MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Relatives of a 17-year-old are angry the teenager was shot and killed by a homeowner who police say was protecting her property.

The sister of the teen who died identified him as Trevon Johnson. She said he was a student at D. A. Dorsey Technical College.

“I don’t care if she have her gun license or any of that. That is way beyond the law… way beyond,” said Johnson’s cousin Nautika Harris. “He was not supposed to die like this. He had a future ahead of him. Trevon had goals… he was a funny guy, very big on education, loved learning.”

The 54-year-old woman told police her surveillance system alerted her to the break-in of her home. She said she rushed home and found the teen climbing out of a window.

Investigators said they’re still trying to sort all of this out and want the public to remember that, if possible, it’s best not to take these types of situations into your own hands.

“If there’s any type of situation that happens or they believe there’s a burglary at the home or any type of confrontation, dial 911. Have the police make that confrontation,” Ferrin said. “That’s what we’re here for.”

The case has been handed over to state attorney’s office but, so far, no charges have been filed against her.

That's probably the very first thing that I've ever heard you say that I agree with you on! And, you are entirely correct....I am neither "consciously" (or "un-consciously ) racist! In fact Thom, I'm just NOT "racist" at all.

Here's a question for you; I you and I were to visit a prison together, and the inmate population of the prison was, say, 65% blacks, 10% hispanics, and the other 25% whites, If I, or anyone else were to say, "wow, look at all of those black criminals, thugs, perps, (or whatever you want to call them ), do you think that would indicate that I'm "racist"? If I said, "just look at all of those violent Mexicans"!.........Does that make me a "racist"?

I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time attempting to verify all of those statistics but I can assure you that if anything, they may even be a little on the low side. I can't help it if 74% all black babies born, are born to single mothers; I also can't help it if all of the young white girls who get "knocked up" and end up spending most of their life on welfare and "sucking at the public tit"; and I'll tell you something else, Thom.........in either case, whether you're talking about young black girls getting "knocked up", or whether you're talking about young white girls getting "knocked up", their "race" had absolutely NOTHING to do with the situation they all end up in! Being "black" has never made anyone "bad", any more than being "white" has ever made anyone "good"; those things are almost always a result of "association".......in other words, if you are born in the ghetto, there's a much better than average likely hood that you'll end up "associating" with all of the people who are already "thugs"; if you're unlucky enough to have a mother who spends her time on the streets, doing drugs, engaging in a degenerate "life style", the odds are almost 100% that you'll end up like everyone else who "hangs on the street";

I got discharged from active duty in the U.S.N. in late 1955; In 1956, I was working as a detail draftsman in the engineering department of a company that made machines for the papermill industry; one day I ran into a fellow I had graduated from HS with who now had his own flat bed truck that he hauled steel with; he was about to leave Ohio with a load of steel and take it to New Jersey, and he said, "why don't you go with me"? Long story short....I went with him; by the time we got back, I was driving the truck; a week later I was driving an old truck that belonged to a little Jewish fellow names Max Wise; (Max was probably about the second Jewish person that I became good friends with. I "learned to drive" Max's old truck on my way to Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio, (my home town ), I "learned" to load steel when I got to Armco, and I "learned" to haul steel on my way to New Brunswick, New Jersey; (all in 1956 ) In 1997, I retired from over-the-road trucking, with just over 41 years and nearly 2,000,000 miles in my log books.

From 1974 until I retired in 1997, I transported new cars and trucks from assembly plants all over the eastern U.S. to EVERY state except Alaska and Hawaii. The fellow who put me up to becoming a car hauler was a big black fellow named Richard Logan that I met at a truck fuel stop on the Pa Turnpike; during much of the 25 years that I drove car carriers, I worked out of a terminal that had about 300 drivers, and about 100 of them were black guys; I really can't say why, but overall, I always had more friends among the black guys than I did among the white guys.

