A freshly formatted drive with fresh Windows will run like lightning and virtually every problem will be resolved. If you're just hoping to justify a new faster computer don't tell hubby about this though...

:). Bless his heart, he knows if I want something bad enough I'm going to get it eventually. I wish I was more computer tech savvy.

RixPix, have no idea how to ck the properties. When I start having trouble I would take it to my 'go to' guy who is a dell tech.
Handgunner, I've taken photo files off and some other things but it hasn't really gotten better. I do have an external drive at home ( Alabama) not helping me much tho here in Canada.
MisterWilson, thanks for the article.
I'll be looking for a computer with good graphics. It is just a waiting game right now until I can get home and find one. I guess now the question would be the brand that would be best for photo editing.

So I find myself in Canada and my computer is on the brink of death. Can't download photos or do any editing. I have a Dell but now looking at something else to get. Everything is more expensive up here and the bank ( hubby) says wait until I go home which will be in about a week and a half. Uhgggg! What would be the best for photography and photo editing? I know everyone has their picks, just trying to get an idea. :?:

How old is the computer?

RixPix, it has windows xp if that says anything. I'm thinking it is about 5 yrs old

Okay, have you ever used CCleaner? This is a free program that will clear up a lot of issues on XP. You can get it here...http://www.piriform.com/promo/ccleaner-160512?gclid=CKSi277XybICFQoFnQodgGkAUA

Do you think you can download the free version of this program? If you can and you run it you may buy yourself some time. I am looking for a new computer also. I have a 3 year old Dell that is working fine but it is Vista and some of my recent software purchases will not run on it. So I understand your frustration. My sister-in-law just spent $2600 on a mac. In my opinion that is just too much money to spend on a computer. I am looking at a HP at Costco for around $700.

Let me know if you can get the program on to your computer.

From what I understand, it is full. About the best I can do is access the Internet, there is no room to add anything else.

Thanks all for giving me 'food for thought'. I haven't lost anythin thank goodness and it can all be transferred. I'm looking at an Acer laptop here with price tag of just over $1000. which includes having the info from the old computer transferred to the new one. So I'm sitting here chewing on wether to go ahead or wait till getting home.

I thought when photographing bright landscapes ie. snow, you would under expose. What is the rule?

Many make that mistake. The rule in bright sun, snow or beach, is to UP your EV by 1 or 2.

The reason is that your camera metering is seeking to make everything gray. If the snow or bright sand dominate your image it will expose to make them gray. You need to up the EV to get them back to white.

Alternatively if you can spot meter on something other than the white stuff that can work too.

Thanks MtnMan for the reply. :-)

I always overexpose by one or two stops. The snow's reflective surface fools the metering system to about 18% grayscale, so you need expose for brighter. Your camera's bracketing feature(if so equipped) will help you with that prob.

Thanks, I'll try that next time.

If I remember,

When photographing snow, the sensor thinks it is seeing neutral gray and you get a darker image. One increases the amount of light.

If I am incorrect, others will correct me quickly.

Well shoot. Guess my images I took of snow capped mts. and the Athabasca Glacier will be darker than if I had left it alone. Thank you so much for the reply Lightchime. Looking to go back as well as have other opportunities to shoot in snow in the next couple months. :)
