An alternative user: I use a trackpad with my iMac computer instead of a mouse. I find my fingers are a lot less tiring than working a mouse. Then when it came to Lightroom and Photoshop I find it very, very easy to use for editing etc. Only from memory (years ago) my fingers are better on the trackpad than my Wacom plus stylus ever was with a computer. Just an alternative to consider.

I haven't made a photo book in years, but I'm about to put one together. Do you have any recommendations pro or con. I've used several companies in the past, mainly Adorama. This would be a hard cover book, maybe twenty-four pages.

Blurb.com
I have made 14 books over the years with Blurb. I use their software which is incredibly easy to use and their first step up glossy paper (but paperback covers) and I am very happy with the results and speedy service. Recommended.

Apple makes a trackpad for that. The old one I use cost $20 (no longer available) but the new replacement is glass like an iPad and I glanced at it and think it was priced about $120. I think this is like the old Wacoms I used.

Yes you can draw right on an iPad with a pen and some software that is quite inexpensive.

These two programs were about $10 each when purchased. They are not hard to learn, they do all kinds of drawing and painting and you can work in layers.

"ProCreate" does everything and the learning curve is very mild.
"ArtRage" I have only used for painting since it Oil Paint brushes are outstanding, but I think it does everything.

I have used them both on a standard 9.7 inch iPad and, my preference, is the 12" iPad.

Recommended.

Apple's system has a built in "Time Machine." Simple to set up, usually to an external drive, and a breeze to go back and pick up one or many files from an earlier date--any date.

The best part is it is all automatic and is just an incremental back up of just the changes to any file.

I have approximately 2600 old slides to digitize. Two questions I would appreciate help with:

1. I am in the Pacific NW: What experience, bad or good, with providers of this service have you had?

2. Since my intention is to look through the finished product, is there a dedicated slide scanner that is fast enough and not horribly expensive you would recommend I buy and do it myself?

3. Extra question: For long term storage not including my existing hard drives: thumb drive, or portable hard drive or what to put the jpegs on?

Thanks for any help on any question.

1) Go to the \Lightroom folder in your OS file explorer / finder.
2) If you allow LR to do its own catalog 'back-up' when exiting the software, first go into the \Lighroom\Backups subfolder and delete everything except the most recent date-stamp.
3) Return to the folder view that shows the Lightroom folder.
4) Copy the entire \Lightroom folder onto your target external drive.

Backups not as advertised. On a MAC I have a folder under Applications for both Lightroom Classic and Adobe Lightroom Classic and in each is Adobe Lightroom app.

I can't find the backups folder anywhere. Any suggestions?

I had the same quandary with an old 27 in. iMac with 24 gb of memory and tons of software including LightRoom and 15,000 photos. The decision, after discussions with Apple, was go with the new M1 chip and 24 in. Apple thought the standard 8 gb memory would do it but I went with 16 gb. (I keep a Lot of windows/programs open) I am happy with the change.

The result is a faster machine, particularly noticeable when you render very old photos in Lightroom you haven't opened in years. It is just faster. Once in a while I miss by larger screen, but then I can just drop the side panels from Lightroom. I don't have the physical room, but if screen size really matters get a second 30 in screen and do it right. There are several good 30 inch monitors as well as Apple has one.

With my last Epson printer, came a program called Epson Photo+. I long ignored it as too simple. But as long as you export corrected photos from Lightroom and set up your printer with the settings for the Epson qualities and papers you are using it is a basic layout program that works quite well. Ignoring their templates, you open a blank sheet and can place, size and orient your photos anywhere you like. Then you can place text boxes of any size and orient them too. The only limitation is a separate text box is required for each type style.

Not much documentation, but it is pretty easy to figure out.

[quote=CHG_CANON]You should consult the Adobe documentation directly to confirm. My general understanding is:

1. Your LR catalog remains available for Library mode access and review of all images as well as ongoing Export module access of the current edit status of all your images.

2. The Develop model is disabled for any editing of images.

3. No new import processing into the LR library after you've suspended (cancelled) your Adobe subscription.

The points above disagree on several points within your original post. The exact details should be reviewed with Adobe or online 'experts' in the Adobe software.

I assumed what you wrote and what The Lightroom Queen also said before I went to Adobe. However, what prompted my post was the half hour I spent on the chat line (I wanted it documented) with Adobe Tech Support to try and confirm it, and he emphatically said this info was wrong. When the program payments stop, all the functionality of the program stopped.

All the responses I got, with lots of good advice I appreciate, seems to say the Adobe Tech did not know what he was chatting about. I think I will go with the UHH testimonials, and just assume he didn't know what he was talking about--and continue making my printed books! (I have 13 now, with about 300 photos in each over about 100 pages with all photos and descriptors of what you see.)

Again, thanks to all the good advice.
