If I was 40 years younger I'd be interested. As you have found, doing great work is not enough to make a portrait studio a success. I made a good chunk of my living giving workshops and seminars for the last 20 years I was in business teaching photographers how to do it. I am sorry that your talent won't be as readily available to the residents of the area.

If I was 40 years younger I'd probably go to Art School and start off with nothing, happily building over time. My runway is so much shorter :-) Thank you for your comment and kind words. This is not my first attempt at a studio, this time I think I trusted a "PR" person who was not nearly as competent as she thought she was (and I paid her what could have been another two years studio rent.) At nearly 60, I apparently have much to learn still.

Also note this may be one of my last sets in the studio (certainly the most fun to create). I am selling my studio https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-575089-1.html#9804213

Very very nice. I remember some portraits you posted last august. I particularly like the filter, or processing you used in the next to last.

Thank you:-) I like that one a lot too...

Is the studio capable of having a darkroom? Being a wet photographer, this is always a consideration.

Well, I suppose it could. The studio has an office which could be a converted to a darkroom. That would be one of those "talk to the landlord" deals. I attached a photo of the 4 lease sign. Jon Bunning is his name, and being that the building is historical in nature, he may have certain things that can't be changed if they were part of the original structure (but in many cases the walls inside were not original so he's okay with changing.)

More on the location: https://www.portraitsbyvin.com/thestudio.html

So you would be moving from Tempe if this studio works for you?

Well, I am throwing in the proverbial towel on my wonderful little studio in the 100+ year old "Irvine Hotel", including portrait samples, lighting, Maheu painted muslins, all kinds of stuff. New tenant gets a break on the rent until April after which it will be $2600/mo which in this area is very very cheap. The lease description is at the bottom of the post, a pdf of the layout, etc.

https://www.portraitsbyvin.com/inventory.html has the inventory of the studio on a link at the top; if you buy all in one lot you can get everything at less than half value. In March I will have a sale just before I put stuff into storage. Note that I am not selling cameras in the inventory; I intend to still be a photographer, I will just have to do this in my home or rental studio.

I would love to see this go to a photographer...I don't really want to leave it.

Thank you guys; was a treat to post and wake up to such nice comments. More info on the actor here: https://www.modelmayhem.com/JosephSteven

It is really enjoyable to photograph someone who a. came to be photographed, b. has really cool wardrobe, and c. is an expert at acting in front of a lens.

The various filters I typically eschew, but for the "graphic novel" look that seemed to suit the character I went for it. If you aren't familiar with Prisma, it is available only on mobile devices so you have to get good resolution images on your phone or tablet, then sift through the hundreds of instagram-like filters and try them until you find one that you like. The actual processing of the image is done on their server and then uploaded to your phone/tablet. Then you have to save them off wherever else you want the finished image (I use an android phone and "airdroid" to backup images.)

Best to all...

This actor was loaned some wardrobe from a Shakespeare company. A bit of photoshop, a bit of SmartPhoto, and lastly Prisma.

Another one from the set. Minor blemish removal, ran through Imaginomic Portraiture. No reshaping.

@stardust - I had a whole response typed up and then my browser went poof! Anyway the situation was my director friend sponsored this session for Naomi, and was "directing" her. I would try to find the angles, set lighting, look for expressions, and wait for the next pose. The first shot I was trying to reduce her body, her legs and buttocks...if you are a "butt person" I suppose that would be contrary. The second one the drape really should have been further back towards her derriere.

It's been years since I've shot nudes (used to have lots of them here, but for business reasons had to remove them.) I thank you for your response!

I have a friend who is an Indy film maker and director, and this is his "friend" Naomi. To my knowledge this is her first boudoir shoot. Some of the hair retouches aren't to my liking so you can avoid mentioning that part :-)

I've been doing my PP on Apple machines for just over 3 years and using Ps on PC machines prior to that. I use a MacBook Pro 2013 w/8GB and a 480 SSD for light work on-the-go and an iMac Pro at home for this work. I found that 8GB of memory was 'just enough' to use with Lr if you had a light load. 16GB is good and 32GB is better (which is what both my iMac and iMac Pro have on-board). Having only a 256GB SSD will work but it requires a careful watch on disk space if you want sufficient room for working files. As a very heavy, daily Lr user, the iMac Pro is THE machine for the job. For external drives I'd suggest you go Thunderbolt 3, or whatever the fastest level your machine supports. LaCie makes some nice 2Big systems for that. Best of luck.

guess I shoulda read your reply first; spot on.

Your macbook has thunderbolt that you can use for very fast external hard drives. If you did your memory upgrade and had a very good fast TB connected external drive, your internal hard drive should be sparse as it is used for apps and the pshop caching/temp files. Your performance with 16gb ram and nice external fast storage should be excellent. Also, having your backup solution like Crashplan back up from your thunderbolt drive is great since your libary is in one place, sync'd to cloud backup.

Like others have said, you don't need to use apple memory....
