Never underestimate the power of using emotional fear mongering and controversy to sell advertising, cultural affiliation, religious affiliation, racial identification, nationalism, or any other -ism. Anything that raises cortisol levels makes for great television viewership. Never underestimate how often your thoughts are being manipulated by institutions of all types for their financial gain.
The first rule of sales is to create a harm, a problem to solve, an enemy to defeat, a "team" to join, or a challenge to be overcome. Never mind whether it is real or not, significant or not, true or false. If it is believable, it can be a money maker.
