I have seen the ads for DxO3 and wondered about it. I was hoping to see a thread about it and here it is. However, for all my years of experience with computing, I do not understand the references to PL3 and PL2. Can someone please refresh my memory or enlighten me?

With respect to the spots, nothing is easier to fix than these in Lightroom. Use the healing brush I think it's called, the round tool to the right of the crop tool. Click on the tool, make the brush slightly larger than the spot you wish to remove, center the brush over the spot, and click once. Bingo.

In the Lightroom Print module the last collapsible section of the right control panel is the Print Job section. In this section one controls several important variables about how the printer will handle the current print job. One of those controls is Brightness, which I have found is helpful when using a matte paper. Does anyone know the intended range of effect of this control? In other words, does it likely affect only the mid tones or the entire image?

This little sweetheart is so adorable I can't even pay attention to the technical substance of this thread. With such a range of facial expressiveness, I see a performing arts career ahead for her. Hope she loves school.

TriX -

Thanks for your thoughtful reply in support of my comment. No, I don't think you should take it down, as it is quite common for us all not to know the origins or creator of things we want to share. I just felt moved to make this point for all of us to consider, in the spirit of Do Unto Others....

As a former cat person I loved the cartoon.

I think this is hilarious, but it raises the question for me of who created this. We can be mighty concerned as photographers when someone uses our photos without attribution or permission and I wonder if we should not be as concerned that we at least try to attribute the works of others when used here on the Hog. I am not taking the poster to task for not providing attribution in this case, because this is something I have thought of when enjoying previous posts as well. A work such as this one has required much more artistic talent than most of us possess and when possible I think we should consider giving credit where credit is due. What do others think?

I would think this depends on several factors. First, your relationship with this possible client. Second, the fact that you are an admitted novice at this, which you have shared with her. Third, the possibility that you should do this primarily for the experience and charge only enough to cover any costs, because of the second factor. Depending on how much I wanted the experience, I might charge nothing at all. Think of it as an opportunity to start building a portrait portfolio.

Beautiful, subtle blending of tones and colors. #3 is rapturous and as good a landscape as one could hope to find. Wonderful job.

Bless you JohnB for your inspirational lesson in pragmatic neighborly love and compassion. I too was in a similar situation with hi-rise neighbors many years ago. They were in their 80s then and he was becoming largely unable to care for himself, while she was about as robust as a cup of sand. I will always remember that she was someone I actively avoided because I frankly didn't like her, but then one day I watched her struggling in the grocery store and offered her a ride home. When I entered their apartment with the grocery bags I saw that the hands of the kitchen clock had both fallen off and we're lying on the kitchen floor. What a dramatic metaphor for what was going on. Had their time already run out or were they living in a seam of reality where time no longer held sway? This began several years of active involvement with this couple in which the unplanned tasks ran from vacuuming their place occasionally to picking up feces from the bathroom floor to dressing the old man so that the demanding Mrs. could drag him out to charity events, which he characterized by saying to me once in his scratchy old man's voice as "This is hell." Of course the first task I undertook was replacing the hands on the clock, which then revealed that the clock mechanism needed to be replaced. But there was some problem with that too, the details of which I don't remember, but which of itself became my own symbol of being trapped in time.

I didn't mean to tell this story when I started writing this, but sort of couldn't help it as this memory from 35 years ago began to surge within me.

What I intended to say was that giving generously of yourself to others can sometimes lead to dependencies we didn't anticipate. That's when it gets tough and the whole thing can seem like a pain in the keyster. Giving of yourself to others without much hope for reward or recognition of your efforts is an exercise in seeing that you have been given a gift already for your efforts, which is the opportunity to serve another person in a way that means everything to them and can enhance your own sense of purpose in your life.

There may come a time when you have reached your limit of helping, when you become burned out. It happened to me in this case. My solution was to spread the pain to social workers and other senior citizen support agencies. If and when you reach your limits, don't be too hard on yourself for having them, but maybe try to spread the burden as I did.
