Please check out Puget Systems for a computer built to exactly fit your requirements. They built one for me two years ago and it is still awesome. They help you every step of the way. They tell you what you need and also tell you what you don't need. Excellent CS. Not cheap, but nothing really worthwhile is. https://www.pugetsystems.com/

Hi Robert I had a play with your picture. Used PS camera raw filter to get the color ok, I selected and cut out the main people and blurred the background slightly to make them stand out. As there was a lot of black marks on the picture blurring the background helped. On the people I used the spot healing brush and went over them cleaning up the black marks..

Really nice job. Blurring the background really focuses on the subjects. Thank you, Bob

Wow! I've learned more from 'Yall than from all the tutorials on this subject. I did get the images to an acceptable level. I can't thank all you UHHers enough for your time and knowledge. All the best, Bob

Which scanner are you using? My Epson V500 scanner has a color restoration setting that does a very good job of correcting color shifts in prints and slides due to aging. Yours may have a similar feature.

Stan

I'm using a Epson Perfection V700 Scanner. It has a color restoration setting but obviously it doesn't work very well on this problem.

Thank you Stan

Scanning & digitizing severa hundred 35mm slides. Most are good but 12 (1 roll) are tinted like this. I cannot seem to correct this problem. I'm not an expert. I've tried photoshop & Luminar 4 with no success. Please help!
Thanks, Bob

Wondering what kind of spray other's are using on gatorboard or foam board. I've been using Scotch mounting spray but after mounting the picture I sometimes get small bumps underneath picture like a grain of sand or something. I thought it was me but after being totally meticulous before spraying I'm wondering if it is coming from the spray can. Is there something other than Scotch mounting spray other's use?

Here is a great video for mounting on gatorboard.

$900 won’t even begin to buy you a fancy camera; maybe, a decent lens (used)! If you want to look professional, pick up a Canon EOS 1D X Mark III with some nice white lenses (body only about $6500). Like real sports cars, pro cameras are not cheap. Oh, I forgot. Real pros own 2 just in case.

Why post such a egotistical response? This young person is reaching out to UHH members for honest advice, not snarkey responses. Your type of non-advice is totally unnecessary and pompous, not to mention arrogant.

I'm not a pro either but I'd say the lighting isn't doing you any favours. You seem to have shot the shadow side of the subject, which is seldom the best option, and the light seems to be dappled. Most of that can be corrected in post processing though.

Perhaps circumstances or timing didn't give you any options, but for those times when you do have options, the success (or otherwise) of this type of shot depends to a large extent on the lighting. Having said that, you managed to capture a very pleasant and natural smile, which most would say is THE most important thing.

A great critique. Thank you very much!

My Granddaughter going to prom several years ago. I'm certainly not a portrait pro or any kind of pro. Not much PP mostly crop and white balance. Just need some opinions. Thanks!

I keep seeing give her some old used camera that obviously no one wanted any more.
This is disturbing as she is now relegated to second class and not worthy of something that is hers.
There are wonderful brand new cameras at little cost with incredible features and the excitement of opening the box of a new camera that no one else has used and abused.
That right there says she is valued and what she desires has value and that there is confidence in her wanting to learn photography. Other wise the message is sent that she is expected to fail thus why waste time getting something new and nice that is all hers.
The exception is if she really wants a camera of yours specifically that she sees you truly value that would be OK but not one of your old discarded cameras you do not want that you have no value for.
It is the wrong message to some young woman desiring to learn and has expressed that desire strong enough to want more than a cell hone to get her a new camera that says this is all yours and not a leftover hand me down.

I am wondering why you didn't position her so that the flowers filled the background. Was that possible? With the proper DOF you would have had a very nice bokeh of color behind her. Having a split background is distracting. The use of a reflector could have placed some soft light on her face. The best light and sharpest focus helps your subject shine.

This was not a posed portrait. She was sitting on my patio and I shot the picture. That's it!

When I was young, My mother used to buy popcorn in a bag that had a cartoon of a guy eating popcorn out of a bag that had the same cartoon on his bag & on and on. I was fascinated by that and wondered where does it end? Bob

Like the great Louis Armstrong said when asked by Edward R. Murrow "Louis, what is jazz?" Louis replied "Man, there ain't but two kinds of music, good & bad. If it sounds good, you don't worry about what it is."
