I am not sure where to to post this, so here we go(I am sure Admin will put this post in the right place). I just got ahold of this new(to me) lens.It is for my film camera. The lens is a Canon FD 85-300. Good grief it is SOOO heavy! If you look closely, you may see an anomaly in the front element(Which is replaceable). I hope the images will not be badly effected. But for the price, I got a deal. Looking at the images, I'm thinking I should spend a minute or two cleaning the elements.

Congratulations, that is quite a beast. Are you going to use it or is it just for the collection?

It is a working lens. I have taken a few pictures with it. However, the front element has an anomaly and I am not sure how it will effect IQ( do you use that term for film?). I am going to do a little research on the lens and see if repairing it would be worth the effort.

Ebay has several of theses lenses for around $200 Plus or minus and I paid less than $50.

I have been doing a little film photog and this lens will round out the kit. Other than that, It will be added to my collection.

How about cleaning (wet) before spending brain power speculating. Most of such debris when on my lenses has vanished after cleaning. Offhand I think what may remain will not make a noticeable difference.

Indeed the lens and glass need to be wiped and generally cleaned. However, inside the front element is some kind of fracture. The salesman who sold me the lens was very clear when he sold it to me. An interesting fact about this lens is that the focusing element of the lens is easily removed and by theory replaced. Now all I need to do is figure out where to get the component. I'll get a close up of the fracture a little later today.

Congratulations on your new acquisition. Usually, small defects in the front element will not affect the image as much as defects on the rear element.

Thanks Bob. I shot a few backyard fotos and took the film to my local shop(the place a bought the lens from) to get an idea of what I can get from the lens and Canon TX combo.

I'll post them when I get them.

I spent another minute in the studio and got these shots of the cracks. I also took another shot of my whole studio and light setup.

When I look at the lens with nothing but my eyes I can see some rainbows but I could not get them with this setup. Any suggestions---Anyone?

"Rainbows".

Well .. That is a creative word for "Mold" between the elements of the objective compound lens.

Seriously...

I do not believe there is a way to clean this out -- I have a little mold in a lens (circa - 1870) however - it does not seem to make a difference, but it is only a small amount, and the camera is a 8X10. - Nothing like what you have. One thing to do is see the results and figure a way to just deal with it.

Good luck.

I use to be a camera repair tech.that front element is 2 lenses glued together with a clear glue that is activated by infrared light i.e. sunlight.the glue is available, but not too easy to find.It is possible to separate the elements ,but no guarantees that you won't break one of the elements.I was moderately successful.(young and brave at the time)Ended up sending them back to canon for repair. You can't just find another similar lens and do a swap.when lenses are assembled, they are calibrated.putting another replaceable lens on will look good, but the resulting images will likely suffer.

I thought that might be the case as well with this... I went with the mold thing as I have seen this on the old lens I use in my DIY 8X10 camera. I have better and newer lenses, however, I like using that old brass lens.

Re-looking at the problem at full view, I do see what you are meaning about that adhesive separating from the glass. This is a difficult repair to make, indeed.

Good information.

Thank you.

((I always like to read about the repair and sometimes technical side of photography.))
