Interesting article (link to follow in the next post.)

Excerpts:

"According to camera maker Ilford’s 2018 global photography survey, just under a quarter of people shooting on film – including many under the age of 40 – had never used this medium before. Rather than nostalgia, they are turning to film because of its aesthetic values and a greater sense of creative control over their photos. Globally, while the film camera market is still very niche, it’s growing fast."

"Work, effort, meaning – these ideas are all interconnected for users and consumers of analogue technology. Whereas work is often seen as a means to an end, from earning a living to exercising, “analoguers” get a buzz out of the processes of setting things up, getting things right, trial and error, and building up skills."

"Over the decade or so of our research, explanations for the analogue revival have shifted from nostalgia, to the desire for something physical in a digital age, to the sense that analogue technology is creatively preferable. The idea that working within limits, and needing to overcome them, is beneficial to art creation is now accepted by many within the creative sectors."

"Is digital technology de-skilling consumers, leading to a sense of alienation? And is this overcome by using more difficult analogue devices? This is the conclusion we have come to. Certain types of “serious leisure”, including sports and creative activities, provide us with intrinsic joy even if they are frustrating to engage in until skills are developed. Using analogue technology is another way consumers can feed this desire to re-skill."

Ah, I see we are in the Attic.

Trump is a con man and a criminal, and school shootings are happening, and students are often the perpetrators, and there are many who are arguing that there can be no restrictions on firearms, citing the Constitution in doing so. You may disagree with those positions but they represent expressions of opposition to your politics, not opposition to the country. Argue for your positions openly and honestly if you can. Suggesting that those who oppose you are therefore opposing the country is lazy and dishonest.

I agree that political comments are out of line here and I have no problem with you characterizing his remarks as "bitching." The "children have the Constitutional Right to take guns to school to kill their teacher and other pupils" and "elect a criminal con merchant as President" are comments attacking a particular political faction, not an attack on the country.

Cool. This guy starts of bitching about our forum and our country, and naturally people bitch back at him.

You are NOT listening, you are READING. Why are you reading this "vitriol" if life's too short?

Making negative comments about ones political opponents does not mean one is "bitching about our country."

Let's jeer at the person who is leaving. Go ahead. Mock him, make fun of him. Let it rip! That will prove that he is wrong when he claims that this is not a friendly place.

A diner calls the restaurant owner over and says "the waiter has been insulting me, spilled wine on me, and brought the wrong dish." The owner replies "hey if you don't like it here why don't you start your own restaurant and then you can get rid of any waiters you don't like!" The staff overheard this and started cheering. "You need a tougher skin!" one cried out. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out!" yelled another. "You snowflakes just want your 'safe space to eat!" said another. "I guess you can't tolerate opposing views!" yet another said.

You misspelled "sane." It should read "others" - (most people, actually) - "would prefer a sane place."

Nice. That is a great spread of Spring Beauty. We saw the first blooms here in northern Michigan yesterday. Definitely not a weed.

I constantly struggle to come up with what to shoot. Does it come randomly to you? Or do you plan and brainstorm and imagine the final picture first and then arrange to make it happen?

Do you shoot what you happened to see? Or do you create your shots?

Interesting. I have never looked for inspiration for my photography. I start with the content, with the subject, and I think of photography as a means to communicate about the subject, as a way to learn and teach about a particular subject. I think that for some, photography is about themselves as photographers, maybe even as artists, rather than about particular subjects. There is nothing wrong with that. For others, the client decides what is to be photographed. As Thomas said above, the inspiration or him is the paycheck. There is nothing wrong with that, and he is extremely talented at what he does. For others, the purpose of photography is for preserving memories of people and events. There is nothing wrong with that, either.

I have a strong interest in particular subjects, and photography is ancillary to that. Photography doesn't drive me to find subjects, the subjects have driven me to photography.

The photograph below was not about finding an inspiring subject for a photograph, rather it is photograph of a subject that interests me (and other people), a subject that I pursued, and that I photographed as part of a larger purpose. It is Phlox pilosa, a native species that is getting harder and harder to find in the area where I am focusing. I found a representative specimen, the blossom is at peak, buds and foliage are well represented. No doubt there are more exciting flowers out there, perhaps on another continent or in a herbarium or a flower shop. No doubt there are more inspiring - or more popular - subjects for photographs. I wouldn't claim that this image is art or even a particularly great photograph.

I do often plan and brainstorm and imagine the final picture. For example, I want to find and photograph Hill's thistle, Trailing arbutus, and a few other species this year. I have a clear mental image of what I am after there, and when I will go and with what equipment. It might be years before I get the photograph I imagined. To some extent I do create the shots, sometimes with lighting and sometimes with moving sticks and leaves. I sometimes spend an hour or more on one subject, and often make multiple trips to the same location.

For simple edits, something just to get started, I would suggest Irfanview. Free. It does crops, lighten/darken, sharpen, saturation, lots of things for simple edits. I would NEVER be without it even though I have several other editing programs. If you make it your default editor, every picture you open is already in it so you may edit or not. You don't have to open the program and insert a photo.
best wishes with whatever you choose.

I like the first one a lot. Someone said it looked desolate, but in the orchard rain is a good thing, and a rainy day means a nice break from work. Everyone's spirits were sky high when it rained.

I used to drive my little Saturn through the orchard and you could really hide out when it was raining. Of course, cell phones ruined everything because once they came into use there was really no way to escape completely. Looking at that photo I am transported back in time, sitting in my car on a rainy day in some remote quarter of the orchard with a hot cup of coffee enjoying the peace and solitude.
