I have followed this lens since it first came out many years ago. So I do know a little about this. But...I can not get a firm answer to my question. (Maybe I asked it wrongly) I really don't "Need" this lens, but at my age of 70, I did order it because "I want It"!!!

That said...here is my question: I have also ordered the "Dock" to customize the lens for "Back Focus" or "Front Focus issues" etc...etc. (IF Needed)
I totally understand these issues, and this lens is "Tunable or Customizable as needed".

I have read (And watched on YouTube) about "HOW FAR THE FOCUS TARGET" should be set from the lens/camera for these tests. Some say that the target should be set at 12 feet for all testing. (ie: Focus issues and custom settings)
And some say that the target should be at 2 times the "Minimum Focus Distance". And...some say to set the target at "40 times the focal length you are working on. (150mm, 200mm, 300mm, 600mm etc...etc) I have done this with with several other lens, but...

"IF YOU HAVE THIS LENS...AND USE IT...WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CAMERAS SENSOR LINE AND THE TARGET" when making these adjustment.
Is one (1) distance good for all "Focal Points"???

Thank you in advance to all who "Own This Lens"!!!

I hope you understand my question.

Thanks,
Boone.

Sigma offers a one-time AF calibration for your new lens. Just send your lens and camera to them and they will calibrate the AF at four focal lengths at no charge. You only pay to send the camera and lens. I did this when I purchased my sigma 70-200mm Sport lens. I tried using the dock to do it myself but I just gave up. Give them a call to see if it's available for your new lens.

Actually…I disagree a bit with billnikon…there ar differences but they’re minor. Grip vs not…a few menu options (auto capture and airplanes) tha5 differ but IMO a lot of that will converge…different battery life but IMO that’s not really a significant issue…and SD in the second slot which is not really a big deal unless you need both 20FPS and 2nd card backup vs overflow…weight…and tha5 about covers most of the differences. Whether any of those ar significant to you is another question. In my case…I have both and bought the Z9 because it was available first and is way better for wildlife action than my Z7II is…but I don’t care about the grip and would rather not have it as I rarely shoot portrait and the other differences are insignificant to my needs. Bought the Z8 as a second body…and less weight for when I want a walk around body was the key…and it’s cheaper to boot. If both had been available at Z9 launch…I would have gotten the Z8 instead because overall it fits my needs better…and I would swap my Z9 with an extra battery and tripod bracket straight up for another Z8 instead.

I would take you up on that swap if I hadn't owned a D6 before I got the Z8. I'm agree with you, I prefer the smaller footprint and weight difference of the Z8.

Check out the Canon TS9520 all-in-one. Max printing size is 11x17 and reasonably priced around $300. You might be able to pick it up for a lower price during Labor Day sales.

johnec is correct. Extended menu bank function in the Shooting Menu must be turned on.

I would try the two-button reset before sending if off. If that doesn't work, then try a Resetting all settings via the Setup Menu.

Are you still having problems with #1? If so, you may have done the same thing I did when I couldn't toggle through all the viewfinder/monitor displays. I forgot that I had assigned the DISP button to something other than Display and therefore I couldn't toggle the displays with the DISP button. Just verify that f2/f3 DISP button is assigned as DISP "Cycle info display".

Hi all - when using Nikon Group Area mode with the 4 small squares arranged in a square pattern, is the subject, like a bird head or eye, supposed to be in focus only when in one of the small squares, or anywhere within the larger square pattern area? Trying my hand at flying birds and had read that this Group Area is a good way to setup, along with continuous AF and shutter releases but not sure on this point. Any other suggestions are welcome too-Thanks!

Group Area Mode is a group of autofocus points acting as one big Single Point focus area. No individual AF point has priority over the others, the camera simply uses the entire group -
selecting and switching the AF point. Although it does prioritize the closest subject under the af area. Your subject should be in focus if you keep it anywhere in those boxes.

Reikan FoCal is a program for auto tuning your lens focusing system. It has a feature they call Snapshot that does what you are looking for. A Snapshot is a copy of all the available camera settings representing the current state of your camera, which you can then apply it to your camera if you lose any setting or you can export it to a file for printing.
