Neat bug - what kind is it?

It's just a moth. With giant eyes.

What is that? weird!

Just a moth. Similar colors as a monarch. I just caught it at a good angle. I actually love the legs that look ready to run out of there (like most of my subjects that wish I'd just snap the photo already)

It just needs a snake swimming across those reflections...

Do these lashes make my eyes look big? (no trickery involved by the way).

You are all the best. I actually did print this with an even closer crop and I like it a lot, but was bothered by no context. I wonder if I can enter both (with more refinements based on your comments) and just tell the judges to pick their favorite :) Thank you for taking the time to dig deep and give me so much feedback.

If nothing else I don't feel like such a moron being unable to decide! I appreciate the feedback (all of which I agree with.)

I've debated and debated and I finally decided to ask for your kind advice about how much I should crop this photo (or anything else you might suggest.)
I plan to enter it in a little photo contest. I've had it printed 4 times but keep refining.

I started with Photoshop because I won it in a drawing. Hard to learn? Yes!!! But so glad I did. (and am, since I am pretty sure you can never completely learn it-there is just SO much there!) . Later people told me to just use LR because it's easier but I always end up back at Photoshop, and now it doesn't seem that difficult. I'm glad I started there.
Here's my question. My clone stamp and blur tool are terrible. I have CS6. I want to try out PS CC but I worry about what happens when I can't afford it (retirement is looming) and need to go back to CS6. What will I lose? And is it worth the money when I am not doing 3D, animation, etc. If you started with these free programs, then switch, is it a problem?

Organizing your photos is a very important aspect. Were I getting started now, I would be inclined to use Lightroom, for that reason. Which ever way you end up, you want to give the organizing problem good thought. I think processing is something you just grow into. You should do a lot of reading and youtubing to get the lay of the land so to speak. You already have very good advice here. I like the suggestions of free, and get your feet wet using something. You don't have to rush to a decision. There is an almost religious distain among some folks for using PP at all, but for most of us it is an integral part of the photographic process. As you settle in, you will identify things you are particularly interested in doing with your photos beyond the basics, and could find yourself adding an additional program from time to time for the way it handles a specific task. I use photoshop. Its what I got started with. I doubt that I would have had I not had a friend usher me into it. Its a program deep and vast. It can be confusing for sure. Im pretty sure you wouldn't call it intuitive, but once you get the hang of doing things with it, you wouldn't be willing to part with it. Thats my two cents worth.

I just won 2 photo contests with photos I took with my little waterproof Olympus. I would strongly suggest you do not tether your camera and do look for a vest that has a pocket. It's really surprising how strong a river current can be. We were kayaking the Raisin River out of Tecumseh Michigan (a BLAST by the way and you can rent kayaks there inexpensively) and I got up against a log and over I went. My camera was tethered to a chain and it snapped. The force of the current was amazing. I am grateful that I never take my camera on the water without attaching a floating strap so my daughter plucked the camera from the water (where she then had a blast taking photos of me!)

We have been trying to decide what splurge vacation to take this year. It was between Banff (crazy with tourists) and Alaska. When I talked to AAA about Alaska she said, "Oh everyone is going there!" When people see how stunning it is there won't be anymore lonely roads.

I wondered how your trip went and what suggestions you might have. I got online today to see about booking hotel reservations and realized what an enormous place this is, and got overwhelmed at the number of options! We are planning on going this summer or in Sept.
I can hike up to 5-6 miles on the AT (about kills me but I can do it) but it's not quite the elevation of the Rockies.
Any hints or suggestions that you would like to take the time to make would be appreciated.
