Someone online was driving a relative's car, and the battery went completely dead. He couldn't close the windows or lock the car, so he had to stay with it. He called AAA, and the guy said the battery was beyond help, so he bought a new one. I had never thought about a dead battery preventing the windows to close or the doors to lock.

I carry one of those little ni-cad battery jumpers in my car.

I swap out auto batteries on the 4th year whether they load test ok or not as a JIC. Same should be done for whole house generators, where 90% of the no starts are due to bad batteries.

Hi friends, I have Nikons d7200 and d500 and my favorite walk around lens is the Nikkor 18-200mm. Recently it began slipping. I now use a band on it, but I just don't feel the photos are as sharp arls they once were. I know with a long zoom sharpness is often compromised, and I have several other lenses that do an excellent job. But as an almost 72 yr old woman, although spry enough, sometimes I just want to grab one lens for a long hike. I'm looking between Nikkor, Tamron, and Sigma. I want new, as I don't want to deal with slipping again any time soon. I'm looking at 18mm-300mm, or even 400mm is quality isn't terribly compromised. And suggestions from personal experience? Thank you!!

Can’t give any input on that lens. I do use an 18-140 Nikon lens on a dx camera and find it a very useful walk-around lens with good results. Just my thoughts.

I would agree......my walk around on my D7200.

I heard that a tattoo convention was coming to town and I immediately started thinking about a ring flash.
Looking online, I found that the prices have jumped up a bit, like everything else.
I saw that Godox has a nice one and it looks like Wescott had the identical ring flash for several dollars less(-150.00). Looked like the same flash to me....
What is the best, for the money, ring flash?
Anyone have a preference or comments?

You might also like to try this, it works great for Macro handheld with an on-camera flash.

I know this isn't a controversial topic, but I want to give a plug to shooting raw, anyway. I came across some shots from 2016, using a Sony a6000. All the images are arw - Sony raw. I often wondered if the guy who decided on that "arw" extension just mixed up the letters, intending to write "raw."

The pictures were shot in a high contrast situation - dark inside but bright outside. Using Luminar, I was able to process the twenty-five I wanted. The example of before and after below is probably the worst of the bunch, but it turned out being usable.

One thing about looking at pictures of a senior picnic from seven years ago - not all of the people in the pictures are still with us.

That's why I like an in-camera pop-up TTL flash for sudden composition issues like this.

I have a Canon 5D-II, the built-in light meter that you see in the view finder is so dim that it is hard to read. In a bright environment it is unreadable. Is there a way to brighten this display?

Given how good the Iphone camera has become are any of the major companies like Nikon or Sony thinking of producing their own model ?
It would probably be better and it might get back customers, like me, who put their DSLRs in the drawer.

Did you ever notice how even a bad true camera photo viewed on a iPhone or equivalent looks pretty decent? Smaller images are very forgiving.

My daughter, son-in-law (and grandchild) are taking my wife and me to Disney World, next month. I'm going largely to please my wife and kids but it's been 30 years since I took my kids there and a whole lot has changed since then. Gone are the days of walking up to the ticket booth and buying a ticket; everything's electronic and reserved ahead of time. Luckily, my kids have taken care of lodging, park tickets, rides and restaurants.

My question is what camera to take, if any? I have a Nikon D5600 (heavy & bulky), a Sony HX400V (lightweight and a little bulky) and, of course, an iPhone (no weight & no bulk). I'm not looking at this as a photography adventure and my wife can just as easily take snapshots to document our vacation as I can.

So I'm asking anyone who's been there: Is having a camera slung across your shoulder worth it? Or is a camera problematic when going on rides, walking around the various theme parks, etc.?

https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0TGdFryYGVvVOS. Mac Photo Sharing Album wait for images to come into focus. Shot with my D7100 & 18-140MM, on-camera flash when needed, Raw & jpeg. I processed the raws on the tougher low light exposures. I would suggest bringing both--D5600 & iPhone.....test & try. The Disney PhotoPass is fun too, they create some fun images. I videoed the rides with the D7100, plenty to hold on too vs an iPhone which could be dropped.

Almost all my photography has always been travel photography. As I am getting older the long trips are over. I am thinking about macro photography. I bought a Canon RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM lens. From best I can tell I get a 1 to 1 image using this lens and a Canon R7 camera. What is the best ways to get closer to the subject. Are extenders or extension tubes effective or available or is it best to just crop in Lightroom? I know very little about this topic. Thanks for your input. Steve

My Grand son (16yo) is visiting me for the holiday weekend. I got him into photography a few years ago by passing down my Canon 50D and a few lenses. He has has taken off like a rocket and is now even the official photographer for his high school. He is currently using a new(ish) but slow windows laptop to edit using his subscription to Light Room Classic and Photoshop. Last night I found a 2013 MacBook Pro that used to be mine several years ago and I cleaned it up and he tried to install his Lightroom Classic but was informed that the operating system -SIERA- was inadequate ( not surprising). Is there anything that we can do short of trashing this computer?

Smart phones are nipping at dslrs and mirrorless cameras continuity. Smart phones have the advantage of being pocketable, convenient, it can share photos easier and are able to take fairly decent photos. I have my phone with me all the time so I have a camera with me all the time. I have one that's a couple of years old Samsung S10. Sometimes I have my 850 but it is not pocketable or convenient but it takes better pictures than my smart phone.
A long time ago my grand daughter wanted a camera. She was ten or eleven. I bought her a smart phone. She was really excited. A couple of years later she wanted a real camera. I bought her a Nikon d3100 and some books. Then I had the fun of teaching her a little about photography. Whenever I saw her she had her camera with her in a carrier that she had made. She was about fifteen or so. More years went by. Every once in a while a would see a photo of hers in a the Dallas Magazine and Cowboys and Indians. She has graduated from college, owns an art studio in Dallas and doing very well. The other day she showed me her new camera, a Z9 and started telling me what it can do with the same excitement she had with that 3100, big smiles and jumping around on her toes. She still uses the same smart phone I bought her ten years ago. She says, "It's a phone grandpa not a real camera." She has found the excitement of photography.

This old dog is trying to learn some new tricks. It's cold here in the Lost River Valley of Central Idaho...so... my wife dumped boxes and boxes of old slides and negatives in my lap and told me to do something with them. I'm talking a few thousand images taken from 1970-1990. There are 35mm slides, 35mm negatives, 120 transparencies and negs, 645 slides and negs, and a few 4x5 transparencies and negs. I guess you know what the question is. How can I convert these to digital? Can I scan them? Do today's scanners produce good enough resolution to print, say 20x24 inch prints? I have copied quite a few of the 35mm slides using a macro lens and slide copier. It's mostly the larger transparencies and negatives that I don't know how to deal with. I need advice.

Fotobridge & others......

I think it is best to let someone who does it full time do the work.

Instead, go for some hikes, maybe a trip with the time and angst you have avoided.

Seems crazy to purchase equipment for a one time project.
