computer programs which track your surfing habits

I am using a Macbook pro running the latest OS X EL Capitan 10.11.3 and my wife is using an 'old' Dell running Vista.
Her computer is on it last legs so we want to buy a replacement. Based on what I've read on UHH I have this picture in my mind that Windows 10 is looking over my wifes shoulder and documenting everything she looks at, (not that anyone else cares about garage sales, thrift stores, etc.)
I am therefore (almost) discounting buying anything running windows 10 and getting her a Mac which as far as I know doesn't track me as extensively as Win 10.
The problem, if I can explain my experience with the Mac, is that when I buy an item on the computer it then produces an advert of that product FOREVER on almost any page I visit. Specifically, I bought a Harry razor and hated it. 4 blades big which wouldn't fit under my nose to shave my upper lip so it was trashed a couple of weeks after buying it. I regretted buying it ever since, BUT every day I see an advert on my Mac for that razor.
I expect that windows 10 will give my wife the same experience with showing ads, etc.
Can anyone advise if there is a route I should follow when I buy her new computer, by selecting a brand or operating system that minimizes or hopefully eliminates advertising and tracking?

Have you tried to clear your web browser's history?
Yes, Harry's is horrible.

The reason you are seeing adverts is your cookies.
If I research an appliance or tripod, I get ads here on UHH for the same items I was looking at.
Once you step into the internet, you are tracked.

It's worse if your operating system tracks you.
I like windows 8.1 and feel I have privacy.

I agree clear out your cache, but it isn't the platfo m, it is Google. Drives me nuts too, if you do any research before buying a gift the freaking ads are constant negating any surprise.

I have started using the private mode on the browser but that still doesn't stop the ads!

I did clear out the history file (everything) but unfortunately, the ads continue.

Loren, I have not found a file for cookies on this macbook. I used to be able to find it on my old Dell but Apples location for cookies is lost to me.
If I understand you correctly, if I delete the cookies, then I should remain free of that cookies advertisements. True? or do they come back to my computer from the cloud?

One last question, is there a browser site like Duck Duck Go which prevents this type of advertising overload?
Thanks

There are lots of very effective ad blockers that keep those pop-ups away. One warning, though. Many sites use the pop-up feature to open other windows or show you forms to fill in, so you must temporarily disable the blocker.

Wind10 has ways to block lots of that tracking and spying. Google will provide lots of articles.

Since you have a Mac, that would be a good choice for your wife. Would she like to take over your machine, while you get a new one? :D

Thanks Jerry,
It's apparent I have to learn more about Badger. I see it supports some browsers but not Safari, which I like. According to Badgers site they are working on adding Safari.

Changing browsers is a small price to pay to get out of seeing the same ads for years.

Boy, that plan went thru my head too.
I talked her into taking my old I phone 5S so I didn't want to stretch her trust by asking her to take my 3 year old Macbook pro.

AdBlock Plus will work with FireFox, Internet Exploder, Google, etc. Cheap, and blocks ads, including any that try to show up for me, here on UHH.

Thanks SmittyOne and shelty,

Seeing as how Amazon lists Ad Trap for 129.00 it seems a little bit to high for my pocketbook. Hows that for an 'old' term?

AdBlock Plus, per SmittyOne, is very reasonable (free) so I'll try that first.

Thanks for making me pursue some alternates to just watching Ads, and watching ads, and ....etc.
Hate those Ads.
