I currently shoot a D500 (D7200 backup), mostly with an 18-300.
I have other lens, both DX ad FX. I have not seen any reason
to be looking at any upgrades at this time.

It's been almost 50 years since I've used a IIIc, but if I remember correctly,
there is a button on the bottom (I think near the film advance lever) that
will release the lock.

I like the Red River paptheer but had trouble with the profile on my

I bought the 18-300 several years back to replace the two kit lens that came
with my D7200 because I didn't want to replace lens in some of the humid
dusty, sandy (beach) conditions I am in most of the time.
It is currently my main lens on a D500 and is a good walk around, and general
photo lens. I have no problem with it, except for occasionally at wide angle.
this has been corrected in PP. I have used it for the street photography that
I do most, and for some shot range wildlife.
Long range wildlife I use a 200-500.

Don't know that I can help with this but here goes.
After processing I save as Tiff files. I print the TIFF
to a Canon PRI-100 using the Canon Easy Print Software.
I have used Canon, HP, Kodak, and several different
Red River papers with no color shift that I have had with
using the print command from different programs.

I have several lens that I use on my D500. The 18-300 spends the most time
on the camera, mostly for general use (street).
My next favorite is the 200-500.

I shoot Nikon, so I am noy familiar with the Sony line.
If you are going to buy just one lens, I would suggest a
zoom lens in the 18-300 mm range.

Depends on what you call totally manual.
