Tell me more. I have Adobe Elements Premier but I have never used it. Can you give me a list of instructions or the link to a You Tube or something to go on? I looked around the menus and didn't see anything I thought would help. Thanks, Bob

I am a PC user but I do have Quicktime installed. I opened the movie in Quicktime and I don't see anyplace to do the rotation. Can I get the rest of the story? Thanks, Bob

P.S. I tried the FFMPEG mentioned by Dr. Db but it's too geeky for me to understand. I also have Adobe Premier Elements but can't figure out how to rotate in that program either (I sent an inquiry to Adobe but won't hold my breath). Looks like I might be SOL.

That's what I was afraid of. If I recall, I think I did it as an experiment. Now I know not to shoot upright. Thanks, Bob

Apparently I held my camera in the portrait mode while shooting a movie with my Nikon D5200. Therefore it is playing back with the action laying on its side. I don't see anyplace to rotate it like a photo. Any suggestions ? Thanks, Bob

I made a slight change in my metadata preset thinking that it would be quite simple to update every photo in my catalogue with the new one. To my horror, it looks like each photo will have to be brought up one at a time, changed, and then saved. I tried everything I can think of including selecting all the photos within a folder and then making the change, but no luck. I also found a Sync Metadata button but that didn't work. There must be a way to set all my photos to the new metadata preset. HELP!

Lightroom 5 is the bomb! And it works seamlessly with PS Elements. I just got the program and the more I learn about it the more I love it. Enjoy!

Okay. Thanks to your advice, I will go with Lightroom 5 instead of Nikon Capture DX2. It turns out that the program is being discontinued (replaced) but for some reason (probably a warehouse full of reasons) they are continuing to sell the product. I have decided that it would be best for Nikon to stick to "knitting" (cameras & lenses) and leave the software business for experts in that field.

So, I have been doing the tutorials in Lightroom 5 and I just need to double-check my understanding before I start importing files.

I have just recently become aware of the merits of "NEF" or "RAW" and I will be using this format on my DSLR going forward. Unfortunately all of my existing photos are in JPEG from my DSLR, P&S and Bridge cameras (all Nikons).

My understanding is that I can "copy as DSN" from my hard drive and all of the NEF's will come in as DSN and all the JPG's will come in as JPEG's.

It is my further understanding that the original JPEG's/NEF's will remain untouched in the original folders on my hard drive. DSN's can be greatly enhanced but JPEG's can only be enhanced on a limited basis. The changes to both types of files will be stored in a Lightroom "collection" and can then be exported as newly generated JPEG's, either to my hard drive (in another location), burned to a CD, printed or emailed.

I just wanted to run my understanding past the knowledgeable people at UHH in case my understanding is flawed.

Thanks for your patience and help, Bob

Have any of you used both of these programs? If so, which do you prefer? RAW & JPG comments also welcome in conjunction with their handling in these programs. I am torn and need guidance. Thanks, Bob

I have just purchased this program and I am trying to learn it. There are plenty of tutorials online which is good, but sometimes you just have a question and there's no one to ask. Since I have just joined UHH I will try my luck here.

Situation: I watched one tutorial and it spent a lot of time on the topic of converting proprietary raw files to DNG (Digital Negative). I shoot Nikon so we are talking NEF files. I spent a lot of time with this and I am still scratching my head.
Question: Is it really necessary to convert my NEF's to DNG's? Since Lightroom 5 is a "non-destructive" program that works with metadata only, why not just work from the NEF's?

I know what you mean. I have a Nikon D5200 DSLR (local shoots), a Nikon Cool Pix P520 (bridge camera for cruises and trips), and a Nikon Cool Pix S9500 (P&S for dinners, parties, etc.). It's no fun lugging your large bag through airport security and customs. You would be surprised at the quality of my bridge camera shots from Europe. Hope this helps. Thanks, Bob

P.S. Yes, I happen to love Nikon, but the principle is the same no matter what your favorite brand is.

My name is Bob Bennett and I live in Mesa, Arizona. A friend of mine recommended this group and I just signed up. Since my retirement in January, 2013, I have been able to really start digging into my own special interests which include photography. I am a devoted Nikon junkie, Windows user, and big fan of all electronic toys, both useful and useless. My current struggles are with post-shoot processing. I have dabbled in Photo Shop Elements and I am now deep into experimentation with Lightroom. I am looking forward to learning as much as I can from the group. I have developed a manic thirst for knowledge and a distinct fear that I may run out of time before I run out of things I want to learn. Thanks, Bob Bennett
