Like it very much. Good idea about the noise. It has an old and a gritty feel to it.

Back in the film days I loved shooting wiyh TRI-X and Ilford HP5. I used to push process it 1-2 stops to bring out even more grain. I continued to use it even when they came out with fast fine grain like Kodak T-Max and Ilford Delta

I met my son in NYC to work on an assignment for his digital photo class. These are some of the ones I took. Unfortunately the rain was pouring down so we had to abandon our plans to shoot Times Square and Central Park and instead stayed close to the train station and inside the NY Public Library.
The lighting was poor so I converted most of the pictures to B&W

Grand Central station in NYC is one of my favorite places to shoot. The architecture and details lends itself to B&W. I shot this at ISO 12,800 and deliberately left the noise in to give the photo the feel of old fashioned TRI-X film

Taking a laptop or tablet gives you the ability to edit your photos as you take them

adorama has about 15 pages worth of portable hard drives from various manufacturers and prices. The ones from Lacie are particularly rugged but a bit pricey

Fall is my favorite time to be at the beach. The crowds are gone, the air is cool and crisp and the harsh summer sun has given way to soft autumn light. These were taken this October at the Rhode Island Shoreline

The D5300 has one slot for SD cards. The reasons for jpegs are to preview or see what I’ve gotten and for potentially posting to social media, although that isn’t a priority.

Maybe it would help to know what prompted this question: We spent three weeks in Ireland in September and I shot some 3,000 frames, all largest jpeg. The largest SD cards I have are 32 GB. Had I shot raw+jpeg, would I have had enough SD room for the trip, given I had no way to off load to another device (that’s a different issue, of course).

This is important to me because we’re planning some other great trips and I’d like to handle my photography differently.

If your issue is capacity buy more and higher capacity cards Memory is cheap. At Adorama (and everywhere else) Sandisk UHC SD cards are priced as follows

64GB - $20
128GB - $40
256GB extreme- $110

The risk with large capacity cards is if one becomes corrupted or lost you lose that many more pictures.

Portable hard drives are incredibly cheap as well. A WD 1TB Drive is $62 and weighs 0.3 lbs . 2 TB is $90 and weighs 0.5 Lbs. Both are smaller than an Iphone. Metal or otherwise rugged models are a little more

You can always use the selective adjustment brush or gradient filter in LR to bring down the exposure in the sky and add some clarity and contrast to make it more dramatic. Assuming the picture was shot in RAW

I would brighten it up a bit especially in the midtones. Aalso add a bit of sharpness to accentuate his fur

Being a City/Suburban boy I rarely get to photograph majestic birds like Ospreys, Eagles and hawks so I make do with whats available; Pigeons in town and seagulls by the shore

The problem I had with both the 80-200 non VR and 70-200 VR is that they are both too damn heavy to lug around all day long. I found myself using the much lighter 70-300 F4.5-5.6 far more often even though the IQ was not in the same league in terms of resolution, sharpness and distortion . As soon as the F4 version came out I traded in my 2.8 lens for it. The image quality is great and because of the light weight (30 gm vs 50 gms) it's much easier to hand hold and VR keeps it sharp down to 1/20th second at 200mm. It may not be 100 percent weather sealed but because it zooms internally it's not like it pulls in dust and moisture like a telescoping zoom does. As far as speed goes it's only a one stop difference and today's cameras are noise free at higher ISOs

If you really need F 2.8 and don't want to spend Nikon money look at the Tamron which has VR, is moisture resistant and can be had for $1500
