Any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive pocket type camera for use while kayaking, preferably with some type of zoom? Just got the kayaks & I'm not quite ready to take my DSLR with me.
Also, (not camera related) any suggestions for a good life vest for kayaking?

Not to be a smartass but shouldn't you have thought of the life vest when you bought the Kayak? I would think a shop the sells kayaks would be the place .
Small, waterproof to 20 feet and a 18 foot cord

Well, yes, I did think of it. They have them & they sell them. But, I got a great deal on the kayaks, so I jumped at it. The ice is barely off the lakes here, so I have time to shop for accessories. I just thought that someone with kayaking experience might be able to point me in the right direction.
Being crude, how much is your ass worth? Should give you a price range, after all I'll be hanging from it. LOL

hi kt...I use a canon sx60 bridge camera when kayaking. i keep it in a ziplock bag when not using it.
i do my kayaking on a lake and so far I've never gotten the camera wet. i too have been thinking about a smaller, pocket
type camera but have no idea what to get, but the sx60 takes great shots if i can hole it steady. i bought my kayak and vest
at a kayak store in Columbus, Georgia. it is an astral pfd ronny...zips up the front, and has 2 straps on each side and straps
at the top so you tighten it up snug. it's comfortable and works fine for me. cost was $99.00.

Thank you for the quick reply and your helpful, constructive advice.
Most small pocket size cameras only have an LED screen as a view finder. Take it from someone that takes most of my pictures from a kayak, you can't find your subject in the LED screen with the sun shining and reflecting off the water. I use a D3200 and have never had a problem with it getting wet. Just keep the lens cap on to keep any mist off the lens from the wind blowing across the waves. They make special kayaking vest that are cut higher in the back so you won't have to lean back on it in your seat.

I used to do a lot of rafting and some kayaking every year, and years ago I got my girlfriend a little Pentax OptioW60, a tiny little thing, that's waterproof to 33' (it fits in a pocket), 10mp, shoots bursts of 6fps and it takes nice pics! She is still using it when on the water. But now that I have COPD, I don't think I'll be able to do the rafting anymore, so I will sell my raft, frame, oars, life vests (I have 9) etc. I miss it already!!! I will have to check out my vests, next time I'm at my house again (I have different brands, but all are the same class). Don't know the brands in my head right now. But there is one thing you could check out and that is the NRS catalog (online version). That is a catalog for rafts, but they have all kinds of gear and supplies, as well as all kinds of life vests for kayaking and rafting! Kayaks, paddles , wet suits, just everything you can think of, they have it!
My kayak camera in an Olympus Tough TG-870. I keep it tethered to the boat with a ~4' cord. I often take my Canon 6D in a Plano ammo box [url]
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P3WS02/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1[url] positioned between my legs in the boat and tethered with a cord. I access that camera when I am floating stable, otherwise the box is sealed. The little Olympus is handy for quick shots of water birds and other critters. The Canon with a wide angle lens is great for water level panoramas.
The criteria for a vest is mainly comfort. All the approved vests will keep you afloat. As mentioned, get a vest designed for kayaking.
Paddle on
Olympus tough..... great picture, very good video, shock tested, New one can shoot in raw to. Water proof I think the new one to 50 ft.
They had refurbished ones for about $150 the other day.