Almost all of the black guys that I worked with were honest, hard working, reliable, and just great people to work with; a lot of the white guys were the same, but a couple weren't! (I had to give one white guy named Adkins an "attitude adjustment" in the driver's break room once. (almost got me fired! )

What I'm attempting to point out is, I really like "people"......and I tend to be rather "selective" about who I make friends with; anyone I make friends with has to be "good"......honest.......reliable......sensible.......hopefully, intelligent; race of ethnic origin make no difference. When my wife and I went to her oldest son's wedding on South Padre Island, me, my wife, both of her sons and her daughter were the only "white" people out of the 300 Mexicans who came to the wedding; I hit it off with a fellow named "Roberto" that the wife and I flew back down to South Texas a year later and stayed a few days with Roberto and his wife.

Most people tend to become like the people they fraternize with; good people "hanging out" with bad people tend to sink to the same level; the only thing race has anything to do with it is the fact that most people tend to live in neighborhoods where others like them live; it's this "association" with all of the "no-goodniks" that ruin so many young black people; a very few, (like Dr. Ben Carson ) are fortunate enough to have a great Mother to "show them the way" and they make something out of themselves; if Dr. Ben's Mom had been a hooker instead of a great lady, Ben would have probably become a "thug" instead of a neurosurgeon. Looking back over my life, I regret that I wasn't better father than I was, but all of my five kids ended up going to college; my oldest son has a PhD in EE and has designed weapons systems for the Navy for 25 years, my youngest son is a geologist and vulcanologist, my oldest daughter has taught the piano for the last 35 years now, and my middle daughter went to grad school after college and got a degree in linguistics in order to be able to go to South America to help translate the Bible into about a dozen languages that don't have it.

A capital murder suspect who busted out of a jail in Mississippi last week tied up a family at a home in Vicksburg Thursday morning before one of the homeowners broke loose and killed the intruder, investigators revealed.

Police said the unnamed homeowner shot Rafael McCloud in the head. The entire encounter lasted roughly three hours.

McCloud fought with the husband and wife, stabbing the man in the shoulder, Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said. The wife also had injuries, but not enough to go to the hospital. The toddler was not hurt.

At some point after being tied up, one of the couple managed to get a gun they had at the home and shot McCloud, the chief said. He did specify exactly who got free and how they did so.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace confirmed McCloud was the intruder. Police were called around 7 a.m. to the house in northern Vicksburg, where the homeowner told police he had been attacked by the man who broke into his garage around 4 a.m.

Police did not know of any connection between McCloud and the family, who lived on a street of small homes that runs along a ridge north of downtown Vicksburg.

Investigators found McCloud's body in a bathtub, according to The Vicksburg Post. His death ends the manhunt that started when the 34-year-old escaped the Warren County jail March 2.

McCloud used a homemade shank to get the jump on a jail officer, Pace said. McCloud forced the officer to give up his keys, radio, pants and jacket, and went out a door to escape. The century-old jail in downtown Vicksburg has no perimeter fence.

Officials combed the town on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River for days, interviewing family members and friends of McCloud and poking through abandoned buildings. Schools bolstered security, and Vicksburg police warned people to bring in guns from vehicles and make sure their houses hadn't been forcibly entered.

McCloud was indicted on murder and rape charges in the January 2015 death of Sharen Wilson. He had been held in the jail since his June 29 arrest, and has prior felony convictions for auto burglary, grand larceny and armed robbery.

This story explains a lot more than just what happened in this incident; it points out to anyone with half-sense what's happening day after day, time after time in the black "community"; it's very easy to look at a story like this, and "assume", "another black thug bites the dust"; and this is exactly what many people reading this story ARE thinking; the bigger problem is though, yes, in this case the "perp" was black, but I don't really think that merely "being black" is what causes so many young black people to become criminals; also in this case, this young black guy was heavily "influenced" by a radical, "leftist" College instructor, who just happens to be "white"! John Kevin Wood and his wife, Melissa, have sued Charles County, Md., schools, alleging that lessons on Islam violated their daughter’s civil rights.

