Just simply beautiful. Cardinals are always very pretty birds and you captured this one very well.

As with most everything there's going to be differing opinions. But I do think in the case of the first image cropping out part of the dark foreground to bring attention to the Space Needle would be the way to go with it. That being said, I'm with the majority in thinking the second image is the better of the two.

I like the images but feel they all lack tonal range - which should be the joy of b&w. I’m sure you’ve chosen the ‘flat’ look on purpose but, for me, it doesn’t work.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Magnetoman. These first two were processed to bring out the textures of the metal and it does compress the gray scale, which was my goal here. In the case of the third, the processing enhanced the surface outlines of the structures. If you double download that image and look at the surface edges you'll see what I mean.

Rusty steelwork, perhaps layered or flaky is one of the few things that don't transfer to colour very well for me. I appreciate you did this on film but it's always been my experience that this subject suits colour better.

That said, I do like what you've done.

Thank you John for stopping by and commenting.

I found #1 just a touch busy, but the longer I looked the more I liked it.

I love #2. Fantastic.

I found #3 too confusing.

Glad you liked #2 Joe. #3 is a small self powered rail crane used for rail construction in its day I'm guessing, if that helps.

#1 has a great feast of shapes, shades, and textures.

I love the texture in the first two. I dont know what you did in the third one but I like the ghostly look.

Thank you Keni. The first two were processed after scanning to enhance the texture, and the third was processed by running it thru a B&W effect (even though it was a scan of a B&W negative) and combined under the Exceptional method to produce that sort of negative effect (with a bit of burning and dodging done to give that foggy effect.)

I like this very much. It sounds like a similar process to the one you used with the cat tails.

I apologize I told you wrong on the opacity. The color layer was at 40% opacity to allow the wood grain to show through.

Thanks Dave! Here is the original shot. I have two background layers, the first for texture (burled ash in black and white) and second for color with some curve adjustments and using the normal blend mode. My cattail photo is on top. I used Select Color Range to mask out the sky and used Pin Light as the blend mode. I chose the sky color then inverted it. I still had to do a little more clean up to the mask though. The blend mode is what allowed the background to come through the lighter parts of the cattails. Everything was at 100% opacity.
Thanks Dave! Here is the original shot. I have tw... (show quote)

Thanks, did you combine the two background layers or leave them as separate layers during the process?
