This was not a used camera but a brand new one. I share your view on extended warranties--generally they are not worth it--but fortunately for this time the retailer offered me a bargain price on a 3-year warranty plus accident policy and I was able to get the camera repaired for free. Ironically, perhaps, the repair shop was also an authorized Nikon repair center. All in all, if one forgives their not disclosing that the camera was grey market, the retailer behaved better in this instance than Nikon did.

Glad that Mr. T solved your problem but mine had to be different. I had not just been using the flash when the problem occurred and the first thing I checked were all of the flash settings. Also, turning the command wheel or the sub-command wheels had no effect on the speed setting which remained stubbornly at 250x.

I recently experienced Nikon's "grey market" policy. Unknowingly, I purchased a Nikon D7100 from a well-known retailer. It developed a problem and Nikon refused to service it because it was originally sold to a non-US distributor.

I assume that Nikon could easily track the camera back to the distributor who re-sold to the US retailer, but that than punish their own customer (the distributors) they choose to punish unwitting consumers. Not in my view either a fair or honorable policy.

Regrettably, I'm too much invested in Nikon systems now to switch-- but I will certain take Nikon's policy into account when asked for recommendations on which brand camera equipment to buy.

I recently had the same problem-- both in "M" and "S" modes. After considerably exchanges with Nikon's online tech support--who were unable to identify the problem and kept trying to point the finger at use on non-Nikon lenses and batteries--I had to send the camera in for repair. It's been fixed but I still don't know what caused the problem (which happened suddenly in the middle of a shoot).

ISO at 800 but I also tried higher settings. It was working fine in the morning (shooting flying birds) and then suddenly stopped. I've been using "P" as a workaround.

Suddenly my shutter priority controls have frozen: I can only choose between "320s" (or whatever flash sync speed I pick) and various bulb speeds and the aperture stays locked at its maximum. All other modes appear to work properly. I've tried changing lens, re-setting button functions, re-setting to default settings and generally pushing every button I think might help.

Anyone else have this problem or--even better--a solution?

I just bought a d7100 and am ploughing through the manual to see what's new and different from my (now) old d5000. One thing is choosing between 12-bit and 14-bit depth when shooting in RAW (which I generally do). If you know, please explain pros and cons in this choice-- other than that choosing 14-bit increases the file size.

I've been auditing the forum for a couple of months so far and have already learned quite bit. Looking forward to being a real participant. I would describe my skill and experience level as "aspiring enthusiast."
