I'm somewhat "old school" and have resisted the temptation to tweak photos once they've been taken. Oh, I had a darkroom back in the medieval era, and really like developing and printing (mostly B&W), but I've stayed away from software to enhance the pictures I've taken.

So, here I have a picture I took recently in Iceland. It was a fairly bleak day, but the sun was trying to peak through. The subject is the up-river waterfall (Selfoss) from the powerful Dettifoss.

The first picture is how it looked originally, the second is after a bit of minor tweaking (saturation, mostly) in iPhoto.

While I like the overall look of the second better, I notice that some of the clarity in the sunlight and rock detail is washed away.

"Darwin's Waiting Room" is a joke. Virginia isn't.

I would have waited a bit as you already have the 35 mm built in the 18-140mmm just set that on 23 mm and you got your 34 mm or set it on24 mm
and you got your 36 mm . and you don't have to Chang lenses . at least you will know if you just have to get a prime 35mm , me I sold mine . I have it in two of my lenses allready , never miss it . bought a 10-20mm sigma instead

The problem I have with doing as you suggest is that the 18-140mm is a slow lens, with only a maximum aperture of f/3.5. I like to do a lot of dawn/dusk shooting, and a faster lens like the f/1.8 is better suited for that.

So here's another wrinkle: My local camera store has a web site. It's pretty easy to shop there to get an idea of what's in stock and what their prices are (they ship, too).

The down side: They don't seem to keep it up to date, and emails to their "contact us" link seem to disappear into the ether.

Being a tech geek, I'm tempted to go offer a barter: I'll update your web site if you'll discount my photo gear. What say? :)

I work part-time at a locally owned running store, and like to support other local, independent businesses. I was delighted to learn that there was a photography business close to my home, and that's where I bought my latest camera.

Their return policy is a little off-putting, but it tends to make me more sure of my purchase (less impulse buying).

I like the knowledge and the ability to question, try, and add-on (I probably wouldn't have bought UV filters for my lenses when shopping online).

That said, I do shop online, and would say my split is about 70%-30% local-to-online.

Your pictures are nice, but oh are you going to love your new D7100. My suggestion for learning is not the manual that comes with the camera, but purchase either the Dummies Guide to the D7100 or Bryan Peterson's Exposure, Aperture and Shutter books. That should be enough for an old semi-pro to get up-to-date and converted to digital. Much is the same as with a film SLR, just a few things to remind yourself. LOL No. one tip: experiment and shoot, shoot, shoot. Welcome to the group.

Hi srfotog, thanks for the welcome! Funny you should recommend the Dummies book, because a copy is sitting front of me as I type! I went to the library just browsing, and there it was - snatched it up in an instant!

Thanks!

Let's say you have a D7100 and you could only take one lens with you. You might be shooting bee's to butterflies or flying eagles to mountain tops. What would be your one lens. DX or FX? 85mm fixed or 18-300 zoom. Weight not being a factor what would be your all around lens?

I just purchased a D7100 with two kit lenses: AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR and AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. No sooner had I brought them home and played with them a little bit, I went and ordered an AF-S 35mm f/1.8G, which I think is going to be my "one" lens.

My reason? My principal interest is in landscape photography, with a little bit of portraiture thrown in. This is a fairly "standard" (35mm equivalent) lens, and is nice and quick at f/1.8. Besides, the price (US$197) can't be argued!

I agree that you probably can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon, but more importantly, you should get a little closer to what you want to DO with the camera.

When I was in front of the (very knowledgeable) lady behind the counter at the camera store, I asked much the same question.

I chose the Nikon because of what I wanted to photograph; I'm more into the still photography. If I wanted video, I think I would have gone Canon.

Snapsort calls the D7100 vs. EOS 70D a tie, giving a very (very!) slight edge to the Nikon.

Good luck with your pursuit!

Greetings, I'll try to keep this short.

I learned of UHH from a lady I met recently on a trip to Iceland. She had a nice camera; mine was "less nice." Last week, I purchased a Nikon D7100, signed up for a course to learn more about digital photography, and am now studying like crazy.

Back in my college days, I was a semi-professional photographer, having aced my photojournalism courses. That was then, this is now.

Everything I know about photography goes back to 35mm film, ASA, TTL-metering, and darkroom processing. My knowledge of digital photography is sorely lacking, and my frustration with it has caused me to make some poor purchasing decisions. My hope is the D7100 will last me for a while and become my new "best friend."

Here are some photos I took with my now "retired" camera, a Nikon 1 J1, purchased with two kit lenses, a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 and a 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6.

I looking forward to learning and sharing.
