I wouldn't mind getting to Mars fast but sure wouldn't want to run into anything during the trip. Wonder how they'll deal with that problem?

Interesting Jerry,
I never would have thought of a USA brand would use a French term for batteries. Great site.
Thanks

Whenever I want to edit a msg. so I can forward part of the original, I always use FORWARD which means I'm now in charge of any and all content.

My Logitech M705 eats a pair every three or more years! I never turn it off.

To poster who uses rechargeables, the self-discharge of some NiCd or NiMH batteries will flatten them in a few months.

Thats my 'low life' experience with rechargeable batteries. Tried rechargeables from three different companies (all overseas) and none lasted even 5-10% as long as a regular Alcaline battery.

BTW, does anyone know what 'Pile Alcaline' means being marked on Duracell batteries? These non rechargeable and are made in the USA. Never had a problem with them. Buy them from Costco.

Since you have a Mac, that would be a good choice for your wife. Would she like to take over your machine, while you get a new one?

Boy, that plan went thru my head too.
I talked her into taking my old I phone 5S so I didn't want to stretch her trust by asking her to take my 3 year old Macbook pro.

I just found this.

Thanks Jerry,
It's apparent I have to learn more about Badger. I see it supports some browsers but not Safari, which I like. According to Badgers site they are working on adding Safari.

Changing browsers is a small price to pay to get out of seeing the same ads for years.

The reason you are seeing adverts is your cookies.
If I research an appliance or tripod, I get ads here on UHH for the same items I was looking at.
Once you step into the internet, you are tracked.

It's worse if your operating system tracks you.
I like windows 8.1 and feel I have privacy.

Loren, I have not found a file for cookies on this macbook. I used to be able to find it on my old Dell but Apples location for cookies is lost to me.
If I understand you correctly, if I delete the cookies, then I should remain free of that cookies advertisements. True? or do they come back to my computer from the cloud?

One last question, is there a browser site like Duck Duck Go which prevents this type of advertising overload?
Thanks

I did clear out the history file (everything) but unfortunately, the ads continue.

I am using a Macbook pro running the latest OS X EL Capitan 10.11.3 and my wife is using an 'old' Dell running Vista.
Her computer is on it last legs so we want to buy a replacement. Based on what I've read on UHH I have this picture in my mind that Windows 10 is looking over my wifes shoulder and documenting everything she looks at, (not that anyone else cares about garage sales, thrift stores, etc.)
I am therefore (almost) discounting buying anything running windows 10 and getting her a Mac which as far as I know doesn't track me as extensively as Win 10.
The problem, if I can explain my experience with the Mac, is that when I buy an item on the computer it then produces an advert of that product FOREVER on almost any page I visit. Specifically, I bought a Harry razor and hated it. 4 blades big which wouldn't fit under my nose to shave my upper lip so it was trashed a couple of weeks after buying it. I regretted buying it ever since, BUT every day I see an advert on my Mac for that razor.
I expect that windows 10 will give my wife the same experience with showing ads, etc.
Can anyone advise if there is a route I should follow when I buy her new computer, by selecting a brand or operating system that minimizes or hopefully eliminates advertising and tracking?

A growler? Now that's a term I have not heard for a while. In the antique world they were usually tin containers with a lid and a bail handle. A man would go to the bar and get it filled with beer to take home for the evening. Of course, they came in various sizes, depending on the amount of intoxication needed that evening. And the beer naturally got warm....unless you had an ice box.

Out here on the west coast (at least in Washington and Oregon) the growler is so commonplace because of all the craft beer makers. Here they are made of thick brown glass and are normally available in quart, 1/2 gallon and gallon sizes.
Notice I purposely left out California as when you get 100 miles south of the state line all of the confusing rules, regulations and general confusion starts.

Not a Coors fan - it does not taste good to me - but most beers are that way. I prefer a pint from a local pub over mass produced beer...

Years and years and years ago when Coors needed to be kept refrigerated, it was not pasteurized. Then, it was a GREAT beer.
Pasteurization killed the goodness. Now, it's all swill and thats why many of us stopped drinking coors.

This message from a un-savvy computer user... After taking a gazillion photos (once I moved to digital) I have my photos from computer, ipads, digital camera, & whatever stored on different digital hard drives, extra memory cards, discs, & various filled up clouds. My question is there a program or something where I can dump all these files into one place. .

I never cease to be amazed at the helpful comments on UHH given to people who are having problems with their photography. I am experiencing the same problems that Loretta
describes but was never able to think of a way to ask for help.
I now have a better understanding of options available to solve the problem she describes. Thanks everyone.

Neat idea, You could do the same thing with a Strawberry pot.
My late Wife gardened on our deck in tubs made from plastic barrels. in a 100 sq.ft chicken wire cage to keep the Tree Rats out And grew more than we could use.

Love the idea about how you grow Onions BUT 'What the heck are tree rats' Do they have a big problem with them in MO?

Kewl!!! Now if I get one the key word here is if will you come operate the hand pump for me? my well is only 305 ft deep we hit good water at 285 ft. I opted to go another 20 ft..
J/K.
Due to pipe stabilizers and depth this is probably not a good idea as the original pump would have to be pulled to allow for alignment of the stabilizers so the hand pump to pass them.
Not a cheap job last time the pump was replaced it cost me more than having the well drilled 30 yrs ago.

I'm very confused by the video showing PVC pipe being used in the well. You can use it but no reputable store here in Oregon will recommend it as it breaks too easily. Here we install a black pipe, slightly flexible and normally 1 1/2" in I.D.

Secondly, I have two houses with both wells being over 300 feet deep. In both cases the static water level is around 27 feet below ground. One well produces 11 gal. P/min. and the other is at 7 gal. P/min. Therefore, to use water in an emergency you only need to hand pump water from about a maximum of 40 to 50 feet, not hundreds of feet below ground level. This is very easy and almost anyone can do it. I did it as a 7-15 year old before we installed an electric pump in the well.
Many, many years ago.