John Kevin Wood says his daughter’s school has banned him from campus for more than a year, illegally punishing him for raising objections to classroom lessons about Islam. Now he’s gone to court for help, asking a judge to remove the ban so he can watch his daughter graduate from high school.

“She’s in the final semester of her senior year, and as it stands right now, she’s going to have to go through that life experience without her dad there,” said Kate Oliveri, a lawyer from the Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center who is representing the Wood family.

The dispute dates to October 2014, when Wood’s daughter showed him several assignments for her 11th grade World History class at La Plata High in Charles County, Md.

She had been asked to memorize the Five Pillars of Islam. She had been asked to write and recite the shahada, the Muslim statement of faith: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. She had been taught, according to school papers submitted to federal court, that most Muslims’ faith is “stronger than the average Christian.”

The lessons also taught that Islam was a “peaceful religion,” court papers say, and that “jihad” is a “holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty; a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline.” Wood is a Marine veteran who had lost two buddies in combat in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm.

The school wasn’t just teaching Islam but was promoting it, it seemed to Wood, and in a way that amounted to an assault on his family’s Christian faith.

When Wood called to complain about the assignments and request alternative work for his daughter, school officials issued a no-trespass order against him. Wood has not been allowed to set foot on the campus of La Plata High since October 2014.

The order, which Wood’s lawyers posted online, says that Wood “made verbal threats against the school.” The legal battle now centers on whether the school system unfairly punished Wood for speaking out.

In court papers, Wood says he never threatened physical harm against the school or its staff. Instead, he said, he threatened to take his concerns public by going to the media and to lawyers.

The dispute turned into a legal battle last month, when Wood and his wife, Melissa, sued the Charles County school system, alleging that La Plata High’s lessons on Islam violated their daughter’s civil and constitutional rights.

“The First Amendment prohibits the promotion of the religion of Islam over other faiths, such as Christianity or Judaism, in our public schools,” says the complaint, filed in U.S District Court in Maryland.

Katie O’Malley-Simpson, spokeswoman for the Charles County school system, said she could not comment on pending litigation. But when Wood first raised concerns about the assignments in 2014, the school system released a statement clarifying what students learn in its World History classes.

The unit to which Wood objected is meant to teach about Middle Eastern empires and the role that Islam — along with politics, culture, economics and geography — played in the history and development of those empires, the statement said. The course covers other religions in other units; students study Christianity when they learn about the Renaissance, for example, and Hinduism and Buddhism in units about India and China.

Now Wood is asking the court to rescind the no-trespass order, alleging that the ban violates his First Amendment rights to speak about and advocate for his daughter’s activities at a public school. School officials banned him only because they disagreed with him and “wanted to quash criticism of their pro-Islamic curriculum,” he argued in a motion filed on Monday.

O’Malley-Simpson said she had not yet seen Wood’s motion asking the court to rescind the ban, and therefore could not comment on it.

The dispute is reminiscent of a controversy in rural Augusta County, Va., that drew national attention in December after a teacher assigned a calligraphy lesson that asked students to write the shahada in Arabic. Objections from local parents went viral on social media and cable news, triggering a slew of messages that didn’t specifically threaten students but nevertheless persuaded officials to close the county schools.

Parents elsewhere in the country, including in Tennessee and Georgia, also have raised concerns about lessons that center on Islam.

Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the Maryland lawsuit is “an example of the anti-Islam campaign that’s being waged nationwide in schools.”

“It’s just this hysterical knee-jerk negative reaction to anything to do with Islam or Muslims in our society,” Hooper said. “To merely say the shahada, the declaration of faith, or to understand what Muslims believe — it in no way converts you to Islam, that’s a ridiculous notion. Islam is a belief system. You’ve got to believe in it or you’re not a Muslim.”

Experts say that it’s especially critical for children to learn about Islam and other world religions now, as fears of terrorism linked to jihad have become an increasingly dominant part of the country’s political debate.

