Several bucks have shown up in my hay pasture the past few days as the temp hovers around 0. I "stretched" my 7DII and Sigma 150-500 for these.

Yeowser! These are magnificent. I love brightly colored photos. Throw in a cute little bird and you have perfection. I have put out over 100 pounds of finch food this fall, and never saw such a bird, ever. Thank you so much for lighting up such a dreary Wisconsin day.

Thanks. These are House Finches which are regulars at my feeder.

Wonderful shots, the second is fluffing up to get the warmth. By the way, is that a Play Boy Bunny as a catch light in his eye??

Nice eye, I hadn't noticed the shape of the catch light, but now that you mention it....
thanks.

I just had the same thing happen to me on Sunday. I contacted Adobe and let them take over and fix it. A lot of work and time. I never would have been able to do it on my own. They also said that I had signed out. I don't remember doing so, but sign in and never sign out. I also can't find some pics in Lightroom. I do backup so I know they are there, but what a pain in the neck technology can be. Good luck. Melissa

If you backup in LR, then your backup will have your current Catalog. You will probably need to copy your backed up Catalog back into LR and hopefully you will be fine.

So an update as well as an opinion (for what it is worth). After searching the web and adobe sites for a possible solution, I finally gave up and contacted support (via live chat). After giving the tech control of my computer, we managed to get everything back up and running with one small glitch. Because it was some sort of Catalog crash, I lost all photos since my last backup (which fortunately was just two weeks ago). Backup lesson learned and IMPRINTED. The Adobe tech was efficient, and solved my problem which I obviously wasn't cabable of. Now an opinion - I still see the CC as the most cost effective choice for ME. I didn't have Photoshop before because I chose not to afford it, so the addition of that software, along with the LR 5 and now 6 updates, I'm still a few hundred $$ ahead of the game. I started with LR2, and this is the first glitch (other than those that were self inflicted) that I have encountered. Love the software.

You probably should contact Adobe support. Do you have the license key as well as the original install file? I'd make a back-up copy of my catalog before doing anything. Create a new folder and copy the files from their current location to the new location. With the install files, if available, I'd re-install again and make sure the catalog includes all my last edits. If not, copy that back-up over the catalog from the install. Adobe can help with the install files and / or the license key.

I think I will have to contact Adobe. I have photo files, but no catalogs. I mean LR6 has totally vanished from my computer, all I have is my LR Photo file.

I have the CC subscription, and have used LR for several years, and love the program. However, this am I went to export several photos to a thumbdrive, and got some sort of error message regarding my catalog. The program then showed a window which wants me to sign-in for a trial version. After several attempts to bypass (I am definitely not overly computer software savy), I restarted the computer. My LR has now disappeared. It still shows as a shortcut, and in my programs, but when I open them, it defaults to the Trial Version sign-up. Anybody have a clue as to what the heck has happened, and how do I get my LR back.

In the AF section of the 7DII's menu screen 1 is the AF Configuration Tool. It allows the selection of six "Cases", starting with a multipurpose one. These determine how the AF will respond to changing conditions. For example, when shooting some of the critters that visit my property I often use Case 2, with the Detail settings at -1, 1, & 1. Seems to work pretty well for me under my conditions. Just curious as to what other 7DII owners have found to be a good combination for other circumstances, such as BIF or sporting events.

I started a similar thread in the BIF section with mixed results. In my research of several BIF "experts", it seems each has their own setting preferences (which obviously wasn't very helpful to me). The main theme from most answers is continued practice and experimentation, as to date my BIF hit rate is 0 (with my Sigma 150-500). The local dealer has suggested Case 1, and I think I am getting closer, but still not satisfied. Others have had success with this lens, so I know it is possible, I just have to find the right recipe.

Thanks again. In the past I have had "some" BIF success with the 6D, and I think my expectations were that the 7II would translate to a higher hit rate of success not less (which is the current situation). I willingly admit that my technique needs vast improvement, and I think that I need to continue to fiddle around with the AF system to find what works best for me. Sometimes patience isn't one of my greatest virtures.

:D As a side note, ironically (or not) the best BIF photos I have taken were with the 70-200 (along with not necessarily being patient, seems I may be a bit of a slow learner as well).

The 7D Mk II is a beast to get to know.
Great info, thanks. Do you use the High Speed Shutter, or the next step down? With my lens, I don't think that it can focus fast enough to accommodate what the camera can achieve at high speed. I think that the 100-400 you have is a faster lens. Wow you must have been right on top of that falcon.

PS: We will be back up there next summer and as always will be looking for good birding opportunities. We found the Ruby River area, above the reservoir to be great for hawks, cranes, and others, while the reservoir has lots of shore birds and white pelicans as well as a local pair of nesting Bald Eagles. Do you have suggestions for other areas as well? Good hunting.
Thanks I will keep posting with any progress. Ruby Reservoir is a great place, as is Ennis Lake. I monitor a page on Facebook called Montana Birders. It is pretty active, and one of the stipulations of posting photos is noting where the birds were located. Great source for finding places to go. Good shooting.

About the only thing I can add is that I feel your pain. Although I've been a photographer for almost 50 years, sports mostly, I recently obtained a Sigma 150-600 Sport with the idea that I'd like to try my hand at BIF in flight. Like everything else in photography, experience, technique, gear and patience are required in large measures. While I have most of the gear, the other three are sadly lacking in this area. What my brain has determined, since I have absolutely no patience, is that I should do some research on where I might find some birds to shoot. I would guess that, unlike dogs, treats will not be helpful with this subject! As soon as the current heat wave breaks, I plan to calibrate the focus on a few lenses and go some place to continue my practice. What I am trying to say, in a roundabout way, is not to be discouraged as this takes practice, work and dedication. Regis seems to be ahead of us with that. Best of luck. By the way, your posted pictures aren't bad.

Has either Tim Boyer or Arthur Morris hit on anything that works, for you? I just found the Boyer article, this morning.
I would have to say no regarding the AF fine tune settings by both photographers. I tried both AF fine tune settings. Now to be fair, the air has been pretty smokey, so how much that might be skewing the results is hard to say. I took the camera to the dealer (we have two great stores here), and they micro adjusted the lens to camera. I think that has helped some, but haven't now had the opportunity to test it on BIF. The dealer thought I should use the smallest focus pattern I can get away with (that is where I started, then expanded from there with no improvement in results). He also showed me how to check focus tracking speed in the various AF Case defaults, and now has me back in the default Case 1. I guess I will just continue experimenting until I find something that works (I'm remaining optimistic given the fact that others have had success).
