have a limited budget, but want to move up from a bridge camera. Any suggestions or thoughts on the above or any of the other series 5000 cameras? My bridge camera has an articulating screen so I am wanting to keep that feature. Currently Cameta Camera has the above setup at $699 refurbished. I have read a lot of great info on this site, so I am looking forward to some good info.

Thanks,
Whatdat

I have two 5500s and love them. Use an 18-200 zoom almost the time.

Hi folks,

My s/o and I are planning a trip to Acadia National Park this August. We know it's not the ideal time of year for birding but we must go when our jobs allow. We've immersed ourselves in a wonderful site, acadiamagic.com, which has been very helpful for landscape, sunrise-sunset, etc shots. We, however, are avid bird photographers and this site does not inform us at all about the best areas for birding.

Is anyone here from that area who could give us some tips for the best mid-August birding?

We'd also both LOVE to capture some Puffin shots but we also know that must be done via boat. Any suggestions would be most welcome there, too. We'll be staying in a motel (last room!) in Bar Harbor but may also camp for a few days elsewhere.

Any and all BIRDING suggestions would be most welcome. And yes, I have searched UHH for anything related to Acadia.

Thanks!!
Donna

Donna, I don't know anything about birding, but I highly recommend going to the Schoodic Point portion of Acadia. Most people do not know about this area, but it is almost indescribably beautiful. It has far fewer visitors, and Winter Harbor has a great seafood restaurant in Chase's. I was stationed at the Naval Station in Winter Harbor in 68-69 which has since been deactivated, but I have returned to this area several times. Have a great trip!

My Nikon 1 J1 fell out of my pocket a week ago or so. The body was damaged. I sent it to Nikon's repair facility in Elk Grove Village. They quoted over $300 to fix the body. One of the hogs suggested that I look at the Internet for a used J1. I did and could get one for about $100. But the J5 only costs about $500 and I could use my existing J1 lenses.

Several years ago, I decided to get a separate insurance policy on my cameras because of expectant travel and fear of loss, theft, or damage. I insured my Canon and Nikon plus extra lens. The insurance was only about $150 a year for all of it. I had forgotten about the policy until after I sent the camera in for repair. I filed a claim and was told that as soon as I had an estimate for the cost of repairs, they would send me a check. Low and behold, I got the estimate, sent it to USAA and within two hours they had a check in the mail to me for the quoted cost to repair. I didn't have to have the camera repaired either - I could use it for a new camera. That means for $150 or so, I can upgrade the J1 to a J5 and still use my J1 lens. There was NO hassle and no deductible. I'm glad I got the insurance.

It's an FX lens, if that matters to anyone. I used the 18-200 on my DX. When I got the D750, I got the 28-200mm.

Same here. My 18-200 lens is my walkaround lens on my d5500 body and is used almost 100% of the time.

It's called "The Riverwalk" in those parts, and the food, dangerously tasty margaritas, shops (great art galleries!) and music are exceptional. Not far away (walking distance) is the Alamo. All are far more interesting than Six Flags. I'd take the fast 50mm and move close to your subject(s). /Ralph

You are giving up a lot with that move. I would suggest using the Nikon 18-200 VR II lens. It is much lighter than that monster lens and you will have many more options retaining your current Nikon D7100.

I second the motion re Nikon 18-200 VR lens. It is my walk around lens. Have used it for over 2 yrs. with zero problems! Enjoy!

A little over four years ago I purchased my Nikon D7100 from Hunt's Camera in Manchester, NH. Since I retired, the South Portland, Maine location is now the most convenient for me. Last week my D7100 for some reason would no longer auto-focus. I brought it up to the So. Portland store and explained the issue. The person I dealt with (I believe the manager or assistant manager) looked it over, cleaned the mounting surfaces of both camera and lens, played with controls and settings for a few minutes, frowned several times, and told me I had two options. He could send the camera out for repair which would take 6 to 8 weeks and cost me "lots of money." Or he could swap it for a brand new d7100 body at no charge. I did some quick calculating and opted for the latter. I never dreamt that that could happen after four plus years of use. I thanked him for the great service and he said "Just tell your friends." So that's what I'm doing now.

I'm going to Paris and only taking one lens. I don't want to keep changing lens and I want to lighten my load. I'm taking a 24-105 lens. Am I making a mistake?

Probably not. I used my Nikon 18-200 almost 100% in Prague and Vienna. Shots were great! Have a great time!
