Welcome 3LabMom. Had a black lab once, one GREAT dog. This forum has many knowledgeable and helpful members. My time is a little limited also but to learn the craft you have to put in the time. This forum is a great place to start.

Welcome to UHH sunnysky. You might want to consider the Nikon D7100. Not much more than the D7000 and it a great camera. Purchased mine in March of this year right after they came out. The body ONLY is selling now for $1,149.00, came down $50.00 since March.

I also have the D7100 and yes the shutter does not make as much noise. I believe there is also a "quiet" mode on the camera that reduces noise even more. Check to see if you have that mode on.
