So I find myself in Canada and my computer is on the brink of death. Can't download photos or do any editing. I have a Dell but now looking at something else to get. Everything is more expensive up here and the bank ( hubby) says wait until I go home which will be in about a week and a half. Uhgggg! What would be the best for photography and photo editing? I know everyone has their picks, just trying to get an idea. :?:

It's expensive but I'd recommend a Mac. I currently have a MacBook Pro and store my photos in iPhoto ready to edit in Photoshop Elements 6 and CS which do almost everything. I'd love to have Lightroom but I think that is going into the realms of fantasy for me!

I still don't believe "those in the know", but am told Macs are better for photographic work.

Does your computer work at all? Do you have your pictures saved on your hard drive or to a cloud? If your work is saved to a cloud then it's cool beans. You can retrieve them from whatever computer you want. I back up all my stuff to an external drive in case my puter takes a dirt nap. Good luck.

Everybody will have different suggestions of course. I got a new Inspirion One all-in-one by Dell back in January, and I've been very satisfied with it. It handles all my photo editing and a whole lot more. There are several price points you can choose from.

As far as photography work the MAC is the way to go. I know a pro photographer in my local area and that is what he is even using. I have also talked to 2 other photographers in WI and MN and they too are using MACs. Hope this helps.

Why not just but more memory cards and save the editing until you get home to a less expensive computer?

I use a dell but would use a mac if the budget stretched that far, the one to use is the one you can afford with a back up.

The best computer is the one that you feel comfortable with and can afford. Despite the ravings of the Mac fan club there really is not a big difference between the Mac and PC. The primary advantage to PC is that you can usually find somebody local to fix or upgrade it. With the Mac you have to send it back to Apple.

Microsoft has a free service called Skydrive and Google has Google drive. Both are an excellent way to store your photos or any other work you have. They can be accessed from any computer anywhere and the "free" part works very well. When you get home just download to a storage drive and problem solved.

Thanks all for giving me 'food for thought'. I haven't lost anythin thank goodness and it can all be transferred. I'm looking at an Acer laptop here with price tag of just over $1000. which includes having the info from the old computer transferred to the new one. So I'm sitting here chewing on wether to go ahead or wait till getting home.

Okay, have you ever used CCleaner? This is a free program that will clear up a lot of issues on XP. You can get it here...http://www.piriform.com/promo/ccleaner-160512?gclid=CKSi277XybICFQoFnQodgGkAUA

Do you think you can download the free version of this program? If you can and you run it you may buy yourself some time. I am looking for a new computer also. I have a 3 year old Dell that is working fine but it is Vista and some of my recent software purchases will not run on it. So I understand your frustration. My sister-in-law just spent $2600 on a mac. In my opinion that is just too much money to spend on a computer. I am looking at a HP at Costco for around $700.

Let me know if you can get the program on to your computer.

From what I understand, it is full. About the best I can do is access the Internet, there is no room to add anything else.
