The Canon crowds have been in denial about Nikon products for a few years now, starting with the D90 and continuing through today. Mostly sensor envy.

Come on folks, let's not have yet ANOTHER Canon vs Nikon pissing contest. There are sites out there that do that using technical data and not just personal bias.

Even as you look at the strengths and weaknesses, a weakness in one may be a feature you would never use. The same with lens'.

:) I won't be using either camera

This may not be either cameras fault but the one pulling the trigger.

Geeze, who cares.... They're both terrible pictures...

I have to agree that neither picture is very clear and there is no EXIF info to tell which is which. I sure hope it is the photographer's shaky hands or bad choice in settings or neither camera works very well in the chosen setting.

Thank you for this information! I really, really like his tutorials. Short and to the point of very useful information on LR. I have only watched 1-3 so far, but have learned way more than I knew before I watched them.
Plan to warch more later on. Want to practice what I just learned.

What is really good is him helping to define workflow. As you continue to watch more and more he repeats the earlier lessons till the basic develop module becomes almost automatic or at least until you know what slider to tweak and WHY. Then you progress to further refinements to smaller sections using radial filter, spot removal, graduated filter, etc.

In some of the later critiques rather than just say the photo is dark or light, etc. he will tweak a slider or two to show the result. If you shooting in raw you will be amazed at what data is saved that can be brought back. As good as LR or PS is no PP can make a a blurry picture unblurry.

Enjoy!!!!

I have just updated to PSE12 from PSE10. What books
would anyone recommend for PSE12 having used PSE10 for a few years?

Before you go out and buy a book go to youtube and look up Anthony Morghanti and elements 12. After watching the set of free videos then decide if you still need a book.

I bought Lightroom 5 and a nice fat book that some said was good. It was about the size of War and Peace and was horrendously detailed. It was more of a reference book after you had your PHd but rather useless as a learning tool.

I watched all of Moragnti's LR videos(they are a numbered set broken down in to 10 to 20 minute segments on a specific feature). It was having a personal tutor in your home. You can also check out his web page http://anthonymorganti.com/ and check out his free photo critiques along with Photoshop videos. I get no kickbacks; simply want to pass on a great asset.

I took a shot the other day at 1/6 second @ 70mm (140mm equiv), so I busted that theory.

I notice you did not include a picture of the Busted theory.

Interesting reading. And, like so many opinion questions, there are decent arguments on both sides. But one thing that I am noticing is that, based on your comments, we have more folks here interested in shooting the best quality images that they can, and that they'll spend money to do it. Almost sounds like we have "pros" or at least "pro-wanna-bes" here. Not too many are ready or willing to give up their quest for perfection in liu of taking lessor gear. Is UHH a haven for gearheads? Gotta say that it might just be. Or at least appears to be perhaps at least a little bit more than other photo forums. This is certainly not a bad thing. Just interesting to see this emerge from your responses to the original question.
Thanks to all for responding. And, there is no wrong answer. You all pass with an "A" for participating. Thanks.

I played with light, shadows and clarity in PSE 11.

If the picture had been shot in Raw there would have been a lot more data to tease out the details. Here is a Lightroom video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcnBebmvcgM which in effect takes a blah picture and brings out the details. LR is simply using the data that is stored in the raw file.

Don't get preoccupied with the LR features and all the moves but rather enjoy the flexibility. For those of you that have LR and want to understand the features there are many videos 10-20 minutes long on each of the features. Yes, they are all free. The video is from youtube but his web site is http://anthonymorganti.com/ has the links to the videos and 50+ critiques of peoples pictures. I actually a few done. I get no kickbacks and in fact I not sure how he generates income.

Enjoy or ignore.

I think you are missing the point of my response, it's about portability of a small camera vs a LARGE heavy DSLR. Small cameras will in fact advance enough in image quality that most average users will find BIG cameras unnecessary and too cumberome to carry with you at all times. :)

If weight and getting an ok shot is your goal then a P&S is what you want. Some of us prefer the big boy with high quality lens to get a high quality shot.

You know this is really not an either or situation. I have both a P&S and a big DSLR and depending on where I plan to takes pictures determines what camera I bring.

If and when I can't lug the big boy around, there is no way I'm giving up the quality for a P&S.

It looks fantastic
:-P Thanks. I'm beginning to think full manual is a Meth.

Let me ask something. from anyone.

If I have my camera on full manual why dont the metering system "grey out"
If the camera is still metering it is not! under my control.

By "full manual" you are setting ISO, aperture and shutter and possibly white balance, right? What do you mean by metering "grey out?"

8-) I'm standing around in the dark and I want a picture of this Narly looking tree .
But the flash is itty bitty :-o

Don't know what Camera but tipod, ISO 100, Aperture priority(unless you are a manual buff), say F7-f11 ish, built in timer or remote and trust the camera. You shot at 1/60..way to fast and probably hand held? For shots like this Raw is best but only if you have a post process tool.

Anywho I dropped it into light room and played just a little. Just so much one do with jpg. I took a shot in the dark as to what the original scene looked like. I'm simply having fun.

Though it might sound atequated, I put the majority of my picts on DVD disk as well as an external hard drive. Cd's do not have enough space, but you can put hundreds of picts on a DVD.

I tried the DVD route some time back. Just fine when you shooting and saving small JPEGs. One I started shooting and saving in Raw format and or large JPGs and full frame, DVDs were no longer viable. I currently have a pair of WD 2 Terabyte externals.

But it wasn't your answer was it?. You just cut and pasted some other person's work and presented it as your own, under your name.

You having a bad hair day? Yes his answer went above a beyond what was asked but I appreciated the detailed response. As for your crack about plagiarism, you're way off base. Many people cut and paste solid data from other sources and probably not with credit. It does not mean they are trying to take credit. Last I checked this isn't a High School Term paper where Ibid's and Op Cits are required.

Cloud storage is the easiest most reliable and you do not have to do anything except get an account with google, amazon, maybe Flickr offers them, Adobe, etc.

Very easy. When you want to save your pictures you just right click and hit "Save As" and the space which comes up you type in the name of your cloud account, i.e. www.adobe.com/cloud/pab20 (imaginary name, grin) and you then can access that account at any time and work with any of your images. Just make believe it is another external drive.

Only kickback to the cloud is your dependence on internet. While probably not a problem I feel more comfortable with a pair of ND 2 Terabyte externals. I often drag my laptop to someones home or nursing home to do a show and tell. The device is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I also vacation in places where there is no internet. I can download, PP, without any internet dependence.

As others have said, white balance.

If you are using windows down load Live Photo Gallery if its not already installed. Excellent free editor that will give all the adjustment you want and its easy to use.

LPG is ok and I used it for some time. For a free tool it's not bad. I won't say it gives all the adjustments you nees. :) I broke down and bought Lightroom and shoot almost everything in raw. Best $140 investment I ever made. Has some nice controls to dial in any Kelvin number along with many other sliders to control the entire photo down to specific spot or area.

While the 1.8 will allow you get the shot without a flash and not have to crank up the ISO much or at all, you get to suffer with whatever light is in the room and when you have a mix of sources, often a crap shoot and off to post processing.
