At one time it wasn't the middle of nowhere, maybe a way station on the way there.

Everything has a cost. We need copper so we need copper mines. We need food so the native vegetation has to go to be replaced by food crops or pasture.

The entire world/life thing is a constant series of trade offs. It just depends on the cost we are willing to pay.

For the past several years my wife and I have volunteered at our local animal shelter. We have been working in the kitty section. After a couple of times being there, I thought that they could use some photos of the kitties to post in order to get more adoptions. It has been really fun and I've learned a considerable amount and continue to experiment. Just recently they have allowed me to bring in some lights and backgrounds. I am not so sure it is worth it. I know that your keen eyes will be able to tell the difference. If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to listen.
