I was standing on a wooden deck at the beginning of a rain shower. After moving away from my original position, I saw this:

What do ya' think?

I have the original Tamron SP 70-200 2.8 VC... That retailed for around $1500 six or seven years ago. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being equivalent to the Canon EF 70-200 2.8L II, the Tamron comes in at around 9.5 and that's mainly because the Canon's AF is a bit faster. It's a really nice lens and it's slightly smaller and lighter than the Canon lens.

Thanks, I like the 4 stop VC ability of that lens. Let me ask, have you been able to get sharp images at low shutter speeds?

Not sure what your third lens is but I have the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2. I usually shoot baseball and football at f/2.8. The AF is fast and right on at any zoom setting. I check focus often by enlarging the view to 100%. It is tack sharp. I could not be more happy with this lens.

I know its more money but the G2 is well worth it.

Thanks Kozan. It is the G2 that I refer to as the third lens. I like the idea of buying the most recent version of any lens however, I can get the VC, or second version of the lens for for nearly $350 Less than the G2.

Your glowing review of that lens though, helps me to feel good about getting any Tamron lens, though.

Thanks!

I am thinking about getting a Tamron 70-200 f2.8. There are 3 versions out there, The first, does not have Vibration Control (VC), bit is said to have great IQ. The second version does have VC and also has Great IQand the 3rd one ia out of my price range. Does any one out there have actual hands on experience with either of the 2 lenses? If so what do you think?

If they birds are generally in one place, like at a feeder, you could try moving the flash closer using a remote flash trigger. Otherwise, you loose a lot of power with the flash and you won’t be able to use the higher shutter setting you need to reduce the ambient light.

Indeed I have put the flash within 3 feet of the feeder. Even still, I do not get enough light during the Golden Hour.

I have been trying to get a decent image of a humming bird in my backyard-with little luck. After some trial and error, more error than trial, I figured that the minimum shutter speed is no less than 1/800, faster if possible. The light in the yard is dappled, some times nice and bright, while other times too dark for even 1600 ISO. Ha!, you say, use a flash! Well, we all know the draw backs with that--shutter speed. So, I went and got a Yungnuo 685 and attending trigger.

It arrived today! All of my problems are gone!

Not so much.

While I can shoot up to 1/8000 of a second, the ambient light is still lacking. In other words, I think the HSS enhances the ambient light but does not give off enough overall luminesce to make of for a general lack of light.

I have a couple of ideas to get over this problem, but want to see what you Hoggers may come up with.

thx!!!

I took an old film photo and mounted it on an easel then photographed it. After using PS, I was able to make the image as big as I wanted with no distortion or grain. So, I suggest that you print the image to what ever size you feel is best, at your printers' highest resolution, on matte paper. Take a picture of the printed image in RAW and work with that file. A lot of steps, but if it works...

IMHO, I see these contests as a way to promote new and "better" Software. I see it as a marketing gimmick so the insecure photographer, will buy the software. Yes I PP all on my images(we really don't have a choice) and sometimes use it to accentuate a particular part of an image, for the most part though, I think a good photograph needs very little editing.

Unfortunately, I have produced very few "good" photos. :-()

OK, here is my last attempt. I could spend more time working on the grain, but Hurricane Joe is not sharp enough for my taste.

Every one has my consent to see what they can do with the image, though. BTW, I printed the image on my Pro-100 and it came out pretty well, but still the subject is not sharp enough for my likin'

Hey thanks for the advice from y'all. jcryan, I used the BW switch in Adobe RAW, then I tried using Dfine 2, but that did not work due to the image being converted already.

I think I'll Wrk the RAW image, then convert in Photoshop. I'll post the results.

Thanks all, olc

Here are is one image The original and a B&W Conversion. The B&W is OK but a little heavy on grain. Does any one out there have any suggestions on how to reduce the grain?

OK! Large Prints! What do you plan to do with them after you print ... put them in a large box? or Exhibit on a large wall? or Plan to sell them?

The typical home has limited photo exhibit space and large prints will eat up that space quickly. Perhaps 4' and above and perhaps 12' wide. Realistically, 8x10 prints can provide an exhibit of many of your photos. If you only with to exhibit a few, then go to your local Ace Hardware and have you large prints done at a lower cost than maintaining and feeding ink to your own large printer.

If you are a somewhat typical UHH person then you may have the my printer is bigger than your addiction. Yes, I have a printer to print large prints... as Chefneil commented the Pro 100....still in the box. I used Epson for years... age and neglect eventually plugged it. The Canon TS9020 was replaced by the update [?] 9120 so the 9020 went on sale for $50. The 9020 does beautiful prints and 3party ink sets are very low cost. Christmas is only a little over 6 months away... so start printing....

Sincerely, I am really interested in what people do with 100 ++ large prints...
OK! Large Prints! What do you plan to do with them... (show quote)

Sir, it looks like you may think that my Canon printer is still in the box. On the contrary, I use it a lot. My point was that I had to do little modifications in order to produce really good prints.

I spent another minute in the studio and got these shots of the cracks. I also took another shot of my whole studio and light setup.

When I look at the lens with nothing but my eyes I can see some rainbows but I could not get them with this setup. Any suggestions---Anyone?

At first I thought this guy was a Chickadee of some sort, but after observing its behavior, mostly pecking at the branches of the big oak, I wonder if it may be a woodpecker of some sort.

Any wisdom out there?
