I quite often see this when watching videos on Youtube, what causes this vertical view, is it because it was taken on a phone being held vertical rather then sideways...?

The phone was held vertically (portrait) when shot.
I hate, with a passion, when viewers (display applications) ADD the fuzzy MOVING image to the left and right to fill the landscape viewing screen.
They should leave it black.
(Better to shoot horizontal in most instances.)
