No. It's my understanding that you can shoot people in public spaces as long as it is nothing that would invade a reasonable expectation of privacy. Can't sell for commercial use, i.e. advertising, but can sell as art. Am I wrong?

Just make sure your ABC company uses the same printer for different size prints or there may be a difference.

I'm new to DSLR (had a 35mm film Canon many years ago) and after a lot of research and some good input here I got the Canon EOS 80D, refurbished with 18-135 kit lens for about $1200 purchased direct from Canon (body alone $849). The question is what can't you do with what you have? I had a very good SONY point and shoot with 20MB, but wanted to be able to make "art" prints up to 16x20, so went to DSLR and 24MB with the larger sensor. Started with the 18-135 kit lens and just added a Tokina 14-20 f2.0 - wider for landscapes, and faster. Probably sharper, too. Still, this is not a full frame but the cost of FF and lenses that would take advantage of the FF would have blown my budget.

Some have said you could move up to the 80D. That's a modest upgrade for around $300 more than the 60D. But why bother? 24MP vs 18, more autofocus points (not sure what that really accomplishes - I tend not to use them so I have more control), newer sensor, tilting screen, and a few other plusses. Are any of those things worth it? Again, what can't you do that the 80D, or anything similar, would do?

Don't know about mirrorless, but I guess it's worth a look. If you want a real upgrade with a DSLR you probably need full frame and now the $$$ start to add up. The 6D is around $1500, but glass is more expensive, and it's still only 21MP.

DPP 4.x will allow you to export directly into CC PS without saving to an intermediate TIFF file which is both a saving in file space and steps in the workflow. What I don't know is whether it will export directly into CS3 - that would be interesting to know (the export to PS is in the DPP tools menu).

My CS3 will not handle RAW, but DPP exports JPG and CR2 files to CS3 as TIFF files.

Each photo is an entity unto itself and in some cases adding people to the foto adds depth and feelings and in other cases it distracts. In my estimation for what it is worth. In the first foto the people add nothing and in fact detract but in the second one the foto would be fine either way and in the third one the people give meaning to the foto. My take on the first foto of the Eiffel Tower is that it is not really a picture of the Eiffel Tower. The tower is there but it is not a foto of the tower.
Also in the last foto there are people there but they are not really there. That might seem a little abstract and it probably is. But they give something to the foto but do not over take the foto. If the people were larger and/or there were more of them they would overwhelm the foto. They would therefore become the subject. One the second foto they are not the subject because of their position in the foto. They are there but they become second nature so as to not detract from the foto.
Take for instance a foto of an alley, one person might add something to the foto but a whole bunch of people would overwhelm it.

My thoughts, too. Kind of relates to the earlier thread about subject. In the first, the people are not the subject, so they distract. In the second, I agree it could work either way, while in the third they add and do not distract. I've been taking one of the Great Courses on photography on DVD, which said everything in a photograph should be there for a reason, should be there because you want it there, not because you were too lazy to find another angle or wait for a better time. I also tend to try to get rid of people if they are not the subject of the photo, but now I'll go back through some of mine and see if this was the right thing to do.

I have an old version of Photoshop CS3. I got my new Canon EOS 80D and downloaded their free DPP software. Do I need to get the LR/PS cloud package for $9.99 per month? Hate that idea, as do many others here. What will that let me do that I can't do with what I have? Enthusiast, not pro, and have a long way to go to master both the new camera and the software I have. DPP let's me do batch processing of RAW files, levels, curves (have a lot to learn) color adjustment, etc. PS CS3 doesn't handle my RAW files, but can handle the JPGs that I get from DPP. What will LR/PS do that I can't do with what I have?

Thanks!

There are photography tours to some of these places also. Seriously considering this one: http://www.ahpw.org/workshops/2017/Bryce-Canyon-National-Park-Photography-Workshop-2017-10-12/

Good idea. Gotta love some of these signs.

The second sign is hard to see. but if you follow the walkway, you see a camper. Left of the camper is a car. Between the camper and the car, a little more than halfway up the mountain is a sign showing where sea level is.

with a prime lens you make sharper images and can shoot in much lower lighting

You said it, d3200. Those are the reasons for a prime. Another is wide aperture for less depth of field. So, do you have an issue with sharpness? Probably not unless you want to print big. Do you have a problem with low light? You can push ISO - but then do you have a problem with noise? If you don't have a problem, you don't need a prime. I just got back into it a month ago and have a 14-20 and 18-135 on my Canon EOS 80D. Time will tell if I need a prime.

I think this is a very interesting question. I take photographs to document my travels, but I also aspire to produce art. I often like to make photographs that capture something the eye doesn't usually see. Bokeh, for example. Or the opposite - a broad landscape with everything sharp - the eye can't take it all in at the same time but the camera can. Was Renoir a "bad" painter because he didn't capture a scene with the realism of a Hopper?

But, IMHO manipulation of an image can go too far and be gimmicky. Maybe it's okay if it doesn't look gimmicky. Or maybe it's okay even if it does look gimmicky. I really don't know. I think it was said that art is in the eye of the beholder. I kind of like this image, maybe even better than the original, because it's different. But it was too easy. Is it a photograph? Is it art? It certainly is different from what the eye usually sees.

I guess, in the end, it pleases you, that's all that matters unless you care if it pleases others, too.

I've been to the Furnace Creek Ranch twice, and recommend it. Restaurant is not fancy, but good. And if you want to get up to Dante's View around sunrise or sunset, the Ranch is pretty close.

I got the 80D refurbished direct from Canon with 18-135 lens for $1199 plus tax and shipping. I had considered the 70D or 760D, but since by the time I added more glass I'd be close to $2K anyway, I figured it would be worth the extra $300 or so.

All good advice. One thing I did when I got my new camera (Canon 80D - just over a week ago) was read the manual, just to learn what the camera could do. Having shot film SLRs and digital point and shoots in the past, I was amazed to find some of the things the camera could do. Just being aware of the potential was a good start. Now I'm going back and learning how to use some of these features.

BTW, if you can download a PDF of the manual to a laptop, do so. You can search on "flash" or "continuous" or "RAW" or "AF" or whatever, and quickly find what you need.
