I have lugged my Canon 5-D-11 around Europe twice now and not sure its going to happen a third time.
I am considering buying something lighter and more compact such as an Olympus OMD-E-1 or equivalent mirrorless, or bridge camera.I'm aiming for potentially near SLR quality images.
Has anyone got any suggestions? If so, please give what you think are the best features/reasons of the camera you recommend.
Last trip, Hogs were very helpful enabling my wife to choose a new compact.
Ok, so thanks in advance to anyone who has any ideas.

The em1 is great, if you want something even lighter the new em10 is supposed to be awesome too. I highly recommend the 12-40 and 75 to go with the body. Those and the em1 are my everyday kit.

You are going to get a more portable kit, but not without tradeoffs - those being more noise, loss of quality on large prints, and a backache from not having to carry all that equipment.

Have a look at Scott Rickenberger's site to see what he can do with an OM-D E-M5 camera. http://www.scottrinck.com/

Most of his stuff is B&W but he gets to places none of us of a certain age would be capable of getting to. I really do like his "eye" for a picture. I don't think you can fault the quality either. It's made me seriously think about a camera change.

Compared to the 5d mkii? Noise perhaps if you don't expose your image correctly, but just about any camera will have that. Printing native files at 24x36 is no problem. Larger than that, 30x40 is doable, but you can't crop any of your image.

I'd be happy to send you a few unedited raw files for you to test.

What type of photography do you do? If you are a birder or heavy into sports, you might want to stick with canon or nikon.

Hi Dave, I dumped my DSLR almost 3 years ago for the same reason and went for an Olympus E-PL1 M4/3 camera. I have never regretted that decision and when I see photographers lugging their huge DSLR's around it makes me feel even better.
I have just upgraded to a E-PL5 which is even smaller any easily fits in my Belstaff fleece pocket.
Other have recommended the OM-5 camera which is slightly larger and has an excellent image quality and looks good as well, this could be the camera you should go with.
Cheers, John.

Another option is to get a long zoom bridge camera when you need to reach out, and a large sensor compact for best images. The combined weight is still well under that full frame DSLR with kit lens.

The Olympus EM-1 is absolutely terrific. It gives you everything you could want, and it's very portable. The best thing about it is that it is mature, and has great lenses. As a system, it is very hard to beat. It produces terrific images and is very high quality. I would highly recommend it.

A bridge camera may be the most versatile option available but it won't give you near DSLR IQ.

Now the EM1 with a 12-40 f/2.8 is an excellent suggestion.

If you need a reason(excuse) to buy the OMD-E-1, this is a weak one. It is not like you are lugging a 50 lb pack through Borneo. A 5d mk11 with a 70-200 f2.8 weighs under 6 lbs.

I am pushing 70 and routinely go over hill and dale with a 7d, 70-200, 60 macro and tubes, tripod and my lunch.

I guess when I hit 80 I may leave the macro home but certainly not my lunch!!

Perhaps this will help you "old guys" out...
:) :-)

It's not always about the weight, but the excess bulk that a traditional dslr (and lenses) brings. It's the difference between being able to use a smaller easier to mange bag and a much, much larger one. As a former marine, packing sensibly and light makes sense. Your walker image while funny, probably doesn't apply to the OP.

I realize that it isn't always about weight and bulkiness is a factor, I guess it depends on your level of fitness and where you are planning to shoot. I personally like the heftiness of a traditional dslr. I avoid cities and prefer the bush. Sometimes touring through Europe you are on a time schedule (if its Tuesday, it must be Belgium) and that can wear you down, however there is always a bistro and a drink available. In the bush you can certainly go at your own speed, excepting the not too frequent thing bigger and nastier than you which speeds you up dramatically!

5d2 24-70
EM1 12-40
I know which one I'd carry with me everywhere...the one in my signature. It's not the lightest combo out there...it still has some heft to it...just no bulk.
