You did well. These are really nice shots. Too bad season is over for you. Any other sports starting up? Keep posting. Thanks and BE SAFE!

Tom

Not sure what's next for sports, ready to get outside and get some birding action. Might get to my friends dirt track racing a couple times. That's always a hoot.

Here are some shots from the last game I can get to for the
shortened covid season.

Shot with the same settings as last time D500 1/1000th
f2.8 on the Tamron G2 70-200mm
and iso was really pushed as it was darker so I tried
to not crop too much. I limited the camera to 6400 iso
and it was up against that most of the time.

Finally got a decent shot of the McFarland "kick" after and ace.
The bench players seem to do it the best.

Very nice shots skylark! The D500 @ 10 fps really catches the action. I rented one back when basketball started around here and I really liked it. Can't afford right now but thinking about selling some things and getting one. The price is not too bad either $1496.00 B & H. Please keep posting, would love to see more. Thanks BE SAFE!

It's awesome, really good for birds in flight also. I bought mine used for around 900 bucks. They
are very reasonable for what you get for performance. Went from a D7200 which is no slouch,
but the frame rate and faster focusing make it worth the upgrade.

Player number 10 really crushed it this game, lots of keepers of her.

Great work 67. My favorites are 1 2 and 3. Really well done. Put those three on a wall in a frame.

Thank you! Yes, really like those. Used the D500 and won't be going back to the
D750. The 10fps makes all the difference. I can only imagine what the
Sony at 20fps would do for volleyball, but that's 4500 bucks.

Nice shots. I do have to ask, though, is volleyball usually a spring sport in your area or has the Covid paranoia rearranged the seasons? In Texas, volleyball is a fall sport.

It's usually fall, but they postponed and shortened the season to be played now.
Covid was the reason for the postponement, glad they are finally playing.
Limited fans of course, but slowly they are letting more people in.

Still weird by wearing the masks but the eyes still
show the emotion! So nice to be able to shoot some
sports this spring.

Nikon D500 f2.8 1/800th Auto ISO 5000-6400 Raw.
AF continuous 9 point focus, BBF, 10fps.
Auto white balance.

Second attempt this year. Added more extension tubes and worked on nailing
the focus.

I was invited to shoot some downhill ski races this weekend
at the Devil's Head Ski Resort just north of Madison, WI.
The ages ranged from 7 to college age. It was a great
experience and I got some fun shots. I highly recommend!
Mostly shot as jpegs with the D500 and the Tamron 150-600mm
G2 lens, although I mixed in some D750 shots with the 70-200
for closer action. I tried f13 and 1/4000th to deal with the
snow and sun - auto iso landed in the 200-400 range. I purposely
shot a bit underexposed then did light adjustments in Lightroom.

I am looking to buy a new camera and lens to capture hummingbirds and birds in flight. Any ideas???

D500 and a Tamron G2 150-600mm. I think a used D500 can be had for 850 bucks right now and it's unbelievably good. For 1700ish bucks you would have an up to date wicked set up for hummingbirds in flight and all sorts of other tiny little birds.

Very good shots. Your setup on a crop camera is excellent. I don’t see any noise, and I really like your DOF

Nice framing. If I had any suggestions at all, it would be to rotate the last shot so the vertical lines are vertical, but that is just perhaps nit-picking.

David

Thanks, and you are correct - I'm going to go fix that right now!

Hi 67skylark27, the eyes have it. Wonderful work on your part. Looks like the gym has some decent lighting. Your shots are clear, white balance is spot on. All is good. How do you like the 500? Love mine.

Thanks Jules! Yes the gym is pretty good on lighting as at 1/500th I was still in the 2000 iso level. I also tried out the active d-lighting setting and bumped it up to high, I like the affect it had. I absolutely love the D500, it's gotta be the best bang for your buck camera out there - especially for sports and birds in flight. The extra fps really helped this go around with the basketball. I picked up a D850 recently but have not had the opportunity to shoot it much outside (-15 here today and overcast most days) looking forward to using that to it's abilities soon.

I was granted access again to the high school Girls Varsity basketball game.
I share all the pics so that always helps of course. I tried a different set up.
Tried the D500 with the Tamron G2 70-200 (vs the D750 last time). I also
threw the 1.4x tele on it and shot at f4. It worked great and let me shoot
really tight. ISO was higher but noise was not an issue. 1/500th was good enough too.
I shot jpegs on basic resolution, files were1.5mb or so. These are straight
from the camera with just basic exposure leveling and cropping. What fun!
The fourth one is my favorite.

Thank you! I shot another game last night and tried out the D500 with the tamron G2 70-200 f2.8 with and without the 1.4x teleconverter. Worked great! Now I won't feel bad when I sell the D750. I'll post them in a minute.
