Thanks group. I happened to have a 120gb ssd laying around. I was going to use it in another computer (a old one) but the reason I was going to use it for changed. So now I'll use it as a scratch disk.

...good size for that function since everything in there, at least for me, are jpegs!

Generally, the quoted life for SSDs (and NAND flash) is predicated on the # of write (and erase) operations, and with modern wear-leveling, that # is in the many tens to hundreds of Petabytes, so the predicted life (other than catastrophic failures) depends on how heavily they're used. The final answer for security is a back up to an off-site location. I use the Amazon cloud, but that usually turns into a cloud discussion, which has been he-hashed many, many times on the forum. In the end, the SSD vs HD and the cloud vs "I don't trust the cloud" discussion is like a Canon vs Nikon discussion - everyone believes what they believe, usually based on anecdotal information, and there's never a resolution. Ultimately, the industry trend toward SSD/flash storage and outsourcing IT functions to the cloud, especially storage, will determine future products and availability/cost.

...well, what you're stating is true (anecdotally...hehehe) and, yes, backup is important (and I'm backed-up in addition to my speed penchant) but the discussion is about SSD's, right?

DavidK2020...interesting. Where do you get your ratings on your SSDs? I'm using SSDLife Pro, and according to their metrics none of my SSD's wear out until 2025 or better. I've had *several* spinners go belly-up and zero SSD's (4 years of practical usage so far)...not to say it can't happen here ($5 to Zappa) but I'm happy as a clam so far.

...that's where i had my D70s done, too...so, maybe just looking for options, their work was/is solid!

...I've had a D70s converted to IR (infrared) for a few years and it's always fun and interesting when I get going on it. Anybody had one done recently? I'm thinking on getting a D300 converted (since I'll have a D500 to be the main DX dog soon) and would like some recommendations on companies that do that kind of work...

...my particular setup includes a Macbook Pro and two PCs. The laptop is really my "main" machine, but the other two are maxed-out in another room, one set up for pix and the other for music archiving...I spend a lot of time in that room. All three machines run on a 1TB SSD, in the case of the pix machines, it's very helpful to store my LR catalogues and "working" photos there, because, again in all three instances, I have 500 GB "scratch" SSDs running...these to write to when saving out of LR or PS (or, in the case of my Music machine, Adobe Audition). These machines *smoke.* I may take 10K shots in a day, so you might say I'm a power user, speed has been a long-term project and very helpful when processing so many shots...but I've gotten used to it and it's super helpful in all aspects of computing. So, to boil it down, the scratch drive method (writing from one SSD to another internal SSD) is the fastest way I've come across to process photos. OH, my Macbook Pro (vintage 2011) used to have an optical drive...I used that slot for the second SSD, a common thing to do as there is add-on hardware available expressly for that purpose. With all the options out there, I have absolutely no need for an internal optical drive and that second SSD is crucial to my workflow...sorry this got a little long...

I have some Fuji cards which my computer can only read when the cards are locked to read only. I believe when the card is formatted in the camera the actual operating system is somewhat different to that put on when formatting in the computer which may cause some problems. Try formatting in the camera and then setting to read only before trying to download into the computer

"read only" negates the "write" factor...I had a card (SD) go bad when it simply *became* "read only" with no help from me! Couldn't get the thing changed...Sandisc changed it out for me...

I've taken several pictures (RAW-NEF) with my D750. In trying to bring them into the computer, I get a message telling me I need to format the card. I formatted the card previously. What's going on?

I've had a few issues with large SD cards and usually end up reformatting to Ex-Fat...I deal with Mac and Windows so the bridge *is* the Ex-Fat format (the cards themselves are formatted in Ex-Fat out of the factory is my understanding). I would tether the camera to the computer and get the data off the card first and foremost, then breathe easier and start messing with the card. Sounds like we use the same workflow getting data into the 'puter, right down to the card reader...however, lately I've changed brands and am now using a Transcend USB3 reader with no probs. That said, the issue seems to be that particular card and I've had 'em go bad, too (even Lexar). I'm not an "expert" that is for sure, but if you get your data off via the tether you can at least go forward...

Chas, I've got and use, on occasion, 2 Bronicas.
Bronica C
Bronica SQ-AM

A good source for manuals is:

http://www.butkus.org/

The U.S. distributor is/was

http://www.tamron-usa.com

Some of the models have interchangeable viewing/focusing screens. Some do not. A split focusing screen may help.

Thanks Bob...really appreciate the resources!

Good luck with your '58 Olds!

Hahaha...no sh*t, huh!? My family had a '57 and I thought that thing was beautiful...then they did the '58! Even at the time (and my boy crowd was really into model cars, thus much crosstalk on the subject) I thought it was the ugliest thing *ever*...but I kinda like the camera! :D

Interesting thread on screens here:

Evidently there has been problems getting correct focus due to focusing screen errors.

...well, after a day of googling and this and that I ended-up buying a new screen/microprism from Rick Oleson...he sent me a few tests before I bought and after completion I was confident he knew his stuff and I was on the right track...trigger pulled. Fingers crossed. Smile on me face.

I think you can get a microprism or a split-image range finder focusing screen for Bronicas. Which mode Bronica do you have, Charlie?

S2A...it says "Zenza Bronica" and looks like a '58 Olds...hahaha, and weighs like it, too! I'm googling right now! Thanks man...I love this group!

With the waist level, you obviously hold it down to your waist. With the mag popped up, you can cradle the camera in your hand, and work the focus lever with the other hand.

I have a 5X mag (not eye level, as I reported); you hold it up to your head, eyecup on your preferred eye, and you have a better view of the focusing screen.

Alan

...5x mag...now we're talkin'! Thanks Alan...

Hooray for you and welcome to film.

I have been shooting with a Mamiya RB67 for about 20 years.
I am a film fanatic.
The most important thing that I learned that long ago was one word
TRIPOD
As for the fine focus I use 300 power reading glasses and the flip up magnifier.
As you learn to use this camera you will be astounded by what you can do with B&W film.

...yes, Henry, this journey is becoming...er...fun! Hahaha, tripod, yes...and your recommendation of the readers is good, so thanks cuz that's what I'm looking for!
