Hi. Two questions :
1. I’m unable to see the histogram in the viewfinder or the monitor despite going into settings a 17 and 18 and selecting display 3 which is supposed to show the histogram. When I select ‘set’ and okay and try the camera I am unable to see the histogram. Would be grateful for any help.
2. What settings do I need to change to have the viewfinder properly reflect the exposure depending upon change in shutter speed and F stop.
Thanks in advance.
1) toggle the DISP button
2) Custom Setting a8 -show effects of settings
Sorry I don’t understand. A8 is Limit AF- area selection and not ‘show effects of settings’
Also, nothing changes when I press the DISP button.
Very helpful thank you 😊👍🏽
Are you still having problems with #1? If so, you may have done the same thing I did when I couldn't toggle through all the viewfinder/monitor displays. I forgot that I had assigned the DISP button to something other than Display and therefore I couldn't toggle the displays with the DISP button. Just verify that f2/f3 DISP button is assigned as DISP "Cycle info display".
Yes thank you 😊. I had done exactly that …..

You may (just "may") find that when you switch your display to show the exposure effect that *then* the histogram will be available in the viewfinder.
I emphasized the "may" aspect cuz my Z6 is not your Z8, but my histogram is only available when the display is set to "show effect". Maybe that is a universal approach all across the Nikon line ... or maybe not. Check it out for your Z8.

I suspect the reason it works that way is that the histogram is actually
the tonal distribution of the viewfinder image. So, unless the viewing image represents what will
actually be recorded there would be no source of useful info for the histogram to graphically represent.
