Self defence is not a legal reason to own a firearm in Australia. Hunting and sport shooting are. Your firearm will be registered, you will join a shooters club and undergo a safety indoctrination. Helps to keep the accidents down.

Tradergeorge, I only use UHH as a place to observe the "Conservative American Bull Fruit Bat" in flight. I take the odd potshot but they are a protected species on this site.
But seriously I'm trying to understand what happened to my country.
My wife keeps track of her family in the US on facebook. She posted a pic of our fridge with shot of Mr. Obama body surfing next to a shot of Kelly Slater in a big tube. My brother in law went into meltdown and won't speak to us till a Republican is in the white house. That's when I knew something was very wrong in the US.
He wants us stripped of our right to vote because we don't live in the US. This from a man who was a conscientious objector to the draft, about me, a draftee, who didn't get out of going to Viet Nam. He's now an enthusiastic advocate of sending others to war. So yeah, things have changed.