“To be an educated person, to be a citizen, to be part of the global conversation, to be engaged in our world, religious literacy is essential,” Charles Haynes, vice president of the Newseum Institute and founding director of the Religious Freedom Center, told The Washington Post in December. “How are we going to live with one another in one of the most religiously diverse societies in the world without understanding one another?”

The school official(s) that banned this father from school grounds should be taken out to the public square and flogged. The father had every right to complain that the curriculum was not in his daughter's best interest. Personally, I think the family should sue the school district civilly for violation of their civil rights and pain and suffering caused by such a capricious decision.

I might not like the world history curriculum in that county. But it is a world history class and students DO learn a lot about different religious beliefs that had an effect in world history. I might even agree with Mr Woods' sentiments, but I have a big feeling that his opinion was not expressed in a civil manner. We'll see how this case goes.

Good Advice From Someone Who Should Know!

CBS's Scott Pelley interviewed Hillary Clinton on Thursday night. One exchange tells you everything you need to know about Clinton's struggles in the Democratic primary race so far and why she continues to be dogged by questions about her honesty and trustworthiness. Here it is:

PELLEY: You know, in ’76, Jimmy Carter famously said, “I will not lie to you.”

CLINTON: Well, I have to tell you I have tried in every way I know how literally from my years as a young lawyer all the way through my time as secretary of state to level with the American people.

PELLEY: You talk about leveling with the American people. Have you always told the truth?

CLINTON: I’ve always tried to. Always. Always.

PELLEY: Some people are gonna call that wiggle room that you just gave yourself.

CLINTON: Well, no, I’ve always tried —

PELLEY: I mean, Jimmy Carter said, “I will never lie to you.”

CLINTON: Well, but, you know, you’re asking me to say, “Have I ever?” I don’t believe I ever have. I don’t believe I ever have. I don’t believe I ever will. I’m gonna do the best I can to level with the American people.

I mean, what? W-H-A-T? "I've always tried to" tell the truth? On what planet is this a good answer for a politician?

The answer, of course, is on no planet. While I am less familiar with politics on Mars than I am with those on Earth, I am pretty sure that being unable to simply say, "Yes, I have always been truthful with the public," would be a problem on the Red Planet, too.

This a double whammy of bad for Clinton.

First, it does nothing at all to quell concerns about her ability to be honest and straightforward. In the New Hampshire exit poll, more than one in three (34 percent) of all Democratic primary voters said that honesty was the most important trait in their decision on which candidate to support. Of that bloc, Bernie Sanders won 92 percent of their votes as compared to just 6 percent for Clinton.

That's broadly in keeping with national polling over the last year, which has consistently shown large majorities of voters voicing skepticism about Clinton's trustworthiness. Her answer to that criticism has, to date, been to blame it on a Republican Party obsessed with her and willing to say or do anything to tarnish her reputation. There's truth in that, but, as the New Hampshire exit numbers suggest, the problem is bigger than just Republicans out to get her.

Why Sanders might have an edge over Clinton with minority voters in Nevada

Once considered a firewall for Hillary Clinton, Nevada has sharply turned into a tight and unpredictable contest for the former secretary of state as senator Bernie Sanders steadily gains support from critical voting blocs.

Second, the answer from Clinton on honesty reinforces a perception that the former secretary of state tries to play with words, giving a heavily couched response when a simple one would — and should — do. You can imagine people rolling their eyes or saying, "Why doesn't she just answer the question?" while watching that painful response by Clinton.

I think I understand why she answered the way she did. She knows she has been in public life for a long time and that she has said lots and lots of things. Because of that, it's possible that at some point in the future, someone will unearth a statement in which it could be construed that she wasn't telling the whole truth. Clinton is protecting against the damage incurred by such a revelation.

But when you have the problems regarding honesty and trustworthiness that Clinton does, the only right answer to Pelley's question is: "Yes, I have always been truthful. Of course." That Clinton didn't give that simple answer suggests she is either (a) unaware of or doubts the depth of voters' concerns with her ability to be honest, or (b) she is so naturally cautious as to get herself in trouble even on a question she has to know is coming.

Hillary is TOAST!
