Stay with a system you are familiar with. Buy the Fuji XT4/XT5 or Canon system and some lenses or if you don't want all of the lenses after the trip, buy the lenses you want and rent the rest.

If there is a local camera store, take her there and see what type she may be interested in; bridge, DSLR, mirrorless, lens selection, APS-C, m43, full frame, etc.

My copy of the 100-400 lens has a loose front piece (about 2" long). There are 3 screws that attach the front to the rest of the body and 2 of them are missing. I want to get it repaired but OMS wants over $400 for the repair. This seems to be some sort of set price regardless of what is required. The lens has not been dropped, so I have no idea when the screws went missing,

Can anyone recommend or suggest an independent shop in the US that can replace the screws?

I found the video to be a fair and unbiased assessment. I shoot mostly stills (99%) so the absence of more advanced videos features in the OM-1 was not a problem. I just need short clips of the grandkids, not 8K 60p.

Before making this switch, I also looked at the G9. I liked the camera very much, but had some concerns of the AF system.

Yes, I know but they seem to be stronger lately. And yes 5K would make sense with a 27 or 32 inch screen. I have an LG 5K 27" screen now for my MacBook Pro but it would make a great 2nd screen for any new larger iMac.

What LG display are you using? I am thinking of getting another 27" to go with my Apple Studio display.

If $$ are an issue, and if the iMac 24 screen is too small, I would look at driving your existing 27" with a Mac Mini with the new M chips.

Not sure if this is possible anymore. I think Apple discontinued the Target Display Mode on their newer hardware.

The Apple Silicon iMacs with the M1/M2/M3 chips are significant improvements over the Intel chip iMacs. Many people have been using a basic M1 for there photo editing needs.

Apple just recently announced the updated 24" iMac with the M3 chip. The faster and more expensive M3 Pro and Max chips are reserved for the laptops for now. If you are interested in going for the new 24" iMac, I would get the M3 CPU/GPU upgrade (4 ports) and the 24 GB RAM option. Apple charges $600 to get the 2 TB SSD. A larger internal SSD is not available.

If you need a 27" monitor, there is the Apple Studio and Studio Display option, either new or refurbished.

There have several discussions on UHH on the Apple M1 chips. Here is one discussing the 24" iMac versus the Intel 27" one.

The UHH member Burkphoto has written many good comments on the Apple Silicon system.

I have tried various types of gloves including those that can pull back exposing the fingers for operating a camera. I have cold-sensitive fingers due to previous outdoor activities and have settled on a thin pair of silk liners with oversized mittens that I can stuff with heat pads.

Nicely planned! Did you use some app to verify the sun wouldn't go behind the spire?

My method is to have a large capacity storage card in the second slot. It is set up as backup. Once my photos from card one are downloaded and backed up I format card one in the camera. The card in slot 2 is monitored and when it reaches capacity it is removed and replaced with a new high capacity card and the full one is stored as another form of back up. This is the method I started using about a year ago. Before I would format both cards once the photos were downloaded and backed up.

I am debating purchasing a fireproof safe and storing those full cards there or trying to decide if it would it be better to put in the safe deposit box at the bank.

I would lean to an offsite storage facility like a bank. Fireproof safes come with different ratings and although papers in the safe won't burn, high temperatures could affect the cards.

WE just bought Li ion powered e-bikes and are following the manufacturer's directions about using these. For longer storage we were directed to remove the batteries at between 50% and 80% charge and store them in a well ventilated location, but not where they are subjected to < than 50 degrees. We even stored them on baking racks for more ventilation and not close to each other.

One of the leading causes of fires in New York City is from the charging of sub-standard e-bike and scooter batteries.

So in an unfortunate drinking accident I dropped my Lumix ZS 80, and now the lens is stuck open and it won’t take photos. Any one have a favorite repair place they have used for Lumix? Just a side note: I have drunk dropped my Sony RX 100 more times than I can count and it never broke!

No recommendation on the camera repair but maybe buy an OMS TG-6 that is supposed to survive drops.

I have the latest SONY RX100 M7

It DEFINITELY has a viewfinder

I have a Sony RX100VA, a revised version of the RX100V. It has a pop-up viewfinder and can be found at used camera sites such as KEH (US) and MPB (US/UK). The later versions have a longer zoom range but are more expensive. It's a great pocket camera.
