The tigers at the LA Zoo got an early Halloween treat. It turned to many small pieces in seconds.

Are you looking for atmosphere smoke, haze, or low fog? All are produced by different machines. Dry ice immersed in hot water will create low fog, hazer machine will create even atmosphere smoke indoors, regular smoke machine will create bursts of smoke.
It’s a good time of year for relatively inexpensive standard smoke machines, check the local Halloween stores.
As for the pro versions, they can be pricey, check theater lighting rental houses, Chicago should have a few.
Google “dry ice fog machines”, “hazer machines”, “smoke machines”

I went to the Safari Park in Southern California and tried to shoot the “Cheetah Run”. The first thing is get there early to get a good spot with room to pan the course. They run the cheetah’s companion dog first. If it’s not too hot you will get 2 chances(about six seconds each), as they run both directions. Use your fastest lens with a fast shutter speed. I shot with a Nikon D7000 with a Sigma 150-500 at ISO 400. Most of my images are too blurred or half in the frame. Here are a few of the better ones.

The fox was not afraid of me at all. I was about 25 feet away taking shots and he sat down and took a nap.

I took my wife to a casino, when we arrived there was a firefighting helicopter support base next to the parking lot. They are fighting a fire in the mountains near Banning, California. There were three helicopters filling their water tanks and flying about a 7 to 10 minute round trip up the mountain and back over and over again.

This Kestrel Hawk was happily hunting in the field oblivious to the helicopters.

I went outside in the garden to play with my new flash. The flash is off camera mounted on a old tripod and triggered by my Nikon D7000 commander mode.

We use the same technology in the theater I work in. You start with VERY deep pockets nothing in this is cheap. You need multiple projectors over laid over the projection area (like a dress or an entire stage). The media is loaded into a media server and the projected area is pixel mapped so the media server has reference points. The media server is connected to a control console. The image is projected over the entire projection area, and then it can be masked, manipulated, warped, or layered to any area within the projection area. The options are limitless! During live performances every component is times two, 100% backup running simultaneously for seamless transitions if or when something lets the smoke out of a projector, media server, console, or the multitude of cables that tie it all together. It also helps to have a couple of skateboard toting technical geniuses on the payroll to make this all work (and keep working).
The Grammys used (24) projectors not counting the (6) on Carrie Underwood's dress (3) primary and (3) backup. Each projector has a list price between 80 and 120 thousand dollars. Then you have the installation labor, media, and hours of console programming time for a three minute song.

I work in a large theater in Los Angeles and we had a Opossum roaming around recently. We called the pest control company to set a trap. Meanwhile the prop shoppers found a nice Opossum pelt which combined with my RC car and a few WANTED posters spread around proved to be great fun on a dark stage during tech rehearsals.

Actually only one was on the walk, the other two were drive-by shootings.

I have the Vello grip on my D7000, the shutter button was intermittent, so I sent it back to B&H. They replaced it promptly and now it works great. I missed it while it was in for repair, it makes the camera more comfortable and secure to hold.
