Thanks for the tips and advice; we’ll see what happens! I usually do shoot in RAW.
BTW, I’m shooting with a Nikon D500 and a 910 flash, so I’ll use manual and stop down as necessary and see what happens.

Thanks again...

Hello Hogs,
I'm charged with shooting an adult birthday party tomorrow with approx. 30-40 folks in an outdoor park type setting.
The weather here in NY looks to be sunny to partly sunny.
The advice Im looking for is; use flash or not, knowing the advantages of using it at times for shadow fill, and if I do, can I get some setting suggestions for camera and flash? It will be a "roving" situation as opposed to portrait.
I have some experience with photography, but this has been a thorn in my side. I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Thanks Folks

Hello, I'm seeking some advice, and or solutions, to an issue I have discovered on my D500. I can't seem to get RAW images saved to either one of my cards; XQD or SD. I have checked my settings numerous times and all seems correct. I have RAW set for primary slot; (XQD) and jpeg for (SD), secondary. Any suggestions ??
Much appreciated.

It could be indicating that it's set for flash bracketing - check whether you have inadvertently activated that.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't seem to be it unfortunately.

Has to be in there somewhere!

Maybe in my old age, I can't remember, but I'm seeing an "amber" flash icon in the viewfinder of my d500, and would have sworn it was white at one time. I have searched both manuals without any mention of it.
Anybody have a clue?
Ive tried changing batteries in both units...NG. I'm just concerned theres an issue somewhere, and perhaps the issue is Me.

Thanks for reading this folks.

On the recommendations of other here I have switched both of my cameras to BBF. There was a learning curve, bit I will never go back. The primary disadvantage to me is if someone else tries to shoot, and doesn't know how to focus, it is a problem. I often leave a camera "laying around" and put it on "full idiot mode" for the family to use at will when we have family gatherings. I actually have gotten some pretty good pictures that way.

Uh OH, I shot my reply off a little too soon. I didn't realize there is a fix for that. Sorry. I will look into that. Thanks!

The ONLY problem I have had with BBF, is getting people who want me in a shot to remember to keep the button pressed. I show them what to do, and instinctively, I guess, they let go. result is obvious.
Otherwise it's Awesome IMHO.

OK, so if I'm thinking straight...from what I see, flash is not an option with these units that sit in the hot shoe, unless it's remote off camera. Correct?

Good Morning Folks...
Been searching Amazon for a remote shutter release for my D500,(Nikon). Nikon branded equipment is so costly, and after market stuff really cheap by comparison.
Does anyone have experience with any of these after market products? Ya know, Fathers Day is coming up and questions are being asked.
I appreciate any information offered.

Thanks, Frank

I mostly shoot birds. The simplest thing to keep in mind is that if the background is brighter than the bird use + compensation. If the background is darker than the bird use - compensation.

The reason is that unless you spot meter on the subject the camera will will try to lighten the dark background and will wind up over exposing the bird. With the same logic, the camera will want to darken the very bright background thus under exposing the bird. If you look at my post from yesterday you will see examples of both. I used + or - two thirds to one stop. All pictures were taken from the same spot at the same time. The dark backgrounds were in the shadow from my house.

Of course if your bird fills the frame [mine seldom do] compensation may not be necessary at all.

Wonderful Shots Bill...Could I ask you what you shot with, obviously if I know that, I could venture a guess how far away you were. Tripod no doubt ???
Beautiful.
